Diamond-turning HP-21 beryllium to achieve an optical surface (open access)

Diamond-turning HP-21 beryllium to achieve an optical surface

Investigation of diamond turning on beryllium was made in anticipation of obtaining an optical finish. Although results of past experiences were poor, it was decided to continue diamond turning on beryllium beyond initial failures. By changing speed and using coolant, partial success was achieved. Tool wear was the major problem. Tests were made to establish and plot wear as a function of cutting speed and time. Slower speeds did cause lower wear rates, but at no time did wear reach an acceptable level. The machine, tools, and procedure used were chosen based on the results of preliminary attempts and on previous experience. It was unnecessary to use an air-bearing spindle because tool failure governed the best finish that could be expected. All tools of diamond composition, whether single crystal or polycrystalline, wore at unacceptable rates. Based on present technology, it must be concluded that beryllium cannot be feasibly diamond turned to achieve an optical finish. (22 fig.) (auth)

Design of a positional reference system for ultraprecision machining (open access)

Design of a positional reference system for ultraprecision machining

The primary goal for an ultraprecision turning machine is to have the capability to position precisely the cutting points of a tool along a defined contour with respect to the part. In order to accomplish this goal, the use of a stable-positional-reference system has become apparent. Several efforts have been made by representatives of the diamond-turning community to design such a needed reference system. Efforts made at Y-12 to design the needed system are reviewed.

Evaluation of the TORE(R)Lance for Radioactive Waste Mobilization and Retrieval from Underground Storage Tanks (open access)

Evaluation of the TORE(R)Lance for Radioactive Waste Mobilization and Retrieval from Underground Storage Tanks

The TORE? Lance is a hand-held hydro transportation device with the ability to convey solids at pre-determined slurry concentrations over great distances. The TORE? Lance head generates a precessing vortex core to mobilize solids. Solids retrieval is accomplished using an eductor. The device contains no parts and requires pressurized fluid to operate the eductor and produce mobilization. Three configurations of TORE? Lance operation were evaluated for mobilization and eduction during these tests: compressed air, water, and an air and water mixture. These tests have shown that the TORE? Lance is a tool that can be used at Hanford for mobilization and retrieval of wastes. The system is versatile and can be configured for many types of applications. These studies showed that the diverse applications require unique solutions so care is recommended for TORE? Lance equipment selection for each application. The two components of the TORE? Lance are the precessing vortex for mobilizing and the eductor for retrieval. The precessing vortex is sensitive to fluid flow rate and pressure. In the hand-held unit these parameters are controlled both internally, by changing shim spacing, and externally by controlling the flow split between the eductor and the head. For in-tank applications out-of-tank control …

Development of a toolbox of organic synthetic reactions that can be induced on individual molecules by STM

OAK B262 Final Report DOE Grant No.: DE-FG03-01ER15263 ''Development of a toolbox of organic synthetic reactions that can be induced on individual molecules by STM'' Abstract Bommisetty V. Rao, Ki-Young Kwon, Robert Perry, Luke Nysen, Gregory Pavin, Qibin Zhang, Casey Dugger and Ludwig Bartels University of California at Riverside, Pierce Hall, Riverside, CA92521, email: Ludwig.Bartels@ucr.edu The key scientific objective of this project is the development of a set of reliable techniques for the addressal of specific bonds of individual molecules in order to assemble functional molecules on a metal surface at single-atom precision. Success in this direction will open up a conceptually novel route to single molecule chemistry, which can provide its products at any desired surface location without involving any lithographic steps at all. In the course of this project a number of halo-substituted aryls and alkyls where investigated with special concern to two properties: clean deposition of the reactants from the gas phase on metallic surfaces and STM-based addressability of individual substituents of them. In order to prevent contamination of the sample by deposition of solvent residue, a special depositions source was developed that uses a skimmed molecular beam. Exemplary substances studied were 1,3-iodobromobenzene (IBB), 3 bromopropionitrile (BPN) …

Assessment of Proton Deflectometry for Exploding Wire Experiments (open access)

Assessment of Proton Deflectometry for Exploding Wire Experiments

This project provides the first demonstration of the application of proton deflectometry for the diagnosis of electromagnetic field topology and current-carrying regions in Z-pinch plasma experiments. Over the course of this project several milestones were achieved. High-energy proton beam generation was demonstrated on the short-pulse high-intensity Leopard laser, (10 Joules in ~350 femtoseconds, and the proton beam generation was shown to be reproducible. Next, protons were used to probe the electromagnetic field structure of short circuit loads in order to benchmark the two numerical codes, the resistive-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code, Gorgon, and the hybrid particle-in-cell code, LSP for the interpretation of results. Lastly, the proton deflectometry technique was used to map the magnetic field structure of pulsed-power-driven plasma loads including wires and supersonic jets formed with metallic foils. Good agreement between the modeling and experiments has been obtained. The demonstrated technique holds great promise to significantly improve the understanding of current flow and electromagnetic field topology in pulsed power driven high energy density plasmas. Proton probing with a high intensity laser was for the first time implemented in the presence of the harsh debris and x-ray producing z-pinch environment driven by a mega-ampere-scale pulsed-power machine. The intellectual merit of the program …

Hg removal from SRTC laboratory waste using an in-tank ion exchange probe

An in-tank ion exchange column, described here, has been constructed to operate in the waste tanks at the Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC). The purpose of the column is to remove dissolved mercury from laboratory wastes and capture them on Duolite{trademark} GT-73 resin. This paper summarizes the results of operation of such a column on two batches of waste in one high activity tank and on one batch of waste in a low activity tank for the purpose of removing mercury from the liquid wastes. Sufficient mercury decontamination was demonstrated with the in-tank resin removal system, after twenty four hours of operation in each tank, to render the waste nonhazardous and enable shipment to the F-Area evaporator.
