The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Barret (Bud) Payne. Payne joined the Marine Corps in June of 1943. He completed boot camp in San Diego. He completed Radio Gunnery School, and served as a Private First-Class Radio Gunner aboard a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver. For a short time, he was assigned to Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 141 (VMSB-141) at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California. They were transferred to Hawaii, and later to Majuro in the Marshall Islands. In early 1945, Payne completed 7 missions from Majuro, including over the Mili and Watje atolls. He was stationed in Majuro when the war ended. He worked in occupied China from October through April of 1946, returned home and received his discharge.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with William Craig. Craig was born in Freeport, Pennsylvania in 1918. Following graduation from high school he was employed by Allegheny Steel Corporation. He was drafted into the United States Army Air Forces in May 1942 and completed basic training at Miami Beach, Florida. He was then sent to Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama as a clerk in an Army Airways Communications System (AACS) unit. He describes the unusual living accommodations during that period. He recalls being transferred to Casablanca, North Africa to the 4th AACS Wing in 1944. He returned to the United States during 1945 and was discharged.

Transcript of an oral interview with George S. Mixell. Mixell dropped out of high school and joined the Army in November, 1940 at York, Pennsylvania. He was assigned to a heavy weapons company in the 158th Infantry Regiment (Bushmasters) in Panama. Mixell shares several anecdotes about jungle training in Panama, quelling a riot in Panama City, and patrolling around the canal. He was in Panama one year before shipping out to Australia. From Australia, Mixell and the Bushmasters went to New Guinea. He worked along the Kokoda Trail in the Owen Stanley Mountains training with horses. He mentions listening to Tokyo Rose on the radio and being entertained by her. Mixell's job in New Guinea was to provide security for the officers in the Headquarters Company and he located seven Japanese snipers. He had a brief encounter with General MacArthur. Mixell also mentions he spent time in the hospital suffering with malaria and jungle rot. Finally, he shares a few incidents about his life after he was discharged from the service.

Transcript of an oral interview with Ellsworth Handy. Born in 1914, he entered the Army in August, 1940. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Headquarters, 29th Quartermaster Regiment. In early 1942 he was sent to the Pacific Theater. He describes being transported from San Francisco, California to Australia aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth. He was responsible for running convoys of trucks in remote areas of the country. As Plans and Recreation Officer in Brisbane, he arranged entertainment in a local theater for soldiers on leave. He was sent to Milne Bay, New Guinea and the Philippines where he was responsible for trucking activities. He describes witnessing General MacArthur’s return to the Philippines. He shares an anecdote about a narrow escape during an air raid. He talks about not being rotated back to the U.S. as part of the normal two-year rotation. He left active duty in 1945. He served in the Reserves until 1981. The interview also contains information about his family during the Depression.

This recording is a part of the radio series “Toscanini: The Man Behind the Legend,” which was a tribute to conductor Arturo Toscanini. The broadcasts consist of music performed by the NBC Orchestra as well as interviews with composers, conductors, orchestra members, and other people associated with Toscanini. This segment includes performances of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor, Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Orfeo ed Euridice and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite.
