Proposal for a direct numerical control system
This report describes a Direct Numerical Control (DNC) System proposed for use in the LLL Mechanical Shops. The DNC system includes a small digital computer that will provide the capability to store, manipulate, and distribute parts programs to the various machine tool stations. The system will also provide editing capabilities for parts program development and optimization. Diagnostic routines will be included to provide preventive maintenance. Logging of machine on'' time can be instituted to provide data for improved scheduling and machine tool usage. (auth)

SNAP 8 summary report
The SNAP 8 Program was directed toward the development of lightweight nuclear reactors which would operate in space for greater than 10,000 hr at a power level of 600 kW(t). Toward this objective, two reactors were designed, built, and successfully operated. The experimental reactor (S8ER) was an engineering test of a prototype core, but did not have flight-developed hardware. The developmental reactor (S8DR) was a nuclear system test to verify the operability of the integrated flight configuration. The development, design characteristics, operating experience, experimental results, and supporting tests for the S8ER and S8DR are discussed. 20 references. (auth)

Electrons at low altitudes: a difficult background problem for soft x-ray astronomy
Quasi-trapped and precipitating electrons have been observed with rocket- borne x-ray asironomy detectors in the altitude range 150 to 500 km. Because the flights occurred at low magnetic latitudes the electrons were unexpected. Data from many flights are combined to derive altitude dependence, an average electron spec, trum, and variation with solar activity. Development of electronrejecting collimators is discussed, and laboratory and flight data on these collimators are presented. (auth)
