Procedures for the Separation of Products Resulting From Bombardment of Heavy Elements

Technical report that attempts to bring together the various chemical procedures which proved most useful in studying the results of cyclotron bombardment or small scale neutron bombardments of heavy element targets. The report is limited to the elements of the "actinide", or second rare earth series, starting with thorium and including the newly discovered elements of atomic number 95 and 96. Every attempt is made to include all details necessary so this report can serve as a practical laboratory guide. The report covers separation problems, time factors, and dealing with dangerously radioactive targets.

Summary of Research on Experimental Refractory Bodies of High-Melting Nitrides, Carbides, and Uranium Dioxide (open access)

Summary of Research on Experimental Refractory Bodies of High-Melting Nitrides, Carbides, and Uranium Dioxide

Abstract: A procedure for the preparation of the nitrides and carbides of several metals and the preparation of the refractory bodies from them is described. The investigation shows that reasonably strong and dense bodies can be prepared from these materials as well as from UO₂. Evidence showing the tendency toward instability at high temperatures of Be₃N₂, TaN, and ThN is presented. Evidence is also given indicating that the hexagonal structure reported by others for TaN is actually that for Ta₂N. A lattice for Th₂N₃ is proposed. The melting points of ThN, UN, and UC are determined to be 2630 ± 50°C,2650 ± 100°C, and 2590 ± 50°C respectively.

The Application of Tracer Techniques to the Determination of Uranium Extraction Coefficients (open access)

The Application of Tracer Techniques to the Determination of Uranium Extraction Coefficients

Abstract: This report deals with the development of a method using tracer technique for determining uranium extraction coefficients on solutions of low uranium concentration. It was found that extraction coefficients could be determined on systems containing as low as one part per million uranium using 1900 level uranium as the tracer. Results of several extraction series are presented in which aluminum nitrate is used as the salting agent and dibutyl carbitol the organic extractant.

The Metabolism of Thorium, Protoactinium, and Neptunium in the Rat

From abstract: "The distribution of carrier-free thorium, protoactinium and neptunium in the rat following intramuscular and oral administration has been studied. The Determination of Thorium in Uranium-Thorium Alloys, Using Cupferron (open access)

The Determination of Thorium in Uranium-Thorium Alloys, Using Cupferron

Technical report describing that the use of controlled amounts of carbonate, acting both as complexing agent buffer led to a fairly satisfactory procedure for the determination of Th in Th-U alloys, using cupferron. The alloy, dissolved in NHO2, in the presence of HF, is treated with H2SO4 and the mixture is evaporated in SO2 fumes. The solution is diluted and (NH4)2CO2 is added. Th is precipitated from this solution with cupferron. The precipitate is weighed as ThO2 after ignition. An accuracy of 6% was obtained. A method was developed specifically for the determination of Th in U-Th alloys containing 1 to 10% Th. An ion exchange resin in column is used to separate Th from U, with NH2OH-HCl as complexing agent. The Th is then precipitated, ignited, and weighed in the conventional manner.
