The solvent extraction of thorium by the chelating agent, thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA), has proved to be a very effective tool for studying the complex ion chemistry of thorium. This study led to the establishment of the existence of aqueous complexation by the chelating agent.

Abstract: A procedure for the preparation of the nitrides and carbides of several metals and the preparation of the refractory bodies from them is described. The investigation shows that reasonably strong and dense bodies can be prepared from these materials as well as from UO₂. Evidence showing the tendency toward instability at high temperatures of Be₃N₂, TaN, and ThN is presented. Evidence is also given indicating that the hexagonal structure reported by others for TaN is actually that for Ta₂N. A lattice for Th₂N₃ is proposed. The melting points of ThN, UN, and UC are determined to be 2630 ± 50°C,2650 ± 100°C, and 2590 ± 50°C respectively.

Abstract: "The effect of variation in fuel element density upon f, p in a D2O cooled and moderated lattice of cylindrical fuel elements is investigated. The CP-3 lattice is chosen as a reference. The effect of a source term in the fuel element is considered. f, p are calculated as functions of "a", the ratio of the modified fuel element density to the original (fuel only) density. Curves showing f(a), p(a) are included. It is concluded that a 1 per cent decrease in the product, f(d), p(a) is not suffered until a=0.3. A 5 per cent decrease in k is estimated at a-0.4. The necessity of introducing the fuel element source term into the calculation after a has been decreased to about 0.6 is brought out."

The corrosion resistance of four types of austenitic stainless steels to Purex process first and second acid concentrator bottoms was determined. Although the compositions of the two solutions were very similar, tests in simulated solutions of both compositions were conducted to strengthen the basis for the conclusions which were to be made.

Evaluation of transport cross sections by means of replacement measurements in Godiva is illustrated for the several elements carbon, copper, and gold, the values relative to ~!&(OY) = 1 being ~fi(c) = ().43 f 0.02, ~(CU) = 6.5!5 * 0.02} ~ti(Au) = 0.91 f 0.02.

"The PRTR Pressured Gas-Cooled Loop Facility, or Gas Loop, is an experimental facility to be installed in the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor for use in studies contributing to advancement of the technology of gas-cooled reactors. The facility will provide an in-reactor loop for studying phenomena occurring under conditions likely to exist in gas-cooled reactors.

Absolute differential cross sections for the reaction p + p - w+ + d were obtained by detecting meson-deuteron coincidences produced by passing the 340-Mev external proton beam of the Berkeley synchro-cyclotron through a liquid hydrogen target.

The angular distribution of charged x mesons produced by 300 <x> 30 Mev neutrons on C12 and Be9 have been studied. An analysis of the kinematics for meson production in a nucleon-nucleon collision indicates a fairly well defined center-of-mass system.
