Oral History Interview with Robert R. Bridges, July 20, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert R. Bridges. Bridges joined the Marine Corps in January of 1942. He completed Officer Candidate School in October of 1943. He served with the 2nd Marine Division, 18th Marine Regiment during the battles of Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian. He returned to Saipan for preparations to invade Japan, where he remained through the end of the war. Bridges received his discharge in January of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Fred Daum, July 20, 2012

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Fred Daum. Daum joined the Navy in February 1942 and received basic training at Great Lakes and electrician’s mate training at the University of Minnesota. Upon completion, he was assigned to USS LCI-67, where he was responsible for all the electrical work aboard ship. At Bougainville, on Christmas Eve 1943, his ship was tasked with going one mile behind the Japanese position with the purpose of drawing artillery fire to locate their battery; fortunately, the Japanese never opened fire and Daum escaped unscathed. He was transferred back to the States in July 1944, helping run bond rallies, using search lights to illuminate the latest military equipment. Daum was discharged in October 1945.

This recording is a part of the radio series “Toscanini: The Man Behind the Legend,” which was a tribute to conductor Arturo Toscanini. The broadcasts consist of music performed by the NBC Orchestra as well as interviews with composers, conductors, orchestra members, and other people associated with Toscanini. This segment includes performances of Mozart's Overture to Le Nozze di Figaro, Debussy's Iberia from Images and Ravel's Suite No. II from Daphnis et Chloé, and features a rehearsal of the NBC Orchestra.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Frederick Gilsinger. Gilsinger joined the Army Air Forces in August of 1943. He completed basic training in Biloxi, Mississippi and navigation at Butler University, Indianapolis. He was a second lieutenant and served as a B-26 pilot. He provides vivid details of the various planes he flew during wartime, including the B-26, B-25, A-26, Piper Cub, PT-19, BT-13 and the AT-17. Gilsinger remained stateside throughout his service in the war. He was discharged in September of 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Joe R. Griffin. Griffin joined the Marine Corps in December of 1942. He served in Company C, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division. They participated in the battles of Kwajalein, Tinian and Saipan. In June of 1944, on Saipan, Griffin received a direct hit, shattering his right arm. He was evacuated and received an honorable discharge in April of 1945.

Oral History Interview with Searcy Griffin, July 20, 2006

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Searcy Griffin. Griffin joined the Navy in 1942. In October he was assigned to the USS Bull (DE-693). They traveled to Bermuda, Aruba and Northern Ireland. In May of 1943 Griffin was assigned to the minesweeper USS Scuffle (AM-298). In mid-1944 they transported supplies for a convoy to Pearl Harbor, swept mines in French Frigate Shoals, escorted a convoy to Eniwetok and arrived at Leyte in December of 1944. In January of 1945 they participated in the pre-invasion sweeps at Lingayen Gulf. Additionally, they provided antisubmarine and antiaircraft protection for the transports. In February they began pre-invasion sweeps in Manila Bay in preparation for landings at Mariveles and Corregidor, encountering Japanese attacks. In July of 1945 they traveled to Balikpapan and provided support to YMSs performing the pre-invasion sweep. They returned to the United States in April of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Royce Keiser, July 20, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Royce Keiser. Keiser joined the Army in February of 1943. He served in the 156th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery B, 44th Infantry Division, 7th Army. Keiser worked as a lineman, stringing wire between switchboards and firing batteries, and also worked as a cannoneer on the 105mm howitzer. In September of 1944 he traveled overseas to Cherbourg, France, maneuvered through Mannheim and Worms, Germany, crossed the Rhine, moved into Lunéville, France to the front lines, and traveled through the Siegfried Line. Keiser participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He shares details of his combat experiences. Once the war ended, he traveled to Innsbruck, Austria. In July of 1945 he returned to the US and discharged in November.

Oral History Interview with Norman Sterrie, July 20, 2007

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Norman Sterrie. Sterrie was born 14 November 1917 in St. James, Minnesota and graduated from high school in 1934. Upon graduating from college in 1939 he joined the Navy. He graduated from flight school at Pensacola in 1940 and was assigned to Torpedo Squadron 2 on the USS Lexington (CV-2). His first combat mission occurred in March 1942 when his squadron attacked Japanese shipping at Salamaua, New Guinea. During his next mission, he and eleven others in his flight dropped torpedoes on HIJNS Shokaku. During the Battle of the Coral Sea, as Sterrie prepared to depart the Lexington, the ship was hit by torpedoes. He abandoned ship and was picked up by the USS New Orleans (CA-32). His squadron was taken to New Caledonia where they instructed Army pilots in torpedo warfare. Upon returning to the US, Sterrie was assigned to Torpedo Squadron 16 (VT-16), on the new USS Lexington (CV-16). He describes various missions he flew off until the Lexington was hit by torpedoes on 4 December 1943. After being repaired, the ship returned to the Pacific.
