A vector study of linearized supersonic flow applications to nonplanar problems

A vector study of the partial-differential equation of steady linearized supersonic flow is presented. General expressions which relate the velocity potential in the stream to the conditions on the disturbing surfaces, are derived. In connection with these general expressions the concept of the finite part of an integral is discussed. A discussion of problems dealing with planar bodies is given and the conditions for the solution to be unique are investigated. Problems concerning nonplanar systems are investigated, and methods are derived for the solution of some simple nonplanar bodies. The surface pressure distribution and the damping in roll are found for rolling tails consisting of four, six, and eight rectangular fins for the Mach number range where the region of interference between adjacent fins does not affect the fin tips.

Memorandum presenting the results of wind-tunnel oscillation tests to measure the rotary derivatives of a research airplane configuration at supersonic speeds. Measurements were made of the damping in yaw, pitch, and roll, the static longitudinal and directional stability derivatives, the effective-dihedral derivative, the rolling moment due to yawing, and the yawing moment due to rolling. The configuration was found to be statistically stable throughout the Mach number range, although its stability was becoming marginal at high angles of attack at Mach number 3.5.

Report presenting an investigation in the 300 mph 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine what modifications could be made to conventional bomb bays to reduce the tumbling difficulties experienced with light-weight bombs. The investigation indicated that there is a definite region of reversed flow inside the bomb bay which must be weakened or destroyed if good drops are to be obtained.

Report presents the results of wind tunnel tests of the Clark Y, the NACA 23012 and the NACA 23021 airfoils equipped with full-span ordinary flaps and with full-span simple split flaps. The principal object of the tests was to determine the characteristics of the airfoils with ordinary flaps and in addition, to determine the relative merits of the various airfoils when equipped with either ordinary flaps or with simple split flaps. The Clark Y airfoil was tested with 3 widths of ordinary flap, 10, 20, and 30 percent of the airfoil chord.

Report discussing zero-lift drag data for several bomb configurations at various Mach numbers. Seven configurations were tested with different combinations of interchangeable noses and tail cones with fins, some with different surface conditions. Surface conditions were not found to affect the drag, but the thickness of the tail fins and shape of the noses did change the shape of the drag curve.
