Memorandum presenting an analytical evaluation of the air and fuel specific-impulse characteristics of magnesium, magnesium-octene-1 slurries, aluminum, aluminum-octene-1 slurries, boron, boron-octene-1 slurries, carbon, hydrogen, methylnaphthalene, diborane, and pentaborane. Adiabatic constant-pressure combustion temperature, air specific impulse, fuel specific impulse, and equilibrium composition data are given for each fuel over a range of equivalence ratios.

Report presenting an investigation of the aerodynamic loading characteristics of a wing-fuselage combination in the slotted test section of the transonic tunnel. The test was part of a systematic investigation of the effects of varying the amount of sweepback on wings in order to determine their suitability for transonic flight. Results regarding span load characteristics, normal-force characteristics, wing-tip angle of twist, spanwise distribution of section pitching-moment coefficient, pitching-moment characteristics, and fuselage characteristics in presence of wing are provided.

Report presenting an investigation of whether or not a two-stage turbine with the frontal area no larger than the compressor frontal area could be satisfactorily designed to drive a particular compressor under take-off conditions. The low blade-tip speed, high work, and high air flow per unit of frontal area of the compressor make it critical that a two-stage turbine is designed to drive it. Results regarding the effect of work division, effect of variation in cone angle, and effects of radial variations on velocity diagrams are provided.

"Flight measurements of the aerodynamic wing and tail loads have been made on the Douglas D-558-II airplane from which the distribution of the aerodynamic load among the wing, fuselage, and horizontal tail has been determined at Mach numbers up to 0.87. These measurements indicate that, for normal-force coefficients less than 0.7, the distribution of air load among the airplane components does not change appreciably with Mach number at Mach number up to 0.87. The measurements also indicate that, for all flight configurations, the increase in airplane normal-force coefficient above the angle of attack at which the wing reaches its maximum normal-force coefficient is due principally to the contribution of the fuselage to the airplane normal-force coefficient" (p. 1).

Report presenting an investigation to determine the directional characteristics of a sharp-nosed fuselage through a large angle-of-attack range at zero angle of sideslip. The fuselage was found to experience a large increase in yawing moment as the angle of attack increases. The results also indicated that a ring or other roughness used on the nose caused a large decrease in the yawing moment obtained at high angles of attack.

Report presenting an investigation in the supersonic wind tunnel on an inlet employing conical flow separation from a probe extending upstream from a hemispherical-nosed centerbody. Pressure-recovery and drag characteristics for the inlet were very nearly comparable with a conical-spike inlet, but compared less favorably at Mach numbers below 2.0. A large reduction in pressure recovery and mass flow was obtained at angle of attack.

Memorandum presenting a model bomb-release investigation conducted in the 9-inch supersonic tunnel at a Mach number of 1.62 to determine what first-order interference effects are involved in making releases at supersonic speeds and, in some cases, to ascertain what modifications might be made to obtain near-level drops. The results of these tests indicate that the interference effects of the fuselage or wing-pylon upon the bomb release are, in most cases, adverse.

Compatibility of Pentaborane With Materials Used for Seals, Gaskets, and Construction

Memorandum presenting the compatibility of pentaborane with aluminum foil, 24S-T and 17S-T aluminum, and 50-50 tin-lead solder in the range of -30 to -50 degrees F for 7 hours, at 90 degrees F for 6.5 hours, and at 70 degrees F for 28 days. Results were evaluated by determination of the loss in weight after the test period, metallographic inspection, and comparison with blanks carried through test conditions without exposure to the liquid. The evaluation of results was made by visual inspection and physical tests of dimensional stability, tensile strength, elasticity, and gain or loss of weight.
