Reconnaissance in the Western Part of the Trans-Pecos Region of Texas (open access)

Reconnaissance in the Western Part of the Trans-Pecos Region of Texas

Abstract: The Trans-Pecos region of southwest Texas is noted for the production of quicksilver, lead, silver, and copper from its several mining districts. Reconnaissance, which was concentrated in and around these districts, revealed many areas of slightly abnormal radioactivity. Only a few areas, however, showed uranium mineralization.

The Application of Tracer Techniques to the Determination of Uranium Extraction Coefficients (open access)

The Application of Tracer Techniques to the Determination of Uranium Extraction Coefficients

Abstract: This report deals with the development of a method using tracer technique for determining uranium extraction coefficients on solutions of low uranium concentration. It was found that extraction coefficients could be determined on systems containing as low as one part per million uranium using 1900 level uranium as the tracer. Results of several extraction series are presented in which aluminum nitrate is used as the salting agent and dibutyl carbitol the organic extractant.

IBM 1401 Computer Produced and Maintained Library Circulation Records

Report issued by the University of California Lawrence Radiation Laboratory discussing a method of updating library circulation records on an IBM 1401 computer. The report describes the methods of generating and updating the records using transaction cards to create computer tapes that are sorted and updated to prepare current reports of circulation information.

Investigation of 17-4 PH Steel Components Used in SM-1, SM-1A, PM-2A Reactor Plants (open access)

Investigation of 17-4 PH Steel Components Used in SM-1, SM-1A, PM-2A Reactor Plants

Abstract: This technical report covers the investigation of 17-4 PH steel components used in the SM-1, SM-1A and PM-2A nuclear power plants, which consist of control rod drive racks, pinions, seal shafts and associated parts. Evidence supporting the continued use of 17-4 PH steel in these applications is presented. Alco's current procurement and processing specifications for 17-4 PH steel are included. The evidence presented is in the form of stress calculations, test and environmental data and the results of non-destructive and destructive metallographic analyses.

Transit Times of Compression Sound Waves Through Aluminum Plate

Experiments are described which show that the velocity of compressional waves along a thin plate varies as a function of the frequency of the waves. In terms of transit times in aluminum the value is between 4.02 and 4.94 microseconds per inch.

The general expression for the angular correlation between radiations produced in successive cascade transitions is derived by use of Racah algebra. The result is then specialized to the beta - gamma correlation and applied to two cases in which additional properties of the photon are specified, the circular polarization and the plane polarization. The prospect of testing time reversal and determining nuclear matrix element ratios by beta - gamma correlation measurements is explored using the nuclide Tm/sup 170/ as an example. The directional angular correlation between the 2.31-Mev beta and the subsequent 0.605-Mev gamma emitted in the decay of Sb/sup 124/ was measured as a function of the beta energy. The K-conversion coefficient of the 279-kev gamma following beta decay of Hg/sup 203/ was measured by comparing the x-ray and gamma intensities in a scintillation spectrometer. The measured valve of alpha /sub k/ = 0.195 plus or minus 0.014 indicates that the transition is M1 with E2 mixed to the extent of 63%. The angular correlation of the 107-1.24 Mev gamma cascade in Zn/sup 68/ following the decay of 68-min Ga/sup 68/ is shown. The Legendre polynomial expansion coefficients were deter-gular correlation in the decay of Sb/ sup 118/ was …
