Transcript of an interview with Lloyd Gossell, a Marine Corps veteran (A Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Regiment, 5th Marine Division), concerning his experiences during the assault on Iwo Jima, February-March, 1945. Gossell discusses his enlistment and boot camp, San Diego, California, 1942; assignment to the 3rd Marine Parachute Battalion, 1942; jungle training on New Caledonia, 1942-43; transfer to Guadalcanal, 1943; combat on Bougainville, 1943-44; return to the States to help form the 5th Marine Division; final training, Camp Tarawa, Hawaii, 1944-45; briefings and meetings en route to Iwo Jima; the pre-invasion bombardment of Iwo Jima; the initial assault on February 17, 1945; conditions on Green Beach; the assault across terraces to the base of Mount Suribachi; isolating Mount Suribachi from the rest of the island; transfer to the north end of Iwo Jima and combat on Hill 362-A; combat in "Death Valley"; occupation of Japan. Optics and multilayer coatings for EUVL systems

EUV lithography (EUVL) employs illumination wavelengths around 13.5 nm, and in many aspects it is considered an extension of optical lithography, which is used for the high-volume manufacturing (HVM) of today's microprocessors. The EUV wavelength of illumination dictates the use of reflective optical elements (mirrors) as opposed to the refractive lenses used in conventional lithographic systems. Thus, EUVL tools are based on all-reflective concepts: they use multilayer (ML) coated optics for their illumination and projection systems, and they have a ML-coated reflective mask.

Modelling the Madden Julian Oscillation

The MJO has long been an aspect of the global climate that has provided a tough test for the climate modelling community. Since the 1980s there have been numerous studies of the simulation of the MJO in atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs), ranging from Hayashi and Golder (1986, 1988) and Lau and Lau (1986), through to more recent studies such as Wang and Schlesinger (1999) and Wu et al. (2002). Of course, attempts to reproduce the MJO in climate models have proceeded in parallel with developments in our understanding of what the MJO is and what drives it. In fact, many advances in understanding the MJO have come through modeling studies. In particular, failure of climate models to simulate various aspects of the MJO has prompted investigations into the mechanisms that are important to its initiation and maintenance, leading to improvements both in our understanding of, and ability to simulate, the MJO. The initial focus of this chapter will be on modeling the MJO during northern winter, when it is characterized as a predominantly eastward propagating mode and is most readily seen in observations. Bridging the Gap in the Chemical Thermodynamic Database for Nuclear Waste Repository: Studies of the Effect of Temperature on Actinide Complexation

Recent results of thermodynamic studies on the complexation of actinides (UO{sub 2}{sup 2+}, NpO{sub 2}{sup +} and Pu{sup 4+}) with F{sup -}, SO{sub 4}{sup 2-} and H{sub 2}PO{sub 4}{sup -}/HPO{sub 4}{sup 2-} at elevated temperatures are reviewed. The data indicate that, for all systems except the 1:1 complexation of Np(V) with HPO{sub 4}{sup 2-}, the complexation of actinides is enhanced by the increase in temperature. The enhancement is primarily due to the increase in the entropy term (T{Delta}S) that exceeds the increase in the enthalpy ({Delta}H) as the temperature is increased. These data bridge the gaps in the chemical thermodynamic database for nuclear waste repository where the temperature could remain significantly higher than 25 C for a long time after the closure of the repository.

THE DYNAMICS OF HYDROGEN ATOM ABSTRACTION FROM POLYATOMIC MOLECULES.

The hydrogen atom abstraction reaction is an important fundamental process that is extensively involved in atmospheric and combustion chemistry. The practical significance of this type of reaction with polyatomic hydrocarbons is manifest, which has led to many kinetics studies. The detailed understanding of these reactions requires corresponding dynamics studies. However, in comparison to the A + HX {radical} AH + X reactions, the study of the dynamics of A + HR {yields} AH + R reactions is much more difficult, both experimentally and theoretically (here and in the following, A stands for an atom, X stands for a halogen atom, and R stands for a polyatomic hydrocarbon radical). The complication stems from the structured R, in contrast to the structureless X. First of all, there are many internal degrees of freedom in R that can participate in the reaction. In addition, there are different carbon sites from which an H atom can be abstracted, and the dynamics are correspondingly different; there are also multiple identical carbon sites in HR and in the picture of a local reaction, there exist competitions between neighboring H atoms, and so on. U.S. Department of Energy Photovoltaic Energy Program Contract Summary: Fiscal Year 2000

This report summarizes the in-house and subcontracted research and development (R and D) activities under the National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Photovoltaics Program from October 1, 1999, through September 30, 2000 (FY 2000). The mission of the DOE National Photovoltaics Program is to make PV a significant part of the domestic economy-as an industry and an energy resource. The two primary goals of the national program are to (1) maintain the U.S. industry's world leadership in research and technology development and (2) help the U.S. industry remain a major, profitable force in the world market. The NCPV is part of the National PV Program and provides leadership and support to the national program toward achieving its mission and goals. This Contract Summary for fiscal year (FY) 2000 documents some 179 research projects supported by the PV Program, performed by 107 organizations in 32 states, including 69 projects performed by universities and 60 projects performed by our industry partners. Of the total FY 2000 PV Program budget of $65.9 million, the industry and university research efforts received $36.9 million, or nearly 56%. A Guidebook to the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuel Transportation Program for State and Alternative Fuel Provider Fleets

The country's increasing dependence on imported oil and the relative instability of the oil-producing countries prompted Congress to pass the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 1992. The Act called on the US Department of Energy (DOE) to expand research and development in the transportation sector, and to create programs for accelerating the introduction of alternative fueled vehicles (AFVs) to replace conventional models fueled by gasoline. DOE's Alternative Fuel Transportation Program, as codified in 10 CFR Part 490, implements the provisions in Sections 501, 507(o), 508, 511, 512, and 513 of EPAct. These sections (1) Call for DOE to promulgate rulemakings requiring State government fleets and alternative fuel providers to acquire AFVs in certain gradually increasing percentages; (2) Set forth a credit program to reward those who purchase or lease AFVs either earlier than required, or in greater numbers than required; (3) Establish reporting procedures; (4) Implement exemption provisions; and (5) Set forth enforcement procedures and provisions. State government fleet managers and alternative fuel providers must determine if they are covered by these provisions, and take certain steps to be in compliance if they are covered. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Thermal Test Facility in Golden, Colorado, was designed using a whole-building approach--looking at the way the building's systems worked together most efficiently. Researchers monitor the performance of the 11,000-square-foot building, which boasts an energy cost savings of 63% for heating, cooling, and lighting. The basic plan of the building can be adapted to many needs, including retail and warehouse space. The Thermal Test Facility contains office and laboratory space; research focuses on the development of energy-efficiency and renewable energy technologies that are cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

AUTOMATION FOR THE SYNTHESIS AND APPLICATION OF PET RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS.

The development of automated systems supporting the production and application of PET radiopharmaceuticals has been an important focus of researchers since the first successes of using carbon-11 (Comar et al., 1979) and fluorine-18 (Reivich et al., 1979) labeled compounds to visualize functional activity of the human brain. These initial successes of imaging the human brain soon led to applications in the human heart (Schelbert et al., 1980), and quickly radiochemists began to see the importance of automation to support PET studies in humans (Lambrecht, 1982; Langstrom et al., 1983). Driven by the necessity of controlling processes emanating high fluxes of 511 KeV photons, and by the tedium of repetitive syntheses for carrying out these human PET investigations, academic and government scientists have designed, developed and tested many useful and novel automated systems in the past twenty years. These systems, originally designed primarily by radiochemists, not only carry out effectively the tasks they were designed for, but also demonstrate significant engineering innovation in the field of laboratory automation.

Superconductivity and structure in La{sub 2{minus}x}M{sub x}CuO{sub 4}, M=Ba, Sr, and (Nd,Sr)

The identification of charge stripes in La{sub 2{minus}x{minus}y}Nd{sub y}Sr{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (Nd-214) has reenergized research on the original high transition temperature {Tc} superconductor, La{sub 2{minus}x}Ba{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (Ba-214), and related compounds. Early in the study of Ba-214, a low temperature phase transition was associated with changes in electrical properties. An apparent suppression of {Tc} near Ba x=0.125, was initially associated with a first order low temperature phase transformation. However, it was later shown that only very near Ba x=0.125 was {Tc} reduced markedly, and that the relationship between crystal structure and {Tc} is more complicated. This review well describe the low temperature crystal structures and microstructures, as well as the superconducting properties as determined from low field (1-100G) dc magnetometer measurements for Ba-214, Nd-214, and La{sub 2{minus}x}Sr{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (Sr-214). The authors will also describe some work in the related La{sub 2{minus}x}Ca{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (Ca-214). A basic knowledge of the interactions among superconductivity and low temperature phases will allow one to better understand the significance of the underlying charge stripe phases.

It is intended for Federal solar energy champions; that is, energy officers, contracting officials, facility managers, and others who plan or work on projects in which solar and other renewable energy technologies are installed in Federal government facilities, per the directives of Executive Order 13123 and the President's Million Solar Roofs Initiative. This issue contains an article about a new initiative led by DOE and the Department of the Interior/National Park Service; it involves obtaining more renewable energy systems for the national parks. Another article describes projects adding solar and wind systems to government facilities serving Native Americans, and there are other news items as well.
