Airship Model Tests in the Variable Density Wind Tunnel (open access)

Airship Model Tests in the Variable Density Wind Tunnel

This report presents the results of wind tunnel tests conducted to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of airship models. Eight Goodyear-Zeppelin airship models were tested in the original closed-throat tunnel. After the tunnel was rebuilt with an open throat a new model was tested, and one of the Goodyear-Zeppelin models was retested. The results indicate that much may be done to determine the drag of airships from evaluations of the pressure and skin-frictional drags on models tested at large Reynolds number.

Laboratory Evaporation Testing Of Hanford Waste Treatment Plant Low Activity Waste Off-Gas Condensate Simulant (open access)

Laboratory Evaporation Testing Of Hanford Waste Treatment Plant Low Activity Waste Off-Gas Condensate Simulant

The Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) Low Activity Waste (LAW) vitrification facility will generate an aqueous condensate recycle stream, LAW Off-Gas Condensate, from the off-gas system. The baseline plan for disposition of this stream is to send it to the WTP Pretreatment Facility, where it will be blended with LAW, concentrated by evaporation and recycled to the LAW vitrification facility again. Alternate disposition of this stream would eliminate recycling of problematic components, and would enable de-coupled operation of the LAW melter and the Pretreatment Facilities. Eliminating this stream from recycling within WTP would also decrease the LAW vitrification mission duration and quantity of canistered glass waste forms. This LAW Off-Gas Condensate stream contains components that are volatile at melter temperatures and are problematic for the glass waste form. Because this stream recycles within WTP, these components accumulate in the Condensate stream, exacerbating their impact on the number of LAW glass containers that must be produced. Approximately 32% of the sodium in Supplemental LAW comes from glass formers used to make the extra glass to dilute the halides to be within acceptable concentration ranges in the LAW glass. Diverting the stream reduces the halides in the recycled Condensate and …

Temperature calculations for a newly designed flexible HCR for the K Reactors (open access)

Temperature calculations for a newly designed flexible HCR for the K Reactors

The steadily increasing graphite stack distortion in the K Reactors has caused serious operating problems with the existing horizontal control rods. To compound the seriousness of the problems, the high level of reactor operation today and the anticipated higher level of operation in the future demands a reliable control rod system. A flexible control rod has been designed by Reactor Design, IPD, to facilitate reliable operation of the HCR system in spite of channel bowing arising from graphite stack distortion. This flexible control rod design is radically different from the existing K Reactor control rods and in fact, is more closely aligned to the control rods now in use at the older Hanford Reactors. The major difference of the new rod is the elimination of intimate contact between the poison-containing section of the rod and the cooling water. Such a change in design as described above could result in significant changes in the operating temperatures of the rod proper. This study was undertaken to provide a calculated indication of the temperature changes and the relative magnitude of such changes relative to reactor power levels, graphite temperatures, coolant temperatures, etc. In addition to this basic information, the scope of the study …

Phase Diagram of Iron, Revised-Core Temperatures (open access)

Phase Diagram of Iron, Revised-Core Temperatures

Shock-wave experiments on iron preheated to 1,573 K conducted from 14 to 73 GPa, yield new data for sound velocities of the {gamma}- and liquid-phases. Melting was observed in the highest pressure ({approximately} 71 {+-} 2 GPa) experiments at calculated shock temperatures of 2,775 {+-} 160 K. This single crossing of the {gamma}-liquid boundary measured here agrees closely with the {gamma}-iron melting line determined by Boehler [1993], Saxena et al. [1993], and Jephcoat and Besedin [1997]. This {gamma}-iron melting curve is {approximately} 300 C lower than that of Shen et al. [1998b] at 80 GPa.
