The Ratio of Alpha to Beta Activity of Natural Atmospheric Radioactivity (open access)

The Ratio of Alpha to Beta Activity of Natural Atmospheric Radioactivity

Abstract: The alpha to beta ratio of naturally occurring radioactivity in the air has been investigated. The study has concerned itself primarily with radon daughter products collected on filter-paper samples from the time equilibrium has been established on the paper through elapsed times during which radioactive counting is normally accomplished. Calculations showing the change in this ratio of activities during the above period are presented. From this work it appears that the observed constancy of ratio does have theoretical justification and that departures in alpha-to-beta ratio would be a usable approach to the detection of long-lived alpha or beta radioisotopes in the atmosphere.

Comparison of Experimental and Theoretical Zero-Lift Wave-Drag Results for Various Wing-Body-Tail Combinations at Mach Numbers Up to 1.9

"Comparisons are made of experimental and theoretical zero-lift wave drag for several nose shapes, wing-body combinations, and models of current airplanes at Mach numbers up to 1.0. The experimental data were obtained from tests in the Ames 6- by 6-foot supersonic wind tunnel and at the NACA Wallops Island facility. The theoretical drag was found by use of linear theory utilizing model area distributions" (p. 1).

Preliminary investigation of plate-type molybdenum disilicide fuel elements for an air-cycle nuclear reactor (open access)

Preliminary investigation of plate-type molybdenum disilicide fuel elements for an air-cycle nuclear reactor

From Summary: "Flat, plate-type elements, 3.5 by 0.5 by 0.070 inches in size and containing 10 percent elemental natural uranium, were produced by hot pressing. The elements were acid-treated to remove surface uranium and then coated with an alumina glaze. Such an element remained stable and did not lose detectable quantities of fission fragments in a 400-hour treatment at 1800 degrees F in a flux of 5 X 10 to the 11th power neutrons per square centimeter per second. Such elements are conveniently produced and, dependent on design and on the successful resolution of problems such as thermal shock, offer a possible method of increasing air-cycle element temperatures and related performance."

Canning depleted uranium : production test 313-110-M, final report

From summary: "Uranium billets deficient in U235 were subjected to the normal successive steps in the slug fabrication process; viz., rolling, machining, and canning. No unusual behavior was observed at any point in the process, thus indicating that the depleted metal from the standpoint of mechanical properties can be considered equivalent to normal uranium."

Thorium-Molybdenum Phase Diagram

From abstract: "The phase diagram of the thorium-molybdenum alloy system has been determined to be the eutectic type with a eutectoid reaction associated with the thorium alpha-beta transformation. X-ray, thermal, electrical resistance and metallographic methods have established the eutectic point at 1380 ± 10°C and 7.0 ± 0.5 wt % molybdenum. A eutectoid reaction is proposed at 1358 ± 5°C and less than 0.1 wt % molybdenum. No solubility of thorium in molybdenum was detected at 1325°C."
