Modified tubular support patterns: Ribbed and ribless process tubes

Reactor support charge designs and patterns have been numerous and varied over the past few years, the basis for acceptance of a particular support loading being determined from a consideration of fabrication costs and the hydraulic characteristics of the proposed dummy load as it applies to a particular reactor. Since the first three or four dummy pieces downstream of the fuel column (and upstream of the column in a spline tube) are discarded after the irradiation process, it is desirable to use tubular dummies for this portion of the support charge which are less expensive to fabricate and which are easily identified during the charging-discharging process. However, there exists a remote possibility that one or more tubular pieces could be inadvertently placed in a rear nozzle resulting in a flow restriction in the process tube. These arrangements of tubular support pieces in the dummy pattern, i.e., tubulars positioned against the fuel column and/or in the process tube rear nozzles, have been hydraulically tested to determine if there is adequate and unrestricted flow at normal operating header pressures.

Final Technical Report for Award DE-FG02-05ER41389 A New Electrostatically-Focused, UV HPD for Liquid Xenon: A Direct Comparison with APD, PMT, SiPM in an Integrated Database

Within the scope of the project, a LXe detector and associated gas handling and purification system were set up to study the response of various photodetectors to the VUV Xe light. In particular we tested an Advanced Photonix Large Area Avalanche Photodiode (APD), Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) from two different sources and an Hamamtsu Photonics APD. As part of the XENON Dark Matter project, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, we have accumulated independent knowledge of the response of compact metal channel photomultipliers. At this stage, we conclude that the last are far superior in terms of reliability and performance in a LXe detector environment. More studies are needed with APDs and SiPMs in LXe, taking advantage of the improved performance of these sensors with time. We could not test a hybrid PMT (HPD) since the only available unit on loan from one manufacturer lacked the mechanical stability and was packaged in a form not compatible with LXe purity requirements. Meanwhile, within the XENON collaboration, we are developing with Hamamatsu a hybrid PMT which is named QUPID (Quartz Photon Intensifying Detector) which promises to solve the problems of radioactivity and purity encountered with previous HPDs. An Isochronal Differential Microcalorimeter

An isochronal differential-type microcalorimeter has been designed and constructed. As a result of its simple design it is very easy to handle the samples and assemble the calorimeter. Important to the operation of the calorimeter is a program, also working on the differential principle, that provides linear temperature rise of the samples. This calorimeter is used to measure very small energy releases such as those found in precipitation, stored energy, etc. It is demonstrated that the calorimeter is easily capable of measuring 0.0005 cal with a probable error of the order of 1% to 2%.

Compatible Spatial Discretizations for Partial Differential Equations

From May 11--15, 2004, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications held a hot topics workshop on Compatible Spatial Discretizations for Partial Differential Equations. The numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDE) is a fundamental task in science and engineering. The goal of the workshop was to bring together a spectrum of scientists at the forefront of the research in the numerical solution of PDEs to discuss compatible spatial discretizations. We define compatible spatial discretizations as those that inherit or mimic fundamental properties of the PDE such as topology, conservation, symmetries, and positivity structures and maximum principles. A wide variety of discretization methods applied across a wide range of scientific and engineering applications have been designed to or found to inherit or mimic intrinsic spatial structure and reproduce fundamental properties of the solution of the continuous PDE model at the finite dimensional level. A profusion of such methods and concepts relevant to understanding them have been developed and explored: mixed finite element methods, mimetic finite differences, support operator methods, control volume methods, discrete differential forms, Whitney forms, conservative differencing, discrete Hodge operators, discrete Helmholtz decomposition, finite integration techniques, staggered grid and dual grid methods, etc. This workshop seeks to foster …

In order to accomplish this goal, the use of a stable-positional-reference system has become apparent. Bromine Exchange in Graphite-Bromine Lamellar Compounds

A kinetic study of the exchange of normal and radioactive bromine in graphite-bromine lamellar compounds has been made at temperatures of 30° to 50°C. Natural and synthetic graphite powders were investigated. Two alternative mechanisms for the exchange, volume diffusion and surface exchange, were considered. The data were in better agreement with the diffusion mechanism. Diffusion coefficients of 10 -9 to 10 -8 cm2/sec and an activation energy of 11 to 14 kcal/mole were calculated for the natural graphite powders. The diffusion coefficients increased with increasing bromine content. Reversibly absorbed bromine exchanged more rapidly than irreversibly absorbed bromine.

Gene expression profiles of Nitrosomonas europaea, an obligate chemolitotroph

Nitrosomonas europaea is an aerobic lithoautotrophic bacterium that uses ammonia (NH3) as its energy source. As a nitrifier, it is an important participant in the nitrogen cycle, which can also influence the carbon cycle. The focus of this work was to explore the genetic structure and mechanisms underlying the lithoautotrophic growth style of N. europaea. Whole genome gene expression: The gene expression profile of cells in exponential growth and during starvation was analyzed using microarrays. During growth, 98% of the genes increased in expression at least two fold compared to starvation conditions. In growing cells, approximately 30% of the genes were expressed eight fold higher, Approximately 10% were expressed more than 15 fold higher. Approximately 3% (91 genes) were expressed to more than 20 fold of their levels in starved cells. Carbon fixation gene expression: N. europaea fixes carbon via the Calvin-Benson-Bassham (CBB) cycle via a type I ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO). This study showed that transcription of cbb genes was up-regulated when the carbon source was limited, while amo, hao and other energy harvesting related genes were down-regulated. During the second half of the 1990's Coal Bed Methane (CBM) production increased dramatically nationwide to represent a significant new source of income and natural gas for many independent and established producers. Matching these soaring production rates during this period was a heightened public awareness of environmental concerns. These concerns left unexplained and under-addressed have created a significant growth in public involvement generating literally thousands of unfocused project comments for various regional NEPA efforts resulting in the delayed development of public and fee lands. The accelerating interest in CBM development coupled to the growth in public involvement has prompted the conceptualization of this project for the development of a CBM Primer. K Basin sludge polychlorinated biphenyl removal technology assessment

The two Hanford K Basins are water-filled concrete pools that contain over 2,100 metric tons of N Reactor fuel elements stored in aluminum or stainless steel canisters. During the time the fuel has been stored, approximately 50 m3 of heterogeneous solid material have accumulated in the basins. This material, referred to as sludge, is a mixture of fuel corrosion products, metallic bits of spent fuel and zirconium clad iron and metal corrosion products and silica from migrating sands. Some of the sludges also contain PCBs. The congener group of PCBs was identified as Aroclor 1254. The maximum concentration of sludge PCBS was found to be 140 ppm (as settled wet basis). However, the distribution of the PCBs is non-uniform throughout the sludge (i.e., there are regions of high and low concentrations and places where no PCBs are present). Higher concentrations could be present at various locations. Aroclors 1016/1242, 1221, 1248, 1254, and 1260 were identified and quantified in K West (KW) Canister sludge. In some of these samples, the concentration of 1260 was higher than 1254. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS OF THE SUCTION HEAD REQUIRED BY THE HALLAM PROTOTYPE FREE SURFACE SODIUM PUMP

Hydraulic tests were made on the Hallam Prototype Free-Surface Sodium Pump to determine the net positive suction head (NPSH) required at various sodium flow rates. Pump performance data were also collected. The results indicate that an NPSH of 22 ft sodium is required at the design flow rate of 7200 gpm at approximates 1000 deg F, agreeing with computed values, and that the pump is designed with a safety margin of slightly over l0%.
