CROSSING OF AN INCOHERENT INTEGRAL RESONANCE IN THE ELECTRON RING ACCELERATOR (open access)

CROSSING OF AN INCOHERENT INTEGRAL RESONANCE IN THE ELECTRON RING ACCELERATOR

In one mode of operation of an electron ring accelerator (ERA), at the end of compression rings are slowly moved through the radial integral betatron resonance Q{sub r} = 1. Although the coherent radial oscillation frequency of the ring as a whole remains below unit, the oscillation frequencies of individual electron are (incoherently) caused to pass through the resonance because of the additional focusing from ions trapped in the ring. In this paper the effect of field errors on ring major and minor radii is evaluated--theoretically--for the cases in which the spread in the square of the electron oscillation frequency ({Delta}{sup 2}) is (a) much larger and (b) much smaller than the contribution to the square of the oscillation frequency from the ions ({Lambda}{sup 2}). It is shown that for the ERA, where case (b) applies, the increase in ring minor dimensions, for given field errors and rate of resonance crossing, is less than in case (a) by a factor of ({Delta}/{Lambda}){sup 2}. Numerical examples show that the degradation of ring quality in case (b) should, with suitable attention to the design and construction of the ERA apparatus, be acceptably small.

Radioisotopes released in DUN liquid effluents (open access)

Radioisotopes released in DUN liquid effluents

Per your request, we have summarized for both the single-pass reactors and N Reactor the amount of radioisotopes released in DUN reactor liquid effluents. Wherever possible, the sources of the radioisotope and the important parameters which influence the release of the radioisotope have been identified. Because of the great dissimilarities between the two types of reactors, the data are discussed on an individual basis.

Examination of four-sodium-water reaction target tubes (open access)

Examination of four-sodium-water reaction target tubes

Metallurgical examinations and evaluations were performed on a group of four target tubes from Atomic Power Development Associates (APDA) Rig 10. This group included two 2/sup 1///sub 4/ Cr--1 Mo ferritic steel tubes, one Type 304 SS, and one Incoloy 800 tube. These tubes had been exposed to small leaks of water in 600/sup 0/F sodium. Metallographic data indicate that the material loss (wastage) was primarily due to impact (or erosion) of liquid particles. No evidence of corrosion was found in the wasted areas of any target tubes. Minor corrosion was observed on the outside diameter of the austenitic stainless-steel tubes only in areas away from impact; no corrosion was detected on the outside diameter of the ferritic steel tubes. Hardness measurements and microstructural analyses revealed that the maximum temperature may have reached 1600/sup 0/F in the wasted areas. This localized temperature increase appeared to enhance the wastage process for all target tubes regardless of composition. Surface grain elongation and plastic deformation lines were observed in wasted areas, as well as in other areas. However, their cause(s) cannot be ascertained with respect to deformation due to water-jet impact, or deformation due to fabrication and handling, or both. Based on the …

Radiologic aspects associated with the ground disposal of K Reactor effluent (open access)

Radiologic aspects associated with the ground disposal of K Reactor effluent

During normal operation the quantity of radionuclides present in K reactor effluent, when diluted in the river, produce concentrations of radioactivity that are, on the average, a few percent of the limiting values of present government standards (I0CFR20). The radioactive concentrations in the effluent prior to dilution in the river are a few times the upper limit of the present government standards (10CFR20). This paper will address itself to the assessment of the radiological implications of the production, disposal, and future release of radioactive material attendant with the ground disposal of the K reactor effluent. Particular emphasis will be placed on the future release, to uncontrolled areas, and of stored radioactive material as a result of a ``once in a century`` accident.

Environmental status of the Hanford reservation for July--December 1969 (open access)

Environmental status of the Hanford reservation for July--December 1969

Data are reported on the radioactivity of environmental samples collected from locations within the Hanford plant boundaries during the last six months of 1969. Data are included on: the total alpha activity and content of / sup 90/Sr and tritium in samples of Columbia River water; the total BETA activity of samples of drinking water; the total alpha , BETA , and gamma activity of samples of surface wnters; the total BETA activity and /sup 131/I content of samples of surface air; and the total alpha , BETA , and gamma activity and content of /sup 95/Zr, /sup 106/Ru, /sup 134/Cs, /sup 137/Cs, /sup 140/Ba, /sup 144/Ce, /sup 238/Pu, /sup 239/Pu and /sup 240/Pu of air filter samples. Est imates were made of the average external gamma - radiation exposure rates of personnel. (CH)
