Grain Size Study on Irradiated Powder Metal Uranium (open access)

Grain Size Study on Irradiated Powder Metal Uranium

Metallographic examination of an irradiated powder metal uranium slug from PT-313-105-4M⁽¹⁾ was undertaken primarily as an evaluation of recently remotized metallographic equipment. It was, also, proposed to compare the grain size with values obtained ultrasonically on the same slug. It was further proposed to make a comparison, so far as limited data permitted, of post-irradiated powder metal uranium grain size with that to be expected from normal uranium similarly irradiated.

Studies on the Determination of Carbon by the Low Pressure Combustion Method

Technical report: The apparatus for the low pressure combustion method of determining carbon in iron and steel has be redesigned to increase the speed of manipulation. It has been tested by running several thousand determinations and found to yield results in good agreement with Wooten's form of the apparatus. A detailed description of the equipment and its manipulation is given together with an account of experimental studies on the method. Results are also shown for the carbon content of copper.

The Reduction Of Boolean Truth Functions To Minimal Form (open access)

The Reduction Of Boolean Truth Functions To Minimal Form

The problem of the reduction of an arbitrary truth function to the minimal union of basic cells is discussed. The solution to this problem has applications to pattern recognition and logical circuit design. An algorithm is presented that solves the problem and generates the class of minimal unions. It partitions an arbitrary truth function into a well-defined set of subfunctions (components) in such a way that the partition is invariant under all transformations that preserve the topology of the original truth function.

Theory of Final State Interactions (open access)

Theory of Final State Interactions

Using requirements of analyticity and the unitarity of the S-matrix we obtain the dependence of a transition amplitude on the invariant mass of two particles strongly coupled to other two particle channels. As an example, we consider the production of a Σπ state near the Y*₀ resonance assuming it is coupled to a KN state in an s 1/2 state.

NPR Single Pass Decontamination (open access)

NPR Single Pass Decontamination

The design of NPR shows large quantities of carbon steel pipe and fittings in the front and rear face areas. These are also the area where the most work must be done during an outage, and consequently lower radiation levels are needed here than elsewhere in the piping system. A single pass decontamination of the front and rear piping without going through the entire loop is desirable. Because of the quantities of chemicals and available down time, an effective shorty interval process is needed. This report gives some recent laboratory data on this subject.

Autoxidation of Uranous Salts in Water Solution (open access)

Autoxidation of Uranous Salts in Water Solution

From introduction: "The fact that tetravalent uranium either in the form of solutions of its salts or, in some cases, in the dry state is readily oxidized by gaseous oxygen, has been observed by various investigators. A quantitative study of this reaction appeared to be desirable as a means of learning more about the nature of the ionic species present in uranous solutions. It was also of potential value in determining the importance of autoxidation as an undesirable side reaction involved in the handling of uranous solutions, and, if necessary, in developing procedures for minimizing the reaction."

PCTR Measurement of EGCR Control Rod Worth (open access)

PCTR Measurement of EGCR Control Rod Worth

This paper describes the measurement of control rod strength in the PCTR. The first section outlines the theory and method of such a measurement, and the second section presents the results of the measurement of the Experimental Gas Cooled Reactor (EGCR) control rod strength. The reactor parameter actually inferred is the difference in the infinitive multiplication factor for a control rod supercell with and without the control rod in place in the supercell. These measurements are, therefore, very closely related to the measurement of k∞ for an ordinary lattice cell.

Thermal Annealing Kinetics of C₀ Spacing Damage in Irradiated Graphite (open access)

Thermal Annealing Kinetics of C₀ Spacing Damage in Irradiated Graphite

Graphite suffers radiation damage when exposed to high energy particles. Many of its physical and chemical properties are changed. One of the effects which is easily measured is an increase in the interlayer or C₀ distance of the crystal lattice. This has been attributed to the displacement of atoms or groups of atoms into interstitial positions of the lattice forcing the planes apart. The C₀ expansion may be annealed out by heating the damaged crystal to high temperatures. This paper deals with the rate of annealing of C₀ damage at several constant temperatures.

Contributions to the Radiochemistry of 104 day Y88. (open access)

Contributions to the Radiochemistry of 104 day Y88.

From introductory paragraph: "The study of the counting techniques of gamma-emitting radioisotopes is of a great deal of interest to workers in the field of radiochemistry. Of particular interest to the long-lived gamma emitting isotope of yttrium which is commonly prepared by a deuteron bombardment of strontium and is reported to decay by K-capture. This isotope, which is of interest in the fields of biochemistry and metallurgy was tentatively assigned to mass 86. Since a 2.0 hour activity was observed from a neutron irradiation of yttrium, the assignment was considered fixed. Subsequent work indicated a possibility of a long-lived gamma emitting activity arising in the fast neutron irradiation of yttrium. The published data did not agree with theoretical calculations as to the possibility of these two activities being isomers. This work was undertaken to study the characteristics of the radiations from the isotopes; to have data available on the long-lived activity; and, to attempt to fix the mass assignment."

A Study of an Accidental Radiation Burst (open access)

A Study of an Accidental Radiation Burst

An accidental burst of radiation occurred at the laboratory on 1 February 1951 during remote control operation of a critical experiment. There was no personnel hazard. Normal operations were resumed within 24 hr, and the active material involved in the burst returned to service within three weeks. An unforeseen brief excursion into the prompt critical region was engendered in the act of scramming the assembly at the end of a series of measurements. This report describes the effects of the burst and analyzes the probable causes in some detail.

The Strontium-Strontium Hydride Phase System (open access)

The Strontium-Strontium Hydride Phase System

Technical report. From Abstract : "The Sr-SrH2 phase diagram was studied by thermal analysis, chemical analysis of equilibrated phases and X-ray diffraction. The maximum solubility of SrH2 in strontium metal is 38 mole % at the peritectic temperature of 880°C. Strontium metal undergoes an allotropic transformation at 555°C and melts at 768°C. A second transformation was found, at about 240°C, in samples containing hydrogen. Strontium hydride was found to have an allotropic transformation at 855°C."
