Report discussing an investigation into several types and sizes of flaps and spoilers located forward of the elevators on the upper surface of the horizontal stabilizer of a model of a radial-engine pursuit airplane. Information about the elevator characteristics, elevator-fixed and elevator-free balance lift coefficient, and trim drag coefficient for a range of Mach numbers is provided.

"The theory of the hydraulic analogy -- that is, the analogy between water flow with a free surface and two-dimensional compressible gas flow -- and the limitations and conditions of the analogy are discussed. A test was run using the hydraulic analogy as applied to the flow about circular cylinders of various diameters at subsonic velocities extending into the supercritical range. The apparatus and techniques used in this application are described and criticized" (p. 311).

"A flight investigation was made to determine the effect of various vertical-tail modifications and of some combinations of these modifications on the directional stability and control characteristics of a propeller-driven fighter airplane. Six different vertical-tail configurations were investigated to determine the lateral-directional oscillation characteristics, the sideslip characteristics, the yaw due to ailerons in rudder-fixed rolls from turns and pull-outs, the trim changes due to speed changes, and the trim changes due to power changes. Results of the tests showed that increasing the aspect ratio of the vertical tail by 40 percent while increasing the area by only 12 percent approximately doubled the directional stability of the airplane" (p. 453).

Production of black oxide from torbernite was studied on a laboratory scale from the standpoint of uranium extraction, reagent requirements, and removal of impurities. A small portion of the material was examined for its mineral constituents, using optical properties, X-ray diffraction patterns, and chemical analysis for identification. About 50% of the material was quartz; 30% green crystals of a copper-uranium phosphate; 10% of a black mineral, which was not identified, but which appeared to be an oxide mixture of nickel, cobalt, copper, and molybdenum; and small amounts of gibbsite, laterite and feldspar. There were no lower oxides of uranium in the sample.

Abstract: Three and nine-tenths milligrams of U234 have been produced using a Calutron. A Beta-size Calutron was modified to produce complete resolution of the U234 beam from the U235 beam. With Beta charge the U234 current was 4 microamperes. The samples were collected upon flat pieces of graphite bent to fit the E curve.

Operation of the D and F Piles is reported. Other items reported are: general; water, corrosion and engineering (graphite expansion).

During the three-month period covered by this report, a large share of the time of many investigators has been spent in collating work done under the Biology Section of the Metallurgical laboratory for publication in the Plutonium Project Record. The large amount of work done under wartime pressure has made this, as in other divisions and projects, an important part of the transition to the post-war period."

From abstract: "Rats have been fed active strontium which was adsorbed on clay, while their controls were fed the same amount of active strontium in aqueous solution. There was no significant difference in the amount deposited in the skeleton between the two groups, and it is concluded that if ions are adsorbed on inert material, they will be eluted during their passage through the gastrointestinal tract."
