Compatible Spatial Discretizations for Partial Differential Equations (open access)

Compatible Spatial Discretizations for Partial Differential Equations

From May 11--15, 2004, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications held a hot topics workshop on Compatible Spatial Discretizations for Partial Differential Equations. The numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDE) is a fundamental task in science and engineering. The goal of the workshop was to bring together a spectrum of scientists at the forefront of the research in the numerical solution of PDEs to discuss compatible spatial discretizations. We define compatible spatial discretizations as those that inherit or mimic fundamental properties of the PDE such as topology, conservation, symmetries, and positivity structures and maximum principles. A wide variety of discretization methods applied across a wide range of scientific and engineering applications have been designed to or found to inherit or mimic intrinsic spatial structure and reproduce fundamental properties of the solution of the continuous PDE model at the finite dimensional level. A profusion of such methods and concepts relevant to understanding them have been developed and explored: mixed finite element methods, mimetic finite differences, support operator methods, control volume methods, discrete differential forms, Whitney forms, conservative differencing, discrete Hodge operators, discrete Helmholtz decomposition, finite integration techniques, staggered grid and dual grid methods, etc. This workshop seeks to foster …

Plutonium Reclamation Facility incident response project progress report (open access)

Plutonium Reclamation Facility incident response project progress report

This report provides status of Hanford activities in response to process deficiencies highlighted during and in response to the May 14, 1997, explosion at the Plutonium Reclamation Facility. This report provides specific response to the August 4, 1997, memorandum from the Secretary which requested a progress report, in 120 days, on activities associated with reassessing the known and evaluating new vulnerabilities (chemical and radiological) at facilities that have been shut down, are in standby, are being deactivated or have otherwise changed their conventional mode of operation in the last several years. In addition, this report is intended to provide status on emergency response corrective activities as requested in the memorandum from the Secretary on August 28, 1997. Status is also included for actions requested in the second August 28, 1997, memorandum from the Secretary, regarding timely notification of emergencies.

Transformations of Toluene Radical Cation in ZSM-5 and Silicalite (open access)

Transformations of Toluene Radical Cation in ZSM-5 and Silicalite

Toluene radical cations produced by {gamma} irradiation at 77 K in ZSM-5 and Silicalite (isomorphous with ZSM-5 but nonpolar) undergo a reversible transformation to the norbornadiene radical cation at temperatures {le}150K. The transformation occurs to a greater extent in the more polar zeolite (ZSM-5). The substrate concentration plays an important role. Toluene radical cations undergo ion-molecule reactions to give benzyl radicals at low substrate loading at temperatures >200 K. At higher concentration, different adsorption sites become populated which allow the transformation to norbornadiene radical cation to take place.

Evaluation of End- and Radial-Burning Solid Fuels in Ram Jets Mounted in a Free Jet at Mach Numbers of 2.0, 2.2, and 2.3 (open access)

Evaluation of End- and Radial-Burning Solid Fuels in Ram Jets Mounted in a Free Jet at Mach Numbers of 2.0, 2.2, and 2.3

Report presenting testing of two types of solid fuels in a 6.5-inch-diameter ram-jet engine mounted in a free supersonic jet at several Mach numbers. Results regarding radial-burning fuel, end-burning fuel, and a comparison of the two are provided. Unlike in previous testing, no fuel breakup was noted due to recently developed molding techniques.

Kinetic Effects on the Stability Properties of Field-reversed Configurations: II. Nonlinear Evolution (open access)

Kinetic Effects on the Stability Properties of Field-reversed Configurations: II. Nonlinear Evolution

Results of three-dimensional hybrid simulations of the field-reversed configuration (FRC) are presented. Emphasis of this work is on the nonlinear evolution of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities in kinetic FRCs. A wide range of ''bar s'' values is considered, where the ''bar s'' is the FRC kinetic parameter, which measures the number of ion gyroradii in the configuration. The linear and nonlinear stability of MHD modes with toroidal mode numbers n greater than or equal to 1 is investigated, including the effects of ion rotation, finite electron pressure, and weak toroidal field. Low-''bar s'' simulations show nonlinear saturation of the n = 1 tilt mode. The n greater than or equal to 2 rotational modes are observed to grow during the nonlinear phase of the tilt instability due to ion spin-up in the toroidal direction. Large-''bar s'' simulations show no saturation of the tilt mode, and there is a slow nonlinear evolution of the instability after the initial fast linear growth. Overall, the hybrid simulations demonstrate the importance of nonlinear effects, which are responsible for the saturation of instabilities in low-''bar s'' configurations, and also for the increase in FRC life-time compared to MHD models in high-''bar s'' configurations.

Flight Investigation at Low Angles of Attack to Determine the Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of the Sidewinder Missile at Mach Numbers from 1.2 to 2.1

At the request of the Bureau of Ordnance, Department of the Navy, the Langley Pilotless Aircraft Research Division has initiated a program to investigate the general aerodynamic characteristics of the Naval Ordnance Test Station's SIDEWINDER missile. The model used in the flight test presented herein was a full-scale, rocket-propelled test vehicle. This paper presents the results from a flight test investigation using the pulsed-control technique to determine the static and dynamic longitudinal stability and control derivatives and drag data for a canard-missile configuration.

Possible Incorporation of Neptunium in Uranyl (VI) Alteration Phases (open access)

Possible Incorporation of Neptunium in Uranyl (VI) Alteration Phases

This study examines existing data on Np behavior from both spent fuel and borosilicate glass tests in effort to resolve issues concerning the selection of possible solubility limiting phases for neptunium and the methods for detecting neptunium at low levels in spent fuel. These issues were raised in a recent report by Finch and Fortner (2002) that argues that the Np analysis with Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) reported by Buck et al., (1998) is incorrect and that based on a series of experiments with Np-doped U3O8, NpO2 should be adopted as the solubility controlling phase for Np, in the Yucca Mountain performance assessment model. In this report, we will refute the claim that EELS is unable to detect Np and will suggest that the use of NpO2 as the Np solubility controlling phase is not supported by available scientific data from both spent fuel and borosilicate glass.
