100-K Area electrical power system load and voltage study for project CG-775. Revision

The proposed increased water capacity for 100-K plants will increase the electrical load to be supplied. The load study showed that the capacity of the existing 13.8 kV system is adequate to carry the increased loads proposed for Project CG-775, while for the 5 kV system, an expanded power system is proposed. Likewise, the voltage regulation on the kV system bus will be excessive, and voltage regulators should be added.

333 Building preliminary survey potential equipment improvements (open access)

333 Building preliminary survey potential equipment improvements

In order to provide advance direction for 333 Building equipment development work, a survey of potential areas of significant savings through equipment improvement has been made. The purpose of this report is only to indicate areas for investigation, not to define a program. Equipment is adequate to maintain operating continuity and provide for safe operation of the building. Special attention should be given to ``one-of-a-kind`` pieces of equipment. These include the press, cutoff saw, beta heat treat facility and autoradiograph film developer. Manpower savings will result principally from refinement of each operation. There are no really outstanding areas for improvement. The greatest potential for savings is in material costs. These are illustrated in Tables I&IV. Maintenance costs provide for possible significant reductions at braze, vacu-blast, nondestructive test, autoclaves, and chemical processing equipment.

Acceleration of Polarized Protons to Relativistic Energies (open access)

Acceleration of Polarized Protons to Relativistic Energies

Maintenance of poiarization of polarized protons in a linear accelerator is known to be feasible. Circular accelerators present a different problem, and the investigation of the interaction of orbit dynamics and particle polarization in general is undertaken. The equation of motion of the spin vector of a charged particle in a magnetic field as formulated by Bargman, Michel, and Telegdi is utilized in the study of depolarization for several accelerators. High values of depoiarization are obtained, and means for avoiding such depolarization are suggested. (D.C.W.)

Adjustment of total control parameters for C Reactor (open access)

Adjustment of total control parameters for C Reactor

The three alterations discussed in this report have an effect on the parameters used in Total Control Calculations for C Reactor: Conversion to smaller diameter and shorter vertical safety rods in six outer control channels; installation of forty-four overbored tubes with short fuel charges in the flat zone and an associated increase in spike enrichment; and centralization of the enrichment ring into a three-lattice unit width in place of three and one-half lattice units previously in use. New parameters are derived in this document for future total control calculations.

AEC Group Shelter (open access)

AEC Group Shelter

As a result of atomic shelter tests and field experiments condueted over the past nine years, it has been conclusively shown that shelters provide the only promising means of civilian protection in the event of a nuclear war. Design details are presented for a group shelter to accommodate 100 persons of all age groups and both sexes. The shelter structure is a multiplate corrugated- steel arch set on a concrete slab with end walls of bridge plate sheathing. The entire structure is covered with a minimum of 3 feet of earth. The shelter combines outstanding protection against radioactive fall-out with good protection against blast and thermal radiation. Drawings are included. General operating procedures are outlined. Analysis and evaluation of the N Reactor Zone Temperature Monitoring System (open access)

Analysis and evaluation of the N Reactor Zone Temperature Monitoring System

This document reports the result of an engineering analysis and evaluation of the Zone Temperature Monitoring System. The main function of the system is to protect the reactor from localized increases in reactor power which would be reflected by increases in the tube outlet temperatures in the affected zones of the reactor. This function has been implemented by the installation of immersion temperature detectors on 109 representative process tubes. The signals from the detectors will be monitored and will automatically annunciate, initiate a power setback, or initiate a reactor scram should the outlet temperature of one, two, or three tubes exceed an adjustable, preset limit.

Apparatus for the Study of Fission-Gas Release From Fuels During Postirradiation Heating at Temperatures Up to 1600 C (open access)

Apparatus for the Study of Fission-Gas Release From Fuels During Postirradiation Heating at Temperatures Up to 1600 C

An apparatus to study rare-gas fission-product release from nuclear fuel materials during postirradiation heating was developed. Xenon and krypton fission gases escaping from a small specimen during heating at constant temperature are measured using a continuous radioactivity monitor and charcoal adsorption traps. The rhodium-wound furnace is capable of operation at 1600 deg C. Helium carrier gas is purified by activated alumina, copper, and zirconium traps, and the oxygen and moisture contents of the gas are monitored continuously. The operating procedure and data are presented for a typical heating experiment in which fused uranium dioxide was studied. (auth)

B and D downcomer prototype data

Available pressure data on the B and D downcomers and approach piping is tabulated herein. All readings were taken with an air bubbler system; readings given in psi were taken on a Bourdon-type pressure-vacuum gauge, readings given in inches of water were read on an oil-filled manometer. In each case, fluctuations occurred and the mean value was estimated by eye. Data are presented as a function of flow rate and temperature.

Beam Separators for Bev Particles (open access)

Beam Separators for Bev Particles

The problem of separation of beams of particles of different masses but of the same momentum at Bev energies is the subject of a great deal of study at several high energy laboratories. In this note we shall describe the problem and tabulate a few of the cogent parameters. Frequently the student of high energy interactions is faced with a beam of miscellaneous particles coming from an accelerator. By standard techniques this beam can be rendered approximately parallel and an inch or so in diameter. By passage through a magnetic field the beam can be analyzed in momentum. Now it frequently happens that the particles in which the experimenter is particularly interested make up only a small fraction of the beam and the exigencies of the proposed experiment may well demand that the background of undesired particles be drastically reduced. The problem is difficult because the velocities of the various particles are almost equal to each other and to the velocity of lights; this makes time-of-flight techniques relatively ineffective. The energies of the particles are almost equal so electrostatic separation also is difficult. Since the beam is already analyzed in momentum, further separation by magnetic means is impossible.

A Calculation of the Beta Energy Absorbed by Tritiated Gases in Spherical Vessels (open access)

A Calculation of the Beta Energy Absorbed by Tritiated Gases in Spherical Vessels

A calculation of tritium beta energy absorption in spherical bulbs filled with mixtures of tritium and other gases is ' carried out under the empirically substantiated assumption that the energy absorption per spherical shell surrounding a point tritium source is representable by a pure exponential function. Primary and successive backscattering at the wall of the vessel is taken into account by means of a very approximate calculation. The computed energy absorption function for hydrogen gas in a silvered bulb agrees within plus or minus 3% over a wide range of gas pressure with the one available set of spherical ionization chamber data.
