Advisement that their Civilian Defense program will be enlarged, their Rehabilitation program will function; that they are preparing to take in their own sons.

A form letter addressed to all the members of the Executive Committee of the American Legion, from Sam D. Forman, Jr, Raymond Gray, Walter Wolff, Henry Love and Jim Willson, dated October 22, 1942. Minutes from the membership committee meeting which met for the purpose of working out plans for a concerted membership drive. An outline of the details regarding the membership drive is concluded with a wartime pitch, "Now is your chance to receive a commission without Political pull. We have a job to do; the American Legion stands first, for God and Country, and we must stand strongly, for those principles for which we fought in 1917-1918".

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Parramore Post 57, The American Legion, Abilene, Texas from H. C. Gilliland, Cleveland, Mississippi dated December 22, 1941. Gilliland explains that he read the article written by Edward Meeman in which was answered the question regarding Americanism, and though Carswell did not address his inquiry "What is Americanism?" to him, he could not resist this opportunity to reply. The envelope into which the letter was placed is also included in the record.

A letter addressed to Detachment Commander, Medical Officer, S-2, S-4 from John H. Alvis, First Lieutenant, Infantry, S-3, Tenth Battalion, T.D.G., by authority of Maj. T. N. Carswell, Commander, dated December 22, 1941. Alvis confirms that the Training Schedule for the Headquarters Detachment is the same basic training as for the Rifle Company except that it includes an additional specialized training under the supervision of the medical officers, S-2 and S-4.

A letter written to Legionnaire T. N. Carswell, Fifth Division Commander, The American Legion, from Harry E. Rather, Department Adjutant, Austin, Texas, dated October 22, 1942. Rather expresses his appreciation for the letter from Carswell in which he wished him success in his new responsibility and assures Carswell of his comprehension of the big job ahead. He confirms the supplies requested by Carswell are being sent under separate cover.

A letter addressed to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from J. D. Sandefer, Jr., Chairman, Board of Trustees of Hardin-Simmons University, Breckenridge, Texas dated March 22, 1945. Sandefer announces a meeting of the Board of Trustees of Hardin-Simmons University to be held on March 29 advising of a report to be made by Raymond Foy regarding the search for a president and a report by O. D. Dillingham regarding a campus plot on the future development of the University. Sandefer advises that due to travel restrictions this meeting might take the place of the annual meeting held each year in June. Sandefer requests that Carswell reply by mail stating that he will be present.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from J. D. Sandefer, Jr., Breckenridge, Texas dated November 22, 1944. Sandefer expresses his appreciation for the letter from Carswell and for his thoughts. He expresses his regret that Carswell was not at the meeting and requests his suggestions for the campaign.

A letter written to Mr. Carswell from Mabel Davidson, Lynchburg, Virginia, dated January 22, 1942. Davidson advises of her opinion regarding the real reason for Peggy Anne's discouragement. She describes a very, undesirable roommate and offers options for the situation to be remedied.

A letter written to Major T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Arthur B. Knickerbocker, Major, Inf., Commanding 34th Battalion, Texas Defense Guard, Odessa, Texas, dated May 22, 1941. Knickerbocker finalizes the inspection dates. Carswell handwrites notation that he wrote to Knickerbocker on May 13, 1941 to inquire if transportation is to be provided to McCamey.

A letter addressed to The Chairman, Board of Appeals No. 2, San Antonio, Texas, from Fred Upchurch, Major, J. A. G. D., Division of Appeals, Aliens and Delinquents, State Headquarters for Selective Service, Austin, Texas dated December 22, 1943. Upchurch advises the Chairman of the classification of a registrant by the Board as a 1-A but after having reviewed the file recommends reclassification as a III-D.

A letter written to Major C.A. Dawson, 17th Battalion, Texas Defense Guard, Throckmorton, Texas, from T. N. Carswell, Major, 10th Battalion, Texas Defense Guard, dated April 22, 1941. Carswell replies to a letter from Dawson and advises of the local Guard's intention to use the full uniform for officers. He provides examples of how the items that are needed to complete a uniform can be purchased frugally.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Milt Phillips, Department Adjutant, The American Legion, Department of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, dated May 22, 1942. Phillips advises that he was given an assurance from Fred Young that Carswell would provide information on the standing of J. W. Reid as a lawyer, that he accepted a fee to secure a divorce for a soldier, the son of a splendid legionnaire, but an allottment made to the girl and was later cancelled has not yet been stopped.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from R. H. Johnson, R. H. Johnson & Co. Investment Securities, New York 5, N. Y., dated January 22, 1946. Johnson expresses his regrets in not seeing Carswell when he was in Abilene. He advises that they are glad to have his account and that he is interested, indeed, in the new Abilene bonds and other loans, and requests any help Carswell can give to them towards securing this issue.

Johnson expresses his appreciation for the nice letter but with a reminder that he is not infallible in regard to buying and selling securities then discusses the market and advises regarding purchases. A letter written to T. N. Carswell from Raymond W. Foy dated November 22, 1948. Foy advises Carswell that the organization of the Hardin-Simmons University Ex-Students Association looks like a step in the right direction. This correspondence is typewritten at the top left of the page of the letter sent to The Executive Committee, Ex-Students Association and HSU regarding the proposal to establish the HSU Ex-Students Association as a permanent unit and to create a Planning Commission.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Pat Bullock, The Senate of The State of Texas, Austin, dated January 22, 1945. Bullock advises Carswell that his opinions concerning the "University fuss" are the same as his and then discloses his opinion regarding the dismissal of the president of the University of Texas.

Vernon, Clerical Audit Supervisors, Mirando City, Texas, dated October 22, 1943. Carswell replies to the letter of October 18, 1943 from the Board which was written to L. M. Fellbaum regarding classification forms.
