Phillips advises that he was given an assurance from Fred Young that Carswell would provide information on the standing of J. W. Reid as a lawyer, that he accepted a fee to secure a divorce for a soldier, the son of a splendid legionnaire, but an allottment made to the girl and was later cancelled has not yet been stopped.

A letter written to Legionnaire T. N. Carswell, Fifth Division Commander, The American Legion, from Harry E. Rather, Department Adjutant, Austin, Texas, dated October 22, 1942. Rather expresses his appreciation for the letter from Carswell in which he wished him success in his new responsibility and assures Carswell of his comprehension of the big job ahead. He confirms the supplies requested by Carswell are being sent under separate cover.

Pep talk regarding the extra work required as leader due to the war. A request that the Posts assist the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine in their recruiting program. Advisement that their Civilian Defense program will be enlarged, their Rehabilitation program will function; that they are preparing to take in their own sons.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Wyatt W. Lipscomb, Albany, Texas, dated November 22, 1942. Lipscomb advises of the enclosed clipping from one of their two local newspapers of an article written by himself relative to the proper consideration of Armistice. He complains that the other newspaper destroyed the intent of the article by leaving out the last paragraph. Lipscomb extends an invitation to Carswell and to his wife to attend an event to be held at their Legion Hall adding that he hopes his gasoline will not be too limited for the trip. A letter written to Mr. Carswell from Mabel Davidson, Lynchburg, Virginia, dated January 22, 1942. Davidson advises of her opinion regarding the real reason for Peggy Anne's discouragement. She describes a very, undesirable roommate and offers options for the situation to be remedied.

A letter written to Mr. Jennings Monk, District Commander, American Legion, Kerrville, Texas, from T. N. Carswell, Commander, Fifth Division, American Legion, dated October 22, 1942. Carswell requests from Monk the names of men to serve on two committees and notes, in a postscript, that he has yet to receive the name of Monk's District Membership Chairman.

Minutes from the membership committee meeting which met for the purpose of working out plans for a concerted membership drive. An outline of the details regarding the membership drive is concluded with a wartime pitch, "Now is your chance to receive a commission without Political pull. We have a job to do; the American Legion stands first, for God and Country, and we must stand strongly, for those principles for which we fought in 1917-1918".
