West of Oklahoma City, U.S. 66 has almost disappeared. In most places, its name has been changed to I-40 and in another five years, the tranformation will be complete. To the east, U.S. 66 still meanders toward Tulsa and up into Missouri, but turnpike-hugging travelers choose to ignore it. California-bound Okies are on the interstates now, their chrome-trimmed pickups and red convertibles and sleek sedans gliding 70 miles an hour into the future. They don't remember the mud and gravel and detours that their predecessors encountered. They don't know the hazards of suddenly rising rivers or sand that could swallow a car until even mules strained to pull it free. To turn the clock back, a curious traveler need to go no farther than Bridgeport, a tiny farm community west of Oklahoma …
