Fundamental characterization of alternate fuel effects in continuous combustion systems. Summary technical progress report, August 15, 1978-January 31, 1980
The overall objective of this contract is to assist in the development of fuel-flexible combustion systems for gas turbines as well as Rankine and Stirling cycle engines. The primary emphasis of the program is on liquid hydrocarbons produced from non-petroleum resources. Fuel-flexible combustion systems will provide for more rapid transition of these alternative fuels into important future energy utilization centers (especially utility power generation with the combined cycle gas turbine). The specific technical objectives of the program are: (a) develop an improved understanding of relationships between alternative fuel properties and continuous combustion system effects, and (b) provide analytical modeling/correlation capabilities to be used as design aids for development of fuel-tolerant combustion systems. This is the second major report of the program. Key experimental findings during this reporting period concern stirred combustor soot production during operation at controlled temperature conditions, soot production as a function of combustor residence time, an improved measurement technique for total hydrocarbons and initial stirred combustor results of fuel nitrogen conversion. While the results to be presented concern a stirred combustor which utilizes premixed fuel vapor/oxidant mixtures, a new combustor which combusts liquid fuel injected into the reactor as a spray has been developed and will be …

Interim findings of programmatic options for a building design competition for energy conservation
The purpose of this report is to present various programmatic options for the Buildings and Community Systems (BCS) to use in utilizing a building design competition as a mechanism to promote the widescale adoption of energy conservation in new buildings design. The general program requirements were that: (1) the design competition focus on the multi-family low-rise residential market; (2) the design competition would result in the construction of a building or buildings under a Federally-assisted housing program; (3) the competition would be among competitors who are professional architects, designers, and/or developers; (4) the design competition would generate a high degree of public and professional awareness of conservation options in building design; and (5) the competition would be based on the use of a common standard of judgement (e.g., Btu's per square foot). The purpose of the initial phase of this study has been: (1) to assess the feasibility of developing a design competition that can meet the general requirements; (2) to identify potential program options for the competition; and (3) to develop a preliminary structural framework for it. This paper reports the study approach and the preliminary findings. (MCW)

Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons From Nitrogen and Oxygen
The differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 14-Mev neutrons from nitrogen and oxygen were measured in the angular range from 17 to 140 deg , using liquid targets and annular ring geometry. Inelastic scattering to the 2.31 and 3.95-Mev levels in N/sup 14/ and to the levels near 6 and 7 Mev in O/sup 16/ was investigated over a more restricted angular range. The 2.31-Mev level in N/sup 14/ was not excited appreciably, in disagreement with previously reported results. For both elements, the elastic scattering cross sections (determined to an accuracy of 10%) were found to be appreciably higher than the optical model predictions by Rjorklund and Fernbach for scatterirg angles larger than 70 deg . The inelastic cross sections measured are, within experimental accuracy, the same as the corresponding (p,p') cross sections. (auth)

BOUNDARY CONDITIONS AND CONSERVATION PROPERTIES OF FOPP, A PLASMA FOKKER- PLANCK CODE
The energy distribution of ions and electrons in DCX are being studied by means of the Fokker-Planck approximation to the Boltzmann equation. An IBM- 704 code, called FOPP, was constructed to solve simultaneously the coupled Fokker-Planck equations for each of the two species of particles. This report discusses the difference scheme employed and derives the boundary conditions necessary in order that this difference scheme conserve energy and particles in the absence of sources and sinks. In particular, detailed discussion is given of problems arising from the use of two grid sizes, which proved advantageous on account of the great difference in the mass of ions and electrons. (auth)

Rocky Flats model 2030-1 container (AEC--AL USA/5332/BLF) safety analysis report for packaging (SARP)
Division, Dow Chemical U.S.A., for shipping unirradiated fissile material in solid form. Components consist of a 30-gal steel drum, Celotex insulation, and stainless steel containment vessel(s) of 10-in. dia. A simple venting system prevents rtupture of the outer drum in the event of accidental fire. Approved material limits include 5 kg of plutonium or 11 kg of enriched uranium. Thermal decay energy is normally limited to 20 W. Results of extensive tests show the container will function effectively when exposed to all environment and accident conditions as required. The containment vessel temperature rise will not exceed 140 deg F during the thermal test. Internal heating of 20 W will cause an additional temperature rise of 80 deg F. (auth)

Measurement of D->A Momentum Aperture and Test of D->A Field Qualities
The data presented here were taken during two shifts dedicated to D->A studies. The goal during both of these study periods was a test of the field quality of the D->A channel devices, but for the first study period on 10/21/91 the TBT system was not operational so we simply measured the transfer efficiency as a function of momentum. The conclusion from these measurements is as follows: (1) The momentum aperture of the D->A channel is smaller than expected. (2) The restriction is in physical space is somewhere near A:IKIK. (3) The field quality of the injection channel devices is adequate.

Beneficiation of Monument Number 2 Ore Apache County, Arizona
From introduction: The Monument No. 2 mine is in the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Arizona, about 20 miles southwest from the San Juan River at Mexican Hat, Utah, and 26 miles southwest from Mexican Water, Arizona. The property has been operated, since its discovery, by Vanadium Corporation of America, which holds a 10-year mining lease, granted through the Interior Department, to 43 acres of ground. History of the discovery of the deposit is vague, but reportedly it was first seen around 1942 by a Navajo who mentioned the occurrence to Harry Goulding, Indian trader, who in turn advised D. W. Viles of Vanadium Corporation of America. Minor portions of the deposit are held by Cato Sells and Harvey Black, Navajos, under mining permits issued by the Navajo Tribal Council. The Sells acreage is being operated by Climax Uranium Corporation.
