Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "Five speacialists from Oklahoma State university performed emergency surgery Thursday on Roger, Lincoln Park zoo's giraffe, in an effort to save his life. The 14-foot tall children;s wonder was felled by illness Wednesday night which left him in critical condition. Veterinary surgeons said they could not predict whether Roger will survive. they listed his condition as "grave." The surgical team consisted of Dr. J. Wiley Wolf, director of clinics at the college of veterinary medicine, Oklahoma State university; Dr. Lester Johnson, director of large animals clinics; Dr. J. B. Corcoran, pathologist; and two senior students, Robert Lawrence and Louis Heavner. During the heat of the day, the team worked under a tent outside the giraffe building. They performed an exploratory laparotomy with the same precision and care offered humans undergoing similar surgery. Delicate instrunments cut an incision in the huge belly and the doctors searched for an obstruction they felt earlier might be the cause of Roger's serious illness. They found complete paralysis in a section of Roger's intestine and cleared the passage."
