"Measurement of average skin-friction coefficients have been made on six rocket-powered free-flight models by using the boundary-layer rake technique. The model configuration was the NACA RM-10, a 12.2-fineness-ratio parabolic body of revolution with a flat base. Measurements were made over a Mach number range from 1 to 3.7, a Reynolds number range 40 x 10(exp 6) to 170 x 10(exp 6) based on length to the measurement station, and with aerodynamic heating conditions varying from strong skin heating to strong skin cooling" (p. 1).

Report presenting tests to determine the flight characteristics of an F-86 airplane equipped with a blowing-type boundary-layer-control installation on the trailing-edge flaps. The effectiveness of the flap was determined in conjunction with slatted leading edges and an inflatable rubber boot on the leading edge. Measurements were made of lift, drag, flow requirements, and computations for take-off, climb, and landing.

Report presenting an investigation to determine the zero-lift rolling effectiveness of all-movable sweptback horizontal tail fins mounted behind a notched delta wing at a constant angle of differential incidence of 7 degree per fin. Two models, one with a stiff wing and one with a flexible wing, were tested in free flight over a range of Mach numbers. The rolling effectiveness was about the same magnitude at subsonic and supersonic speeds for both models.

The results show that the configuration drag rise was significantly higher than that from the equivalent-body tests and area-rule theory throughout the Mach number range. Configurations investigated incorporated a cylindrical control sleeve which confined the injected fuel at low over-all fuel-air ratios to about 40 percent of the engine air flow. This provided an optimum fuel-air mixture over a portion of the flame holder when the over-all fuel-air ratio was about 0.02."

The results indicated that outboard horizontal tails can be a very effective means of counteracting the trend toward longitudinal instability characteristics of many sweptback wings. Results regarding the effects of changes in horizontal-tail position, effects of wing fences, average downwash at the tail, effects of changing tail size, lift, drag, and pitching-moment characteristics, and effects of flaps are provided.

"Small-perturbation spectral-analysis techniques are used to obtain the root-mean-square flame-generated turbulence velocities and the attenuating pressure fluctuations stemming from interaction of a constant-pressure flame front with a field of isotropic turbulence in the absence of turbulence decay processes. The anisotropic flame-generated turbulence velocities are found to be of about the same intensity as those of the incident isotropic turbulence, the lateral turbulence velocities being always lower, but the longitudinal velocity is somewhat increased for flame-temperature ratios over 7" (p. 599).
