CaO interaction in the staged combustion of coal

The LIMB (limestone injection multi-stage burner) process offers special potential for reducing NO/sub x/ and SO/sub x/ by at least 50 percent in coal combustion. This is to be accomplished by adding limestone with fuel and/or air in a low NO/sub x/ burner. This program has been directed to defining the chemistry and kinetics necessary to optimize sulfur capture in LIMB combustion. More specifically, this program has attempted to clarify the role of calcium sulfide in LIMB chemistry. When limestone is added in a staged burner, there is a strong possibility that under certain circumstances CaS is produced in the reducing (fuel-rich) zone of the burner. Since CaS is more stable than CaSO/sub 4/, this affords the opportunity to (1) operate the burner at a higher temperature, 2200 to 2500 F, (2) pass the CaS rapidly through the high temperature zone (before dissociation), and (3) complete the combustion in a lean (air-rich) region where the sulfur is finally retained in CaSO/sub 4/. New Cyclotron Targetry to Enhance F-18 clinical Position Emission Tomography

This project proposes to develop cyclotron targets that produce F-18 for clinical Positron Emission Tomography (PET) at significantly higher rates than that available from current targetry. This production rate of 18F is directly proportional to the beam current. Higher beam currents would result in increased 18F production but would be accompanied by higher heat loads to the target. The beam power available in most commercial cyclotrons exceeds the heat removal capacity of current target technology by a factor of two to four, significantly limiting the production rate of Fluorine-18.

Electron cyclotron resonance heating of tandem mirrors

Heating electrons by microwave power near either the electron cyclotron frequency or its harmonic is analyzed in some detail. The purpose of this study is to determine whether electrons in current or future mirror devices could be heated by electromagnetic waves in this frequency range. Absorption lengths, accessibility conditions, and appropriate polarization are among the concerns studied. It is found that the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) may efficiently be heated by the extraordinary mode at omega = omega either in the solenoid-to-plug transition region or near the center of the plug at densities napprox. = 10/sup 13/cm/sup -3/.

Experimental investigation of the production of glueballs and meson resonance states

We have made striking and considerable progress in our AGS program which is searching for a Quark-Gluon Plasma or other new phenomena at the AGS. We are employing a TCP Tracking Magnetic Spectrometer that has handled up to {approx}100 tracks, the maximum observed in 14.5 GeV/c {times} A Si ions incident on Au and Cu. In essence the TPC covers more than the forward half hemisphere in the nucleon-nucleon cms (i.e. {ge} 2{pi}) and thus allows tracking, momentum and angular analysis of the charged particles emitted in these heavy ion collisions. Particle identification for negative pions can be made approximately by assuming negative particles are pions. Then by subtraction of negatives from positives in a suitable manner the proton characteristics can be determined. {Lambda} and K{sub s}{sup 0} V particles have been identified singly in events and {approx}50 double {Lambda} and 2 triple {Lambda} events have been observed in the relatively small data sample we have obtained and analyzed this year. Further discussion of these topics are contained in this report.

Hydraulic transients for loss of coolant accidents

This paper discusses calculations related to hydraulics in a loss of coolant reactor accident. Earlier calculations ignored the effect of emergency coolant injection. Present results show that if the ECS flow is considered, reactor coolant flow is maintained for much longer periods. A computer program used to carry out the calculations is included in this report. (Thermal energy storage technologies for heating and cooling applications)

Recent results from selected TES research activities in Germany and Sweden under an associated IEA annex are discussed. In addition, several new technologies for heating and cooling of buildings and automobiles were reviewed and found to benefit similar efforts in the United states. Details of a meeting with Didier-Werke AG, a leading German ceramics manufacturer who will provide TES media necessary for the United States to complete field tests of an advanced high temperature latent heat storage material, are presented. Finally, an overview of the December 1990 IEA Executive Committee deliberations on TES is presented.

In order to reduce both charge-discharge shutdown time and the number of manhours of radiation exposure, Project CGI-884 is being completed at the B, D, DR, F and R Reactors. This consists essentially of installing a large drain line at the bottom of one rear reactor riser. This drain line passes to a control valve and then to the effluent line beyond the downcomer. This system by-passes the crossover downcomer part of the effluent system and eliminates the need for intermittent rear crossheader valving during reactor charge-discharge procedures. Two aspects of this system have been considered, its basic design requirements, and operating restrictions to ensure adequate process tube cooling. Because of the complexity of the reactor flow system approximate solutions were used to compare different methods or degrees of operation and establish limits. Despite these approximations, there was sufficient difference in the case results to justify the specific conclusions presented in this report. This report should serve the dual purpose of providing design requirements for the crossunder and also providing the technical criteria necessary for the operating standards for the use of this new system.

An atmospheric tritium release database for model comparisons

A database of vegetation, soil, and air tritium concentrations at gridded coordinate locations following nine accidental atmospheric releases is described. While none of the releases caused a significant dose to the public, the data collected is valuable for comparison with the results of tritium transport models used for risk assessment. The largest, potential, individual off-site dose from any of the releases was calculated to be 1.6 mrem. The population dose from this same release was 46 person-rem which represents 0.04% of the natural background radiation dose to the population in the path of the release.

Synergistic Use of IEEE and IEC Nuclear Power Plant Standards

Many organizations worldwide develop standards that affect nuclear instrumentation and control (I and C). Two of the primary standards organizations are the US IEEE's Nuclear Power Engineering Committee (NPEC), and the IEC subcommittee on Reactor Instrumentation (SC45A). This paper surveys the contents of the two sets of standards. Opportunities for complementary use of IEEE and IEC standards are discussed. The collections of IEEE. and IEC standards have some overlap, but in many cases cover significantly different topics. For example, IEEE standards go to great depth on environmental qualification of many specific types of components, while IEC covers the topic only at the general level. Conversely, certain IEC standards deal with specific instrumentation and control functions, a topic area where IEEE standards are largely mute. This paper considers how the two sets of standards may be used in a complementary fashion to achieve broader topic coverage than is possible using only one or the other standard suite. To understand the similarities and differences between IEC and IEEE nuclear standards layer diagrams were developed for each set of standards. Another paper [Johnson, 2001] used the same layer diagrams to investigate where coordination between the two sets of standards is most critical.

The Next Generation Safeguards Professional Network (NGSPN) was established in 2009 by Oak Ridge National Laboratory targeted towards the engagement of young professionals employed in safeguards across the many national laboratories. NGSPN focuses on providing a mechanism for young safeguards professionals to connect and foster professional relationships, facilitating knowledge transfer between current safeguards experts and the next generation of experts, and acting as an entity to represent the interests of the international community of young and mid-career safeguards professionals. This is accomplished in part with a yearly meeting held at a national laboratory site. In 2011, this meeting was held at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. This report documents the events and results of that meeting.

User's guide to the LIRAQ model: an air pollution model for the San Francisco Bay Area

The Livermore Regional Air Quality (LIRAQ) model comprises a set of computer programs that have been integrated into an easily used tool for the air quality planner. To assemble and modify the necessary data files and to direct model execution, a problem formulation program has been developed that makes possible the setup of a wide variety of studies involving perturbation of the emission inventory, changes to the initial and boundary conditions, and different choices of grid size and problem domain. In addition to describing the types of air quality problems for which the LIRAQ model may be used, this User's Guide provides detailed information on how to set up and conduct model simulations. Also included are descriptions of the formats of input data files so that the LIRAQ model may be applied to regions other than the San Francisco Bay Area.

Figure 1 shows the resistivity models considered in this study; log10 of the resistivity is shown. The graph on the upper left hand side shows a hypothetical resisitivity well log measured along a well in the upper layered model; 10% Gaussian noise has been added to the well log data. The lower model is identical to the upper one except for one square area located within the second deepest layer. Figure 2 shows the electrode configurations considered. The ''reference'' case (upper frame) considers point electrodes located along the surface and along a vertical borehole. The ''CPT electrode'' case (middle frame) assumes that the CPT tip serves as an electrode that is electrically connected to the push rod; the surface electrodes are used in conjuction with the moving CPT electrode. The ''isolated CPT electrode'' case assumes that the electrode at the CPT tip is electrically isolated from the pushrod. Note that the separate CPT push rods in the middle and lower frames are shown separated to clarify the figure; in reality, there is only one pushrod that is changing length as the probe advances.
