A Solubility Method of the Determination of Non-Volatile Material in Tetrachloride Charges

Abstract: "This report suggests using methyl acetate extraction of charge material as a means of determining the non-volatile residue. It is shown that the volatile constituents of charge material are all extremely soluble in methyl acetate whereas the non-volatile materials are quite insoluble. Percent NVH on several samples of charge material by this method are reported and discussed."

Development of Equipment for the Purification of Mercury by Distillation (open access)

Development of Equipment for the Purification of Mercury by Distillation

Abstract: "An investigation of the mercury salvage program has resulted in the development of an improved high compacity type of distillation apparatus. The still, electrically heated and essentially automatic in its operation, will produce at a rate greater than 75 pounds per hour and develop a product 99.99% pure or better. This still will handle the lowest grade crude of amalgam that can pass through the feed lines and will continue to develop a pure prodcut for comparatively long periods of time. The clean-out operation is amazingly simple and convenient and may be done within one-half hour while the apparatus itself is still hot. Two models of this design are scheduled for installation in a mercury recovery room of the Alpha Analytical Department of Building No. 9207."

A Note on the Kinetics of Homogeneous Piles (open access)

A Note on the Kinetics of Homogeneous Piles

Abstract. In investigating stability of a homogeneous pile it has been customary to assume that the production of bubbles follows the production of power instantaneously. Here we investigate the implications of introduction of an intermediate dissolved gas stage under two hypotheses on the formation of bubbles from this dissolved gas. It is seen that this additional stage tends to make the pile unstable.

The Solubility of Helium in Tuballoy (open access)

The Solubility of Helium in Tuballoy

This technical report summarizes the work done in attempting to determine the solubility of helium in tuballoy. In general, the method used has been to allow the tuballoy to stand in contact with helium at one atmosphere presume at a fixed temperature for an extended period, then to pump off the excess helium to a low pressure in as short a time as possible (10-6 mm of Hg or less). The system was then closed off and the pressure increase was measured by a suitable gauge as a function of time. The metal was employed in the form of a powder in early measurements, and later as massive metal. The experimental techniques are described in the report.

Methods of Analysis of Fission Products in the Experimental Biology Section

From abstract: "This report describes methods used for radiochemical analysis of fission products most used in the Experimental Biology Section. The report includes methods of analysis of Sr89, Ba140-La140, Zr95-Cb95, Ce144-Pr144, and Y91 by standard chemical procedures. In addition, a method of analysis by use of an absorption curve is described in some detail for Zr95-Cb95 mixtures. The absorption curve method makes possible rapid determination of percentage composition of a mixture of isotopes with a minimum of chemical manipulation by utilizing the differences in absorption characteristics of the emitted rays."

Studies in Beta and Gamma Ray Spectroscopy (open access)

Studies in Beta and Gamma Ray Spectroscopy

The study of artificial radioactive isotopes is at the present time one of the most important topics in nuclear research. It involves the establishment of a detailed term scheme for the disintegration in question. Not only are the energies of the components of the different beta and gamma radiations of interest, but also their intensities. These data give information concerning the probabilities of transitions between the different nuclear energy levels. From them it is possible to draw conclusions regarding the mechanism of the disintegration and to correlate the spina and parities of the levels.

High Energy Excitation Functions in the Heavy Region

The electrostatically deflected beam of the 184-inch cyclotron has been used with the stacked foil and absorber technique to determine the excitation functions. The data are presented graphically and discussed individually for each of the reactions. The results are discussed in terms of compound nucleus formation, transparency effects, and other factors in order to arrive at a qualitative picture for the mechanism of high energy nuclear reactions with heavy nuclei.

A Spectrophotometric Determination of Multimicrogram Amounts of Plutonium (open access)

A Spectrophotometric Determination of Multimicrogram Amounts of Plutonium

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of plutonium wing sodium alizarin sulfonate has been developed. The red plutonium-alizarin sulfonate color is developed in solutions having a pH of about three in the presence of a formic acid-sodium formate buffer, and the resulting absorption is measured at 530 millimicrons. Most interfering cations, particularly iron(III), are removed from the plutonium solutions by means of electrolysis using a mercy cathode. Aluminum(III), in quantities up to 3 percent of the plutonium content, may be tolerated in this procedure. Chloride and nitrate ions produce no interference over the concentration range studied, while tartrate, citrate, oxalate, and fluoride ions cause low results. The analysis of a large series of pure plutonium solutions, ranging from about 25 to 150 micrograms of plutonium in 10 milliliters, have a standard deviation of 0.92 percent for the determined plutonium content.
