Focusing upgrade for sectors 11 through 19

In order to transport high current, single bunch beams to the SLC positron source for spring 1986 testing, it will be necessary to augment the strength of available focusing in sectors 11 through 19. We have decided to replace the sector doublet type QB quadrupoles with stronger type QE magnets. In conjunction with new Vax controlled power supplies, this sector 11 through 19 doublet lattice can be run at optimal settings for beam energies of several GeV up to the full SLC energy of 32 GeV by sector 19. Installation of the temporary stronger focusing is planned for summer 1985; full SLC FODO array focusing is scheduled for the following summer. This note presents the intermediate solution for sectors 11 through 19. In addition, the sector 10 quadrupole strengths required for matching beams into the doublet array are given. 1 figure, 4 tables.

Pilot plant processing of sodium bifluoride to sodium fluoride pellets

Sodium fluoride (NaF) traps in the PGDP purge cascade presently use NaF pellets to remove residual UF{sub 6} from the gas stream. These pellets are procured from ORGDP which converts sodium bifluoride pellets to NaF by thermal decomposition. Discussions of the possibility of no longer producing pellets at ORGDP, due to oven corrosion problems, led to a pilot plant test at PGDP. This test was designed to examine the feasibility of producing the NaF pellets at PGDP in the event that an alternative source of supply became necessary. Satisfactory pellets were produced without difficulty; however, it was determined that the conversion process could not be readily carried out in the existing NaF traps. Construction of a separate facility with provisions to handle the large quantities of hydrogen fluoride (HF) released during the process would be required to produce pellets at the rate needed. 1 fig., 2 tabs.

Field-independent normalization of SSC Collider Ring costs

The SSC Collider Ring represents the dominating cost element of the SSC project. The number of variables involved in optimizing the facility is very large so it is helpful to try to parameterize them in a way that allows a straightforward comparison of primary options. Cost information has been drawn from the Reference Designs Study supplemented by data from studies carried out by the Harza Engineering Company in Illinois. Various studies indicate that a 9' to 10' tunnel seems optimal from a construction and operation viewpoint and is adequate for installation. According to both studies cited a tunnel of this size in reasonable geology will cost approximately $800 per linear foot. For the purposes of this analysis this is adopted as the standard tunnel.

The traditional approach used to study high energy beam propagation relies on the frozen field approximation. A minor modification of the frozen field approximation yields the set of equations applied to the analysis of the hose instability. These models are constrasted with the Darwin field approximation. A statement is made of the Darwin model equations relevant to the analysis of the hose instability.

This investigation has been stimulated by the question, to what extent beam disruption of two penetrating SLC bunches will modify the initial angular distribution of the incident beam, and whether the tails of the outgoing beam will be significantly enhanced and will lead to increased losses in the vicinity of the detector. The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide has been a matter of pending business before the Senate since its transmittal to that body in 1949. On May 21, 1985, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee recommended that the Senate give its advice and consent to ratification of the Convention subject to eight conditions: two reservations, five understandings, and one declaration. This report examines the differing opinions on whether and under what conditions the Senate should approve ratification of the Genocide Convention.

Thermal stress analysis of the SLAC fixed mask. Addendum

X-ray beams emerging from the new SLAC electron-positron storage ring (PEP) can impinge on the walls of tangential divertor channels. A fixed mask made of OFHC copper is installed in the channel to limit wall heating. The mask is cooled with water flowing axially at 30/sup 0/C. Beam strikes on the mask cause highly localized heating in the channel structure. Analyses were completed to determine the temperatures and thermally-induced stresses due to this heating. The current design and operating conditions should result in the entrance to the fixed mask operating at a peak temperature of 105/sup 0/C with a peak thermal stress at 26% of yield.

Energy and angular distributions of radiation power from bending magnet and wiggler sources at a 6-GeV ring

In order to design radiation ports and beam line components, it is essential to understand the distribution of power from a radiation source as a function of both the photon energy and the solid angle of emission. In this preliminary note, we assemble all the formula involved for the case of a bending magnet and a wiggler. Typical distributions are presented for the case of 6-Gev radiation.

GeoProducts WEN-2 well, Wendel-Amedee, California

The GeoProducts WEN-2 well, drilled 2200 feet northwest of Wendel Hot Springs in Lassen County, California, penetrated 4330 feet (1320 meters) of Tertiary basalt flows and volcanoclastics. Production of 251/sup 0/F (122/sup 0/C) thermal fluids comes either from a fault or from intergranular permeability in a 570-foot thick quartzite conglomerate channel overlying the granitic basement rocks at a depth of 4900 feet. The chemistry, temperature and hydrostatic head of the resource in WEN-2 are very similar to that of WEN-1 to the northeast. Unknown faults in the granitic basement rocks, other than the Wendel fault, may be important channelways for the geothermal system. 4 refs., 3 figs.

Reaction of Topopah Spring tuff with J-13 water: a geochemical modeling approach using the EQ3/6 reaction path code

EQ3/6 geochemical modeling code package was used to investigate the interaction of the Topopah Spring Tuff and J-13 water at high temperatures. EQ3/6 input parameters were obtained from the results of laboratory experiments using USW G-1 core and J-13 water. Laboratory experiments were run at 150 and 250{sup 0}C for 66 days using both wafer-size and crushed tuff. EQ3/6 modeling reproduced results of the 150{sup 0}C experiments except for a small increase in the concentration of potassium that occurs in the first few days of the experiments. At 250{sup 0}C, the EQ3/6 modeling reproduced the major water/rock reactions except for a small increase in potassium, similar to that noted above, and an overall increase in aluminum. The increase in potassium concentration cannot be explained at this time, but the increase in A1 concentration is believed to be caused by the lack of thermodynamic data in the EQ3/6 data base for dachiardite, a zeolite observed as a run product at 250{sup 0}C. The ability to reproduce the majority of the experimental rock/water interactions at 150{sup 0}C validates the use of EQ3/6 as a geochemical modeling tool that can be used to theoretically investigate physical/chemical environments in support of the Waste Package …
