Development of an operational multicomponent personnel neutron dosimeter/spectrometer DOSPEC

A multicomponent dosimeter has been developed that uses an albedo detector to provide the measurement of low energy neutrons and as a screening element. It also contains track detector components, CR-39 and polycarbonate, which are only processed if the TLD indicates there has been an exposure to neutrons. Since the three components have significantly different energy responses, the dosimeter can act as a crude spectrometer. This report describes the dosimeter and briefly summarizes its use experience. 10 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

Fabrication of a Set of Realistic Torso Phantoms for Calibration of Transuranic Nuclide Lung Counting Facilities

A set of 16 tissue equivalent torso phantoms has been fabricated for use by major laboratories involved in counting transuranic nuclides in the lung. These phantoms, which have bone equivalent plastic rib cages, duplicate the performance of the DOE Realistic Phantom set. The new phantoms (and their successors) provide the user laboratories with a highly realistic calibration tool. Moreover, use of these phantoms will allow participating laboratories to intercompare calibration information, both on formal and informal bases. 3 refs., 2 figs.

Control of gas input and background pressure in the end plug regions of the TMX-U thermal barrier experiment

Rate equations for the plasma species in a thermal barrier end plug establish an upper bound on the neutral pressure (P) external to the plasma. For the Tandem Mirror Experiment-Upgrade (TMX-U), this bound is P less than or equal to 0.5 - 1.0 x 10/sup -6/ Torr. Initially TMX-U did not satisfy this criterion, and axial end plugging of plasma losses seemed limited by the excessive pressure. Subsequently, we modified the machine to improve the vacuum conditions, decreasing P to the desired range. At the same time axial end plugging of plasma losses increased to the duration of neutral beam injection and ECRH heating. Here we summarize our experimental measurements of gas input.

Beam-head erosion in a highly conductive background

An analytic estimate of beam heat erosion in a highly conductive background is presented and compared to numerical results. Model equations are derived and forced into a self-similar form from which parameter scalings are easily obtained. It is found that erosion in this limit is driven by scattering and is very rapid for high conductivities (greater than or equal to 10/sup 11/) due to the high fraction of current neutralization.

Update on Beam Extraction

At the time of the 1981 Workshop on Experimental Use of the SLC, we published an extraction scheme for the MINIQUAD final focus (FF) optics. Since then a different FF optics design has been selected. With the same achromat section and outboard telescope, it allows a number of options for the inboard telescope. This note describes the new extraction system and briefly considers electron-electron extraction and the consequences of an extraction kicker malfunction. 4 references, 7 figures, 1 table.

Phase and amplitude control system for Stanford Linear Accelerator

The computer controlled phase and amplitude detection system measures the instantaneous phase and amplitude of a 1 micro-second 2856 MHz rf pulse at a 180 Hz rate. This will be used for phase feedback control, and also for phase and amplitude jitter measurement. The program, which was originally written by John Fox and Keith Jobe, has been modified to improve the function of the system. The software algorithms used in the measurement are described, as is the performance of the prototype phase and amplitude detector system.

ENSL82 and CDRL82: the 1982 version of evaluated nuclear structure libraries ENSL and CDRL

Since the issuance of UCRL 50400 Vol. 23, ENSL and CDRL: Evaluated Nuclear Structure Libraries, errors have been noted in half-lives. Most of these errors were for half-lives represented in exponential form, where the exponent is positive. This situation occurs only when the unit for half-life is years. A few errors were associated with ground states having unknown half-lives. These were incorrectly labeled as stable (i.e., a value of 1.0 E + 50 s was entered). Such ground states are assigned half-lives of 1.0 E - 20 s in the new version of the two data files. In all, we found a total of 65 levels that had incorrect half-lives. These levels and the corrected half-lives are listed.

Assessment and cleanup of the Taxi Strip waste storage area at LLNL (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory)

In September 1982 the Hazards Control Department of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) began a final radiological survey of a former low-level radioactive waste storage area called the Taxi Strip so that the area could be released for construction of an office building. Collection of soil samples at the location of a proposed sewer line led to the discovery of an old disposal pit containing soil contaminated with low-level radioactive waste and organic solvents. The Taxi Strip area was excavated leading to the discovery of three additional small pits. The clean-up of Pit No. 1 is considered to be complete for radioactive contamination. The results from the chlorinated solvent analysis of the borehole samples and the limited number of samples analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry indicate that solvent clean-up at this pit is complete. This is being verified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis of a few additional soil samples from the bottom sides and ends of the pit. As a precaution, samples are also being analyzed for metals to determine if further excavation is necessary.
