Hazards summary report: Projects CG-558 and CG-600 reactor plant modifications. Volume 1 (open access)

Hazards summary report: Projects CG-558 and CG-600 reactor plant modifications. Volume 1

It is believed that the overall safety of reactor operation will be improved upon completion of projects CG-558, 600, even at the higher power levels anticipated. Installation of sub-critical monitoring instruments concurrent with these projects is a factor in this conclusion. Higher power levels will not of themselves increase the probability of a disaster initiating event; however, higher power levels will reduce the time available for remedial action and will increase the severity of the consequences of a disaster. Loss of process cooling water will precede or accompany a reactor disaster. A reactor containing a normal inventory of fission products will surely be destroyed, with release of some fission products, if cooling water is lost at operational power levels or within hours after shutting down the reactor from operational levels. A power excursion along with the water loss, unless causing a puff release of fission product, will only hasten the destruction. A power excursion not caused by loss of cooling water is possible, but appears to be of almost negligibly small probability. Such an excursion will not become disastrous unless a significant fraction of the cooling water is boiled out of the reactor. The scope of projects CG-558 and CG-600, …

Metallographic Examination of Cambridge Nos. 1 and 2 Metallography Report No. 267 (open access)

Metallographic Examination of Cambridge Nos. 1 and 2 Metallography Report No. 267

The radiators designated Cambridge #1 and #2 were visually examined and modified before operation. The initial examination revealed poor quality braze joints at the top and bottom plates of Cambridge #1. However, the same plates of Cambridge #2 were adequately brazed. The copper core of the fins was exposed in many of the tube-to-fin joints on both radiators, indicating that the braze material had not covered the fin collars. Samples were removed from each radiator and examined for evidence of mass transfer. Samples were also removed from the air inlet and outlet banks of both radiators and examined for fin-to-tube integrity.

Life of HRE-3 Core Tanks (open access)

Life of HRE-3 Core Tanks

ABS>Calculations have been made of the expected life of Zircaloy core tanks in the HRE-3 assuming 5 w/ml power density in the tank, considering possible cooling systems. If the inner surface film coefficient is l000 Btu/hr ft/sup 2/ deg F or better, a thick single-walled tank appears optimum. If the inner surface coefficient is only about 100, cooling of the core tank with either D20 or ThO/sub 2/ slurry appears desirable or even necessary. (auth)

THE EFFECT OF EPINEPHRINE ON SERUM LIPOPROTEINS

Epinephrine injection has been shown to produce a two and three fold increase of the higher Sf classes of serum lipoproteins in the rabbit. The previously observed elevation of serum lipids was confirmed. The hyperlipoproteinemia following epinephrine injection appears about the same time as in certain conditions of stress. (auth)

DAREX PROCESS: BATCH DISSOLUTION AND CHLORIDE REMOVAL STEPS FOR YANKEE ATOMIC FUEL (open access)

DAREX PROCESS: BATCH DISSOLUTION AND CHLORIDE REMOVAL STEPS FOR YANKEE ATOMIC FUEL

In laboratory scale experiments dilution of a Darex dissolver product from the integral dissolution of Yankee Atomic fuel specimens with at least an equal volume of 15.8M HNO/sub 3/, followed by distillation, produced a solvent extraction feed containing less than 50 ppm of chloride. Properly designed chloride stripping and nitric acid rectification columns are capable of conserving acids for recycle to the dissolver and chloride removal still. In initial experiments about 87% of the nitric acid and 36% of the hydrochloric acid were recovered. (auth)
