Thin film battery/fuel cell power generation system. Topical report covering Task 5: the design, cost and benefit of an industrial cogeneration system, using a high-temperature solid-oxide-electrolyte (HTSOE) fuel-cell generator (open access)

Thin film battery/fuel cell power generation system. Topical report covering Task 5: the design, cost and benefit of an industrial cogeneration system, using a high-temperature solid-oxide-electrolyte (HTSOE) fuel-cell generator

A literature search and review of the studies analyzing the relationship between thermal and electrical energy demand for various industries and applications resulted in several applications affording reasonable correlation to the thermal and electrical output of the HTSOE fuel cell. One of the best matches was in the aluminum industry, specifically, the Reynolds Aluminum Production Complex near Corpus Christi, Texas. Therefore, a preliminary design of three variations of a cogeneration system for this plant was effected. The designs were not optimized, nor were alternate methods of providing energy compared with the HTSOE cogeneration systems. The designs were developed to the extent necessary to determine technical practicality and economic viability, when compared with alternate conventional fuel (gas and electric) prices in the year 1990.

Design and testing of wood containers for radioactive waste (open access)

Design and testing of wood containers for radioactive waste

A wood container for shipping and storing radioactive waste was designed to eliminate the problems caused by the weight, cost, and shape of the steel containers previously used. Tests specified by federal regulations (compression, free-drop, penetration, and vibration) were conducted on two of the containers, one loaded to 2500 lb and one loaded to 5000 lb. The 5000-lb container failed the free-drop test, but the 2500-lb container easily passed the tests and therefore qualifies as a Type A container. Its simplicity of design, low weight, and ease in handling have proved to be time-saving and cost-effective.

Flexibility of MFTF-B for thermal-barrier modifications and axisymmetric upgrades (open access)

Flexibility of MFTF-B for thermal-barrier modifications and axisymmetric upgrades

Flexibility in MFTB-B will be achieved partly by using the margins in particle and energy control designed into the machine and partly by making modest changes based on results obtained in TMX Upgrade. This latter flexibility is permitted by the schedule for vessel construction and component fabrication. The changes we might expect were determined by an examination of the processes involved in creating a thermal barrier and by speculating on the range of outcomes from TMX Upgrade experiments.

Thresholds and Q values of nuclear reactions induced by neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, /sup 3/He ions, alpha particles, and photons. [Tables] (open access)

Thresholds and Q values of nuclear reactions induced by neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, /sup 3/He ions, alpha particles, and photons. [Tables]

The 1977 Wapstra and Bos nuclear mass data tables were used to derive tables for thresholds and Q values of nuclear reactions induced by neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, /sup 3/He ions, alpha particles, and photons. The tables are displayed on microfiche included with the report.

Cost and quality of fuels for electric utility plants: Energy data report. 1980 annual (open access)

Cost and quality of fuels for electric utility plants: Energy data report. 1980 annual

In 1980 US electric utilities reported purchasng 594 million tons of coal, 408.5 million barrels of oil and 3568.7 billion ft/sup 3/ of gas. As compared with 1979 purchases, coal rose 6.7%, oil decreased 20.9%, and gas increased for the fourth year in a row. This volume presents tabulated and graphic data on the cost and quality of fossil fuel receipts to US electric utilities plants with a combined capacity of 25 MW or greater. Information is included on fuel origin and destination, fuel types, and sulfur content, plant types, capacity, and flue gas desulfurization method used, and fuel costs. (LCL)

Solution of single linear tridiagonal systems and vectorization of the ICCG algorithm on the Cray 1 (open access)

Solution of single linear tridiagonal systems and vectorization of the ICCG algorithm on the Cray 1

The numerical algorithms used to solve the physics equation in codes which model laser fusion are examined, it is found that a large number of subroutines require the solution of tridiagonal linear systems of equations. One dimensional radiation transport, thermal and suprathermal electron transport, ion thermal conduction, charged particle and neutron transport, all require the solution of tridiagonal systems of equations. The standard algorithm that has been used in the past on CDC 7600's will not vectorize and so cannot take advantage of the large speed increases possible on the Cray-1 through vectorization. There is however, an alternate algorithm for solving tridiagonal systems, called cyclic reduction, which allows for vectorization, and which is optimal for the Cray-1. Software based on this algorithm is now being used in LASNEX to solve tridiagonal linear systems in the subroutines mentioned above. The new algorithm runs as much as five times faster than the standard algorithm on the Cray-1. The ICCG method is being used to solve the diffusion equation with a nine-point coupling scheme on the CDC 7600. In going from the CDC 7600 to the Cray-1, a large part of the algorithm consists of solving tridiagonal linear systems on each L line …
