Klystron voltage pulse timing experiment

SLAC has always operated with the voltage pulse applied to each klystron having a flat-top at least 2.5 ..mu..s long. In this region, the voltage is held constant to +-0.5%, limiting the klystron contribution to beam energy spectrum broadening caused by phase and amplitude modulation of the rf wave travelling along the accelerator sections. Since the section filling time is 0.83 ..mu..s and the maximum beam pulse length is 1.6 ..mu..s, a minimum flat-top duration of 2.43 ..mu..s is required, which when rounded up to 2.5 ..mu..s allows for some timing error. The advent of single-bunch beam opertions for SLC, coupled with the use of the SLED pulse compression system (which produces an rf output to the accelerator which changes drastically in one section filling time) and the rapidly rising cost of electrical power experienced in recent years, have made it desirable to review the specifications of the voltage pulse supplied by the modulator to the klystron. Neglecting the possibilities of increasing modulator efficency, which are being studied by others, one can ask whether some use can be made of the energy contained in the skirts of the voltage pulse on each side of the flat top region. Diallyl Phthalate Prepolymer Characterization and Testing in Fiberglass Filled Molding Compounds

A program was undertaken to identify an acceptable alternative to Dapon 35, an o-diallyl phthalate (DAP) prepolymer no longer available. Three o-DAP prepolymers from the Osaka Soda Company and four laboratory-scale prepolymers from Bendix-Kansas city were characterized and evaluated in DAP-fiberglass molding compounds. Gel permeation chromatography results for the Osaka prepolymers showed all three to be very close to one another in molecular weights (mw) and mw distributions, but slightly lower in both than Dapon 35. They are also slightly higher in monomer content. All three processed readily into DAP-fiberglass molding compounds and passed required physical property tests. One Osaka prepolymer was compounded into both asbestos and Orlon-DAP compounds on a production scale. Both compounds have passed all certification tests. The Bendix prepolymers were deliberately varied in mw and mw distribution and higher in monomer content than Dapon 35. Processing difficulties were encountered with both the lowest and highest molecular weight compounds, and the lowest molecular weight compound failed a number of physical property tests. Waste water heat recovery appliance. Final report

An efficient convective waste heat recovery heat exchanger was designed and tested. The prototype appliance was designed for use in laundromats and other small commercial operations which use large amounts of hot water. Information on general characteristics of the coin-op laundry business, energy use in laundromats, energy saving resources already in use, and the potential market for energy saving devices in laundromats was collected through a literature search and interviews with local laundromat operators in Fort Collins, Colorado. A brief survey of time-use patterns in two local laundromats was conducted. The results were used, with additional information from interviews with owners, as the basis for the statistical model developed. Mathematical models for the advanced and conventional types were developed and the resulting computer program listed. Computer simulations were made using a variety of parameters; for example, different load profiles, hold-up volumes, wall resistances, and wall areas. The computer simulation results are discussed with regard to the overall conclusions. Various materials were explored for use in fabricating the appliance. Resistance to corrosion, workability, and overall suitability for laundromat installations were considered for each material.

Hadron-hadron colliders

The objective is to investigate whether existing technology might be extrapolated to provide the conceptual framework for a major hadron-hadron collider facility for high energy physics experimentation for the remainder of this century. One contribution to this large effort is to formalize the methods and mathematical tools necessary. In this report, the main purpose is to introduce the student to basic design procedures. From these follow the fundamental characteristics of the facility: its performance capability, its size, and the nature and operating requirements on the accelerator components, and with this knowledge, we can determine the technology and resources needed to build the new facility.

The project being reported is to contribute to an understanding of the economic and behavioral processes that take place within a firm, and without it. Three main topics are treated. One is the representation of the characteristics of the members of an organization, to the extent to which characteristics seem pertinent to the processes of interest. The second is the appropriate management of the processes of change by an organization. The third deals with the competitive striving towards an economic equilibrium among the members of a society in the large, on the theory that this process might be modeled in a way which is similar to the one for the intra-organizational ones. This volume covers mainly the first topic.

Magnetic-field considerations in superferric dipole

Iron dominated magnets are characterized in the limit of infinite permeability by a pole shape that is a magnetic equipotential. Deviations from this ideal because of finite permeability are associated with differences in path length, local saturation, flux concentration in slotted pole if crenellation is used, and sub surface voids. For moderate field levels the variation in flux path length throughout the iron lowers the magnetic potential on the iron surface more for the longer paths. As the excitation increases the permeability is lowered in regions of high flux density. Crenellation in this region offers some degree of control over the permeability by concentrating the flux. To a lesser degree sub surface voids can be used to control the reluctance of a flux path. The net result suggests that the shape of the effective air gap can be adjusted to be a magnetic equipotential sensibly equivalent to the ideal pole shape for infinite permeability.

Potential 20-TeV site in Illinois - Dekalb

The Batavia, Illinois location has all the necessary requirements for a major high energy physics laboratory, i.e., near a major airport and road system, many good universities within driving distance, a large pool of technical people in the area, all types of industry nearby, and centrally located. Even with these characteristics usually associated with urban areas, there also exists nearby open land where perhaps a 20 TeV collider could be located. Preliminary studies are being made of potential sites in Illinois for a 20 TeV collider. The largest ring that has been looked at has a 25 kilometer radius (30 mile diameter). This was picked since the lowest magnetic field (3 Tesla) would give 20 TeV and smaller rings should be easier to accommodate. The motivation for the siting of this ring was to find a location near Fermilab so that the infrastructure could be used including the Energy Doubler as an injector. One ring considered went through Fermilab and out toward the west. The obvious advantage of this ring would be to have the experimental areas on the Fermilab site. The difficulty with this ring is that it must be quite deep to pass under the Fox river twice. …

Review of MFTF yin-yang magnet displacement and magnetic field measurements and calculations

During the recent testing of the MFTF yin-yang magnet, measurements of coil position, structural case strain, and magnetic field were made to verify calculated values. Measurements to detect magnet movement were taken throughout cooldown and during the operation of the magnet. The magnetic field at the mirror points was measured by Hall-effect probes. The magnet position, structural case strain, and magnetic field measurements indicated a reasonably close correlation with calculated values. Information obtained from the yin-yang test has been very useful in setting realistic mechanical alignment values for the new MFTF-B magnet system.

Mirror fusion vacuum technology developments (open access)

Mirror fusion vacuum technology developments

Magnetic Mirror Fusion experiments, such as MFTF-B+T (Mirror Fusion Test Facility-B, Tritium Upgrade) and foreseeable follow-on devices, have operational and maintenance requirements that have not yet been fully demonstrated. Among those associated with vacuum technology are the very-high continuous-pumping speeds, 10/sup 7/ to 10/sup 8/ l/s for D/sub 2/, T/sub 2/ and, to a lesser extent, He; the early detection of water leaks from the very-high heat-flux neutral-beam dumps and the detection and location of leaks in the superconducting magnets not protected by guard vacuums. Possible solutions to these problems have been identified and considerable progress has been made toward successfully demonstrating their feasibility.

Comparisons of hydrodynamic beam models with kinetic treatments. Revision 1

Hydrodynamic models have been derived by Mark and Yu and by others to described energetic self-pinch beams, such as those used in ion-beam fusion. The closure of the Mark-Yu model is obtained with adiabatic assumptions mathematically analogous to those of Chew, Goldberger, and Low for MHD. The other models treated here use an ideal gas closure and a closure by Newcomb based on an expansion in V/sub th//V/sub z/. Features of these hydrodynamic beam models are compared with a kinetic treatment.

A fast beam damper system is currently being built for the Tevatron. The system is similar to the Super Damper system in the main ring with increased bandwidth and a pulsed high power mode for injection errors. The purpose of this writeup is to describe the basics of the system, and some of the reasoning behind its design. Calculations of expected performance are also included.

Aluminum and polymeric coatings for protection of uranium

Ion-plated aluminum films on uranium will not provide adequate protection for 25 years. Magnetron-plated aluminum films on uranium are much better than ion-plated ones. Kel-F 800 films on uranium can provide adequate protection for 25 years. Their use in production must be delayed until the following factors are sorted out: water permeability in Kel-F 800 must be determined between 30 and 60/sup 0/C; the effect of UF/sub 3/, at the Kel-F/metal interface, on the permeability of water must be assessed; and the effect of crystallinity on water permeability must be evaluated. Applying Kel-F films on aluminum ion-plated uranium provides a good interim solution for long term storage.

The overall objective of the Westinghouse coal gasification program is to demonstrate the viability of the Westinghouse pressurized, fluidized bed, gasification system for the production of medium-Btu fuel gas for syngas, electrical power generation, chemical feedstocks, or industrial fuels and to obtain performance and scaleup data for the process and hardware. Investigation of the Pathway of Contaminated Soil Transported to Plant Surfaces by Raindrop Splash

The environmental transport pathway of soil-borne radioisotopes to vegetation surfaces via raindrop splash was studied. The data show that soil can significantly contribute to the contamination found on plants. Further detailed study is needed to calculate the rate constant for the raindrop splash and retention pathways. 8 references, 1 figure. (ACR)
