Patent for improvement in andirons “which is so arranged as to permit ready access to the fireplace for the purpose of cleaning out the ashes and having a removable fender which is capable of being quickly and readily removed or placed in position to retain the fire and prevent the fire from rolling out the fireplace.” (Lines 47-54.) Patent for an improved construction of a bed-slat fastener, one "adapted to support a bed-slat firmly in position and to prevent the side rails of a bedstead from springing outward" (lines 14-16). There are also "no recesses or crevices for the accumulation of vermin" (lines 19-20) in this design.
