Additional Miscellaneous Tools in the HRT Core

This memorandum presents a description of several additional miscellaneous HRT core maintenance tools, not in an earlier report (1). These tools were used in the removal of the cut up diffuser plates, probing the core wall, gauging the size of the holes, and other simple tasks. Function, design, and operation are described for the following items.

Comparison of Flame Photometer and Conductivity Meter for the Determination of NaCl from Respirator Testing (open access)

Comparison of Flame Photometer and Conductivity Meter for the Determination of NaCl from Respirator Testing

periodically the Industrial Hygiene Unit has the occasion to perform efficiency tests on respiratory protective devices and on filter cartridges used with these units. A study of the relative merits of the flame photometer and conductivity meter was made to determine which is more applicable for the determination of NaCl in filter samples.

The Grüneisen Parameter for an Einstein Solid and Under Finite Strain (open access)

The Grüneisen Parameter for an Einstein Solid and Under Finite Strain

The Grüneisen constant, as evaluated from the equation of state, is obtained for an Einstein solid. the presence of a state of finite hydrostatic pressure is taken into account explicitly by means of Murnaghan's theory of finite strain, to obtain the Grüneisen parameter's on the Debye and Einstein models. Results are identical in the two cases with the corresponding values obtained without use of the formal theory of finite strain.

High Energy Excitation Functions in the Heavy Region (open access)

High Energy Excitation Functions in the Heavy Region

The electrostatically deflected beam of the 184-inch cyclotron has been used with the stacked foil and absorber technique to determine the excitation functions. The data are presented graphically and discussed individually for each of the reactions. The results are discussed in terms of compound nucleus formation, transparency effects, and other factors in order to arrive at a qualitative picture for the mechanism of high energy nuclear reactions with heavy nuclei.

Measurement of Weak Neutron Intensities by Szilard-Chalmers Reaction in Calcium Permanganate Solution (open access)

Measurement of Weak Neutron Intensities by Szilard-Chalmers Reaction in Calcium Permanganate Solution

From abstract: "A sensitive method for measuring the intensity of weak neutron sources by measuring induced Mn56 beta activity after concentration by a Szilard-Chalmers process has been developed. The practical detection efficiency for Ra-Be neutron is 7.8%; the procedure is capable of detecting a neutron intensity of about one neutron per second."

Methods of Analysis of Fission Products in the Experimental Biology Section (open access)

Methods of Analysis of Fission Products in the Experimental Biology Section

From abstract: "This report describes methods used for radiochemical analysis of fission products most used in the Experimental Biology Section. The report includes methods of analysis of Sr89, Ba140-La140, Zr95-Cb95, Ce144-Pr144, and Y91 by standard chemical procedures. In addition, a method of analysis by use of an absorption curve is described in some detail for Zr95-Cb95 mixtures. The absorption curve method makes possible rapid determination of percentage composition of a mixture of isotopes with a minimum of chemical manipulation by utilizing the differences in absorption characteristics of the emitted rays."
