SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENT OF CIRCULAR DICHROISM AND FLUORESCENCE POLARIZATION ANISOTROPY. (open access)

SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENT OF CIRCULAR DICHROISM AND FLUORESCENCE POLARIZATION ANISOTROPY.

Circular dichroism and fluorescence polarization anisotropy are important tools for characterizing biomolecular systems. Both are used extensively in kinetic experiments involving stopped- or continuous flow systems as well as titrations and steady-state spectroscopy. This paper presents the theory for determining circular dichroism and fluorescence polarization anisotropy simultaneously, thus insuring the two parameters are recorded under exactly the same conditions and at exactly the same time in kinetic experiments. The approach to measuring circular dichroism is that used in almost all conventional dichrographs. Two arrangements for measuring fluorescence polarization anisotropy are described. One uses a single fluorescence detector and signal processing with a lock-in amplifier that is similar to the measurement of circular dichroism. The second approach uses classic ''T'' format detection optics, and thus can be used with conventional photon-counting detection electronics. Simple extensions permit the simultaneous measurement of the absorption and excitation intensity corrected fluorescence intensity.

Africa: U.S. Foreign Assistance Issues

This report discusses the issue of U.S. economic assistance to sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the importance of continued assistance in light of U.S. national security and also various U.S.-led efforts to promote reform amongst African citizens themselves. U.S. assistance finds its way to Africa through a variety of channels, including the USAID-administered DA program, food aid programs, and indirect aid provided through international financial institutions and the United Nations.

Application of Monte Carlo Methods in Molecular Targeted Radionuclide Therapy (open access)

Application of Monte Carlo Methods in Molecular Targeted Radionuclide Therapy

Targeted radionuclide therapy promises to expand the role of radiation beyond the treatment of localized tumors. This novel form of therapy targets metastatic cancers by combining radioactive isotopes with tumor-seeking molecules such as monoclonal antibodies and custom-designed synthetic agents. Ultimately, like conventional radiotherapy, the effectiveness of targeted radionuclide therapy is limited by the maximum dose that can be given to a critical, normal tissue, such as bone marrow, kidneys, and lungs. Because radionuclide therapy relies on biological delivery of radiation, its optimization and characterization are necessarily different than for conventional radiation therapy. We have initiated the development of a new, Monte Carlo transport-based treatment planning system for molecular targeted radiation therapy as part of the MINERVA treatment planning system. This system calculates patient-specific radiation dose estimates using a set of computed tomography scans to describe the 3D patient anatomy, combined with 2D (planar image) and 3D (SPECT, or single photon emission computed tomography) to describe the time-dependent radiation source. The accuracy of such a dose calculation is limited primarily by the accuracy of the initial radiation source distribution, overlaid on the patient's anatomy. This presentation provides an overview of MINERVA functionality for molecular targeted radiation therapy, and describes early validation …

The Artist as Priest and Prophet - Messages: The Voice Crying in the Wilderness

Lecture given Tuesday, February 19, 2002, 2:00 PM at Abilene Christian University: "The church cultivates believing souls by answering compelling questions, while the artist cultivates seeing souls by raising compelling images. Is there a conflict - an identity - in the believing artist's dual relationship with the Kingdom and the "world?" How can she be true to her work and be true to the community of faith?"

Breathing New Life Into Communion - More Than a Funeral

Lecture given Tuesday, February 19, 2002, 8:30 AM at Abilene Christian University: "Some churches complain that the Lord's Supper has become a ritual, while others see it as a barrier to reaching seekers. Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenases and Acetyl-CoA Synthases: Light at the End of the Tunnel? (open access)

Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenases and Acetyl-CoA Synthases: Light at the End of the Tunnel?

OAK-B135 Metalloenzymes seem to ''come of age'' when their structures are known at atomic resolution, spectroscopic and catalytic properties are basically understood, and genetic expression systems are available. Such foundations allow detailed mechanistic and spectroscopic properties to be probed and correlated to structure. The objective of this article is to summarize what is known about the title group of enzymes, and show that, to a large degree, they have come of age.

Celebrating the Wrath of God - The Triumph of Trust

Lecture given Tuesday, February 19, 2002, 2:00 PM at Abilene Christian University: "These presentations claim that the wrath of God is another face of His holy love dealing with humanity's sin. It embraces humanity as a whole and shows itself as the suffering we see in the world. The wrath not only speaks of the sinfulness of our sin; it proclaims God's steadfast refusal to let us sink without trace. And since His loving wrath is so pervasive and relentless, it implies a glorious end that will "justify the means.""

Children Should Be Seen and Heard: Nurturing the Spirituality of Children - Let the Little Children Come: Why?

Lecture given Tuesday, February 19, 2002, 9:45 AM at Abilene Christian University: "When Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me," He wasn't just inviting them to Sunday school; He was affirming their place in His Kingdom, His church. Growing a new generation of faith-filled Christians requires a commitment to rich communal practices that enable children to learn the language of faith, participate in the life of God's people and receive their lives as a celebration of the believing community."

A Church that Flies - Big Rocks First

Lecture given Tuesday, February 19, 2002, 9:45 AM at Abilene Christian University: "Everyone wants to be part of a "faithful" church. But "faithful" to what? To an apostolic patter? To an inherited tradition? To the purposes God intends for the church? We are commissioned people. God has work for us to do. This class identifies what God wants the church to be about and encourages to put that work first."

Lecture given Tuesday, February 19, 2002, 2:00 PM at Abilene Christian University: "Christians are regulary challenged to soar in their spirituality, but few are given wings and taught to fly. Development of Advanced Multi-Modality Radiation Treatment Planning Software (open access)

Development of Advanced Multi-Modality Radiation Treatment Planning Software

The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) has long been active in development of advanced Monte-Carlo based computational dosimetry and treatment planning methods and software for advanced radiotherapy, with a particular focus on Neutron Capture Therapy (NCT) and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Fast-Neutron Therapy. The most recent INEEL software product system of this type is known as SERA, Simulation Environment for Radiotherapy Applications. SERA is at a mature level in its life cycle, it has been licensed for research use worldwide, and it has become well established as a computational tool for research. However, along with its strengths, SERA also has some limitations in its structure and computational methodologies. More specifically, it is optimized only for neutron-based applications. Although photon transport can be computed with SERA, the simplified model that is used is designed primarily for photons produced in the neutron transport process. Thus SERA is not appropriate for applications to, for example, standard external-beam photon radiotherapy, which is by far more commonly used in the clinic than neutron based therapy.
