An error Analysis of R-C Timers (open access)

An error Analysis of R-C Timers

The results of this paper show that a variation is sensing voltage produces an error in timing which increases logarithmically with time interval. Also, variation in supply voltage produces the same type of errors, but the errors are decreased by the ratio of the sensing to supply voltage. An interesting conclusion from this analysis is that if the ratio of supply to sensing voltages is maintained constant, no change in timing will result.

A Transistorized Binary Counter for Extreme Environments (open access)

A Transistorized Binary Counter for Extreme Environments

A transistorized binary counter circuit is described that operates over a temperature range of -65 degree F to +165 degree F. the supply voltage is 28 + 4 volts and the maximum trigger repetition rate is 5 kilocycles. the binary circuit is pre-settable and resettable by means of a switching arrangement that can be mechanized. Texas Instrument type 904 silicon transistors whose large signal current gain is 2.8 or greater at a -65 degree F can be used in this circuit.

Respiratory Protective Equipment, Progress Report for June 1959 to April 1960

"Dust and gas masks and respirators have been an effective method under certain environmental conditions to reduce the inhalation of toxic aerosols. Under many conditions, however, their efficacy has been seriously questioned. It is the purpose of this study to evaluation over-all respirator performance on fine aerosols and to develop equipment whereby a greater degree of respiratory protection may be assured with reliability for highly toxic atmospheres."

Fractionation of Fission Products and Heavy Elements by Volatilization Methods

Technical report describing the attempt to separate the long lived fission product oxides by volatilization methods. A fractionization crucible was used. The fractionations give a fair idea of the relative volatilities of the longer lived fission products and also of the degrees of separation of the plutonium oxide or oxides from the fission products.

The Preparation of High-Purity Beryllium Oxide (open access)

The Preparation of High-Purity Beryllium Oxide

Abstract. A method for the preparation of beryllium oxide of high purity is presented. Beryllium basic acetate (BeO-3Be(C2H3O2)2) is prepared from the metal or a convenient salt, a chloroform solution of this material extracted with redistilled water, the dried basic acetate distilled in a quartz apparatus, and this purified material converted to the oxide by fuming down with sulfuric acid and igniting at 1000 degrees C. Impurities detectable spectrographically were reduced to a very low level.

The Rapid Determination of Nitric Acid and Thorium in Thorium Nitrate Solutions (open access)

The Rapid Determination of Nitric Acid and Thorium in Thorium Nitrate Solutions

Abstract. The physico-chemical methods of determining nitric acid and thorium nitrate in solutions containing these two materials were investigated. Conductimetric titration with sodium hydroxide can be used to determine nitric acid accurately. the titration of thorium nitrate requires a separate standardization of the base however, since a basic salt is precipitated rather the normal hydroxide. The titration of thorium is reproductible however, so and empirical standardization can be used. The measurement of the specific gravity and refractivity of the solutions provides a method of determining the concentrations in terms of these two variable. Equations for the concentrations in terms of specific gravity and refractively are given, both in pure solutions and in those saturated with methyl isobutyl ketone.

Discriminator Calibrator (open access)

Discriminator Calibrator

To calibrate a pulse height discriminator, the amplitude of the calibrating pulse must be known. If the amplitude is known, the discriminator dial may be calibrated in terms of the input signal required to just trip it. This is the purpose for which the Discriminator Calibrator was designed. It produces pulses of variable but known amplitude with a rep. rate variable from 3 pps to 4000 pps. The main use of this unit at the UCRL is in conjunction with scalers at fixed counting locations.

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium (open access)

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium

The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.

Outgassing Tests of Uranium Slugs (open access)

Outgassing Tests of Uranium Slugs

During the canning of slugs for Production Test 313-105-3-M, a high number of rejects were caused by gas voids in the A1-S1 bonding layer. Since the heat treatment of the slugs in a molten salt bath resulted in a chemically altered surface, an investigation was made to determine the volume of gas evolved from salt-bath heat-treated slugs as compared to other types of slugs. This test was designed as a preliminary test to determine if there were a significant differences.

Thorium-Molybdenum Phase Diagram (open access)

Thorium-Molybdenum Phase Diagram

From abstract: "The phase diagram of the thorium-molybdenum alloy system has been determined to be the eutectic type with a eutectoid reaction associated with the thorium alpha-beta transformation. X-ray, thermal, electrical resistance and metallographic methods have established the eutectic point at 1380 ± 10°C and 7.0 ± 0.5 wt % molybdenum. A eutectoid reaction is proposed at 1358 ± 5°C and less than 0.1 wt % molybdenum. No solubility of thorium in molybdenum was detected at 1325°C."
