Advances in the theory of box integrals

Box integrals - expectations <|{rvec r}|{sup s}> or <|{rvec r}-{rvec q}|{sup s}> over the unit n-cube (or n-box) - have over three decades been occasionally given closed forms for isolated n,s. By employing experimental mathematics together with a new, global analytic strategy, we prove that for n {le} 4 dimensions the box integrals are for any integer s hypergeometrically closed in a sense we clarify herein. For n = 5 dimensions, we show that a single unresolved integral we call K{sub 5} stands in the way of such hyperclosure proofs. We supply a compendium of exemplary closed forms that naturally arise algorithmically from this theory.

Static Corrosion Tests of Fabrication Material for D-12 Waste Evaporator

Three types of stainless steel (309 SCB, Carpenter 20, 304-L) were exposed to both the liquid and vapor phase of each of three types of solutions. The time of exposure totaled ten days during which the specimens were cleaned and weighed periodically. The three synthetic D-12 waste solutions contained respectively chrome-high chloride, chrome-low chloride and high chloride sans chromium. The solutions were renewed at each weighing.

The excretion of hexavalent uranium following intravenous administration. II, Studies on human subjects

Tracer studies employing uranium enriched in the isotopes U{sup 234}, U{sup 235} have been carried out in six human subjects; four males and two females. The uranium, 6 micrograms to 70 micrograms per kilogram of body weight was given intravenously in the hexavalent state as uranyl nitrate. Each individual of the series received a single injection of the metal except for one who was given two widely spaced doses. The first of these was when his condition was normal and the second after an acidosis had been produced by ingestion of ammonium chloride. Renal function tests including urinary catalase, protein, amino N to Creatinine N ratio and clearances of mannitol and p-aminohippurate were done before and after administration of uranium. Only at the 70 microgram per kilogram level in Subject 6 was there a slight rise in urinary catalase and protein suggesting that tolerance had been reached. The excretion of uranium was mainly in the urine, where from 70 to 85% of the administered dose appeared in the first twenty-four hours. Urine of the second twenty-four hours contained about 4% and the third twenty-four hour urine, 1.5% of the administered dose. Detectable amounts were excreted for at least two weeks.

Neutron capture cross sections for /sup 86/Sr and /sup 87/Sr at stellar temperatures. Revision 1

Recent work on s-process nucleosynthesis has focused attention on the investigation of capture cross sections for nuclei in the mass region near the N = 50 closed neutron shell. Of special astrophysical interest are (i) the analysis of the s-process branching through /sup 85/Kr as a monitor of stellar neutron density and temperature and (ii) the investigation of the possible chronometric pair /sup 87/Rb-/sup 87/Sr as an independent measure of the age of the galaxy. For both problems the capture cross sections of the two pure s-process nuclei /sup 86/Sr and /sup 87/Sr have to be known to an accuracy of 5% or better. The current investigation of the neutron capture cross sections for /sup 86/Sr and /sup 87/Sr was undertaken to extend recent measurements by Walter and Beer to energies below 3.5 keV, where strong resonances are known to exist, and to explore the discrepancy in the results of the Maxwellian averaged capture cross section of /sup 87/Sr at kT = 30 keV as reported by previous investigators. 9 refs., 1 fig.

Increasing Heavy Oil Reserves in the Wilmington Oil Field through Advanced Reservoir Characterization and Thermal Production Technologies

The objective of this project is to increase the recoverable heavy oil reserves within sections of the Wilmington Oil Field, near Long Beach, California. This is realized through the testing and application of advanced reservoir characterization and thermal production technologies. It is hoped that the successful application of these technologies will result in their implementation throughout the Wilmington Field and through technology transfer, will be extended to increase the recoverable oil reserves in other slope and basin clastic (SBC) reservoirs. The existing steamflood in the Tar zone of Fault Block (FB) II-A has been relatively insufficient because of several producability problems which are common in SBC reservoir; inadequate characterization of the heterogeneous turbidite sands, high permeability thief zones, low gravity oil and non-uniform distribution of the remaining oil. This has resulted in poor sweep efficiency, high steam-oil ratios, and early breakthrough. Operational problems related to steam breakthrough, high reservoir pressure, and unconsolidated sands have caused premature well and downhole equipment failures. In aggregate, these reservoir and operational constraints have resulted in increased operating costs and decreased recoverable reserves.

A Martensitic Reaction for Uranium

Hardness measurements of specimens quenched from the beta yields alpha phase at different cooling rates support the proposed martensitic beta yields alpha transformation for urnnium. Specimens held in 635 and 600 deg C isothermal baths prior to subsequent quenching to --5 deg C require more than 10 and two seconds, respectively before diffusion mechanlsms for beta yields alpha transformation commence. Once started, about 500 seconds are required to complete transformation by diffusion at these temperatures. Specimens quenched prior to tais hold time transform in part martensitically. Relationships are calculated for hardness as a function of grain size and cooling rate, and for grain size as a function of cooling rate. Metallographic examination confirms the hardness trends and reveals that widely varied grain structures can be produced by controlled cooling from the beta phase. Finally, a schematic time- temperature-transformation curve is sketched from the hardness data obtained. (auth)

Thermal distortion tests of aluminum and stainless steel plates

An important upgrade to the STAR detector at the Brookhaven National Laboratory RHIC accelerator will be an electromagnetic calorimeter. One design being considered for this calorimeter involves cast lead modules covering {Delta}{phi} = 6{degree} and 0 {le} {vert_bar}{eta}{vert_bar} {le} 1. These modules would consist of alternating layers of lead and sheets of plastic scintillator. The gaps for scintillator between the layers of lead would be created by parallel aluminum plates of thickness {approx_equal}6.6 mm = 0.260in. in the mold for the modules. These plates would need to be machined or ground to be reasonably flat, perhaps to {plus_minus}0.003in., and of uniform thickness from plate to plate. These requirements are imposed by the need to remove the plates from the casting after cooling, and to have good uniformity of the lead layer thickness, which gives good performance for the modules as a calorimeter. Aluminum was chosen for the plates because of its high coefficient of thermal expansion. An important cost in this calorimeter design is associated with the machining or grinding of the plates to proper thickness and flatness. Religious Persecution Abroad: Congressional Concerns and Actions

The 105 Congress has sought to raise the priority of combating religious persecution worldwide among U.S. foreign policy objectives. The difficulty has been in agreeing on legislation that would effectively deal with religious persecution without adversely affecting other important U.S. interests. On May 14, 1998, the House passed H.R. 2431 (the Freedom from Religious Persecution Act of 1998) establishing in the State Department a Director of the Office of Religious Persecution Monitoring who is to issue an annual report assessing religious persecution abroad. The legislation places sanctions on countries and groups that carry out or permit such activities. The Senate may soon consider S. 1868 establishing an office in the Department of State to monitor religious persecution headed by an Ambassador at Large and requiring the President to take some action from a broad list of options against countries found engaging in or tolerating religious persecution.

Risk reduction and the privatization option: First principles

The Department of Energy`s Office of Environmental Restoration and Waste Management (EM) faces a challenging mission. To increase efficiency, EM is undertaking a number of highly innovative initiatives--two of which are of particular importance to the present study. One is the 2006 Plan, a planning and budgeting process that seeks to convert the clean-up program from a temporally and fiscally open-ended endeavor to a strictly bounded one, with firm commitments over a decade-long horizon. The second is a major overhauling of the management and contracting practices that define the relationship between the Department and the private sector, aimed at cost reduction by increasing firms` responsibilities and profit opportunities and reducing DOE`s direct participation in management practices and decisions. The goal of this paper is to provide an independent perspective on how EM should create new management practices to deal with private sector partners that are motivated by financial incentives. It seeks to ground this perspective in real world concerns--the background of the clean-up effort, the very difficult technical challenges it faces, the very real threats to environment, health and safety that have now been juxtaposed with financial drivers, and the constraints imposed by government`s unique business practices and public responsibilities. …

The drag coefficients of axially symmetric diffusers operating at the maximum mass-flow rates were calculated from schileren photographs of the head shock waves and frictional drag considerations.
