From introduction: This report describes the program of research on mineralogy and petrography of certain uraniferous vein deposits in the Boulder batholith of western Montana.

From introduction: A subsurface exploration program was undertaken to investigate the concentration of uranium and vanadium in or near the base of the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation in the Flatirons locality, and to develop criteria whereby adjacent unexplored areas could be evaluated as to potential production capacity from study of geological and mineralogical features at the host rook outcrop. An earlier study of the area by C. G. Evensen of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission had shown that geological conditions favorable to the accumulation of commercial uranium deposits were present in the Flatirons area.

Abstract: The Trans-Pecos region of southwest Texas is noted for the production of quicksilver, lead, silver, and copper from its several mining districts. Reconnaissance, which was concentrated in and around these districts, revealed many areas of slightly abnormal radioactivity. Only a few areas, however, showed uranium mineralization.

Cost estimates for two types of Th producing plants are offered. One utilizes Th(NO3)4 as raw material, the other uses monazite sand. Final processing schemes and plant designs are not fixed, so the estimates represent maximum costs. Recommendations for research and development of Th producing methods are given.

Abstract. a method of recovering thorium from slag from the bomb process of producing thorium has been developed. HCl and NaOH are the only chemicals required in quantity. Materials required for a representative slag are given.

Technical report that attempts to bring together the various chemical procedures which proved most useful in studying the results of cyclotron bombardment or small scale neutron bombardments of heavy element targets. The report is limited to the elements of the "actinide", or second rare earth series, starting with thorium and including the newly discovered elements of atomic number 95 and 96. Every attempt is made to include all details necessary so this report can serve as a practical laboratory guide. The report covers separation problems, time factors, and dealing with dangerously radioactive targets.

From abstract: This investigation was conducted in order to develop a process whereby the most abundant zirconium ore, namely zircon, could economically be put into solution and purified adequately for use in hafnium separation processes employing liquid-liquid extraction. The following report uses empirical relations and the elementary diffusion theory transformation, the EDIT, to predict some of the minimum critical values of the various parameters of interest with reasonable accuracy. This document reports the minimal critical mass, volume, and cylinder diameter for uranium of 4.9% assay.

Abstract: "The effect of variation in fuel element density upon f, p in a D2O cooled and moderated lattice of cylindrical fuel elements is investigated. The CP-3 lattice is chosen as a reference. The effect of a source term in the fuel element is considered. f, p are calculated as functions of "a", the ratio of the modified fuel element density to the original (fuel only) density. Curves showing f(a), p(a) are included. It is concluded that a 1 per cent decrease in the product, f(d), p(a) is not suffered until a=0.3. A 5 per cent decrease in k is estimated at a-0.4. The necessity of introducing the fuel element source term into the calculation after a has been decreased to about 0.6 is brought out."

Abstract: This report deals with the development of a method using tracer technique for determining uranium extraction coefficients on solutions of low uranium concentration. It was found that extraction coefficients could be determined on systems containing as low as one part per million uranium using 1900 level uranium as the tracer. Results of several extraction series are presented in which aluminum nitrate is used as the salting agent and dibutyl carbitol the organic extractant.
