The University of Oklahoma crowd was still jubilant over a touchdown that quarterback Eddie Johnson had scored against the University of Missouri. It was Oklahoma's homecoming game and OU wanted victory. Then it happened. The wooden beams of a pavilion on the north side of the field groaned eerily and collapsed, hurling a mass of spectators to the ground. One small boy was found unconscious. Arthur Hallum, OU advertising instructor, was hospitalized with a twisted back. Ben Butler, Oklahoma City, suffered a sprained neck and Mrs. Ruby Smith, also of Oklahoma City, sustained a sprained ankle. Hallum's 4-year-old daughter was slightly hurt by a chunk of flying wood.......It was not by accident, but perhaps because of one, that Bennie Owen, then OU's head coach, decided the Sooner team needed to have a new stadium...He talked over the idea with Cheebie Graham, YMCA secretary in Norman. Graham wanted a Union building and Owen wanted the stadium. So they teamed up on all-out drive.......He had learned football from two masters, Wylie Woodruff and Fielding …
