Factors in the design of centrifugal type injection valves for oil engines (open access)

Factors in the design of centrifugal type injection valves for oil engines

This research was undertaken in connection with a general study of the application of the fuel injection engine to aircraft. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the effect of four important factors in the design of a centrifugal type automatic injection valve on the penetration, general shape, and distribution of oil sprays. The general method employed was to record the development of single sprays by means of special high-speed photographic apparatus capable of taking 25 consecutive pictures of the moving spray at a rate of 4,000 per second. Investigations were made concerning the effects on spray characteristics, of the helix angle of helical grooves, the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the orifice to that of the grooves, the ratio of orifice length to diameter, and the position of the seat. Maximum spray penetration was obtained with a ratio of orifice length to diameter of about 1.5. Slightly greater penetration was obtained with the seat directly before the orifice.

Airship Model Tests in the Variable Density Wind Tunnel (open access)

Airship Model Tests in the Variable Density Wind Tunnel

This report presents the results of wind tunnel tests conducted to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of airship models. Eight Goodyear-Zeppelin airship models were tested in the original closed-throat tunnel. After the tunnel was rebuilt with an open throat a new model was tested, and one of the Goodyear-Zeppelin models was retested. The results indicate that much may be done to determine the drag of airships from evaluations of the pressure and skin-frictional drags on models tested at large Reynolds number.

Investigations of Tumbling Characteristics of a 1/20-Scale Model of the Northrop N-9M Airplane (open access)

Investigations of Tumbling Characteristics of a 1/20-Scale Model of the Northrop N-9M Airplane

From Summary: "The tumbling characteristics of a 1/20-scale model of the Northrop N-9M airplane have been determined in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel for various configurations and loading conditions of the model. The investigation included tests to determine whether recovery from a tumble could be effected by the use of parachutes. An estimation of the forces due to acceleration acting on the pilot during a tumble was made. The tests were performed at an equivalent test altitude of 15,000 feet."

Measurements of the Lateral and Directional Stability and Control Characteristics of a P-51H Airplane (AAF No. 44-64164) (open access)

Measurements of the Lateral and Directional Stability and Control Characteristics of a P-51H Airplane (AAF No. 44-64164)

From Summary: "Flight tests of a P-51H airplane with two different vertical-tail assemblies were made to determine lateral and directional stability and control characteristics. The airplane had satisfactory directional stability in the landing, approach, and wave-off conditions with either tail. In the power-on clean and glide conditions, however, the airplane had weak directional stability with the original tail. The production tail, which had a 7-inch fin extension and a shorter span rudder, improved the directional stability in the power-on clean and glide conditions, but the stability was still weak in the power-on clean condition."

Experimental Pressure Distributions Over Wing Tips at Mach Number 1.9 1 - Wing Tip With Subsonic Leading Edge (open access)

Experimental Pressure Distributions Over Wing Tips at Mach Number 1.9 1 - Wing Tip With Subsonic Leading Edge

An investigation was conducted at a Mach number of 1.91 to determine spanwise pressure distribution over a wing tip in a region influenced by a sharp subsonic leading edge swept back at 70 degrees. Except for pressure distribution on the top surface in the immediate vicinity of the subsonic leading edge, the maximum difference between linearized theory and experimental data was 2 1/2 percent (of free-stream dynamic pressure) for angles of attack up to 4 degrees and 7 percent for angles of attack up to 8 degrees. Pressures on the top surface nearest the subsonic edge indicated local expansions beyond values predicted by linearized theory.

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium (open access)

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium

The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.

Collection and analysis of active particles (open access)

Collection and analysis of active particles

When it became apparent that particles were emanating from the stacks of the separations plants, it become important that the source, size, activity and composition of the particles be determined in order to evaluate the hazard to persons working in and neer the stack areas. The present report will give the results of radiochemical analysis of particles collected by electrostatic precipitation from ``B`` plant canyon ventilation air, not from the off-gas ventilation line. Of importance is the fact the particles analyzed consist not only of particles from the ventilation air but also, unavoidably, of rust from the iron manifold used to conduct the gases to the precipitator. This makes a determination of the activity versus weight ratio impossible, but should not invalidate the radiochemical data.

The Separation of Trace Amounts of Radioactive Cs From Macro Quanitites of Sodium and Potassium Salts (open access)

The Separation of Trace Amounts of Radioactive Cs From Macro Quanitites of Sodium and Potassium Salts

Summary: A method for the separation of cesium from macro quantities of sodium and potassium using an ion exchange resin, Dowex 50, has been developed. A 95% recovery of cesium with a reduction of the solid content of 95% was found possible. Curves illustrating the effect of acidity, column length, and flow rate are presented in the report. The sodium form, hydrogen form and ammonium form of Dowex 50 were investigated; the hydrogen form was found to give the best separation.

The Separation of Trace Amounts of Radioactive Cs From Macro Quantities of Sodium and Potassium Salts (open access)

The Separation of Trace Amounts of Radioactive Cs From Macro Quantities of Sodium and Potassium Salts

Recent attempts to separate fission products from urine salts in a form suitable for measurement by beta counting have involved the use of ion exchange resins to remove the ions present in macro quantities leaving the trace elements behind as a {open_quotes}thin{close_quotes} sample for counting techniques. The separation of Cs from Na and K was chosen as the starting point because of the relative difficulty of separating these elements with ordinary chemical techniques. This report describes the testing of a method for the separation of cesium from macro quantities of sodium and potassium using the ion exchange resin Dowex 50. The results obtained on the preliminary work with solutions containing only the elements in question were deemed of sufficient interest to warrant reporting separately. Other difficulties from interfering ions in urine are now being studied.

Hot semiworks Redox studies (open access)

Hot semiworks Redox studies

The separations Hot Semiworks at the Hanford Atomic Products Operation was built in order to: (1) develop optimum conditions for the economic operation of the Redox and TBP plants, (2) procure engineering design data which would allow the specification of process equipment required for new processes such as Purex, (3) provide facilities for the study of future process and engineering problems on a semiworks scale employing radioactive process solutions, and (4) provide facilities for immediate trouble shooting for urgent separations plant problems. The initial operation of this facility was designed to develop conditions for the economic operation of the Redox Plant. These studies, covering a period from November, 1952 to October, 1953, are described in this report. The Redox process is used at Hanford for the separation of uranium and plutonium from fission products and from each other. The basis of the process is the preferential extraction of uranium and plutonium nitrates from an aqueous phase of high salting strength into an organic solvent (methyl isobutyl ketone) to effect the separation from fission products. This operation is conducted continuously in columns, packed with Raschig rings, through which the phases are passed counter-currently. Uranium and plutonium are separated by converting the …
