Aerial Radiometric and Magnetic Survey of the Clovis National Topographic Map, NI 13-6, Texas and New Mexico: Volume 1 (open access)

Aerial Radiometric and Magnetic Survey of the Clovis National Topographic Map, NI 13-6, Texas and New Mexico: Volume 1

From objective and plan: The airborne data gathered were reduced using ground-based computer facilities to give the basic uranium, thorium and potassium equivalent gamma radiation intensities, ratios of these intensities, aircraft altitude above the earth's surface, total gamma ray and earth's magnetic field intensity, correlated as a function of geologic units indicated from available geologic maps. Results of analyses of these field data are presented as profile plots of the gamma radiation and earth's magnetic field.

Geology and Ore Deposits of Yazzie Mesa, Apache County, Arizona with Recommendations for Exploration Drilling (open access)

Geology and Ore Deposits of Yazzie Mesa, Apache County, Arizona with Recommendations for Exploration Drilling

Abstract: Yazzie Mesa was examined in May 1951, by the writer, assisted by R. C. Cutter. The mesa shows one main channel deposit and three minor channels. The main channel appears to be a northern extension of a channel deposit being worked by the Vanadium Corporation of America at their Monument No. 2 mine. Two samples taken on the south outcrop of the main channel assayed 0.16% U308 over 4.5 feet and 0.80% U308 over 1 foot. The area is recommended for 10,000 feet of exploration drilling. It is not intended to recommend this footage as a separate contract unit as this report covers only a small part of an area in which drilling will be recommended in forthcoming reports.

The U + 4 - U02 ++ Couple in H2SO , and the U + S - u + 4 Couple in HCl

Technical report: Measurements have been made on the equilibrium between Cu, Cu2+, U4+, and UO22+ in H2SO4 in an attempt to establish the value of the U4+ - UO22+ couple potential. The value of the formal potential for the U3+ - U4+ couple in 1N HCl at 0 degrees C was determined to be + 0.65 v.

The Heat of Solution of Uranium Tetrachloride in Aqueous Perchloric Acid Solutions

Abstract: "The heat of solution of UCl4 solid has been measured and found to change appreciably with changing concentration of H+ or ionic strength. The heat of hydrolysis of U+4 to form UOH+3 is probably of the order of +11 kcal per mole" (p. 1).

Corrosivity of Uranyl Fluoride to Certain Metals (open access)

Corrosivity of Uranyl Fluoride to Certain Metals

Abstract: "The results obtained from the tests conducted for the purpose of determining the corrosivity of a 30 percent-solution of uranyl fluoride to various metals indicate that stainless steels (type 302, 304, 321 and 316) have very good resistance; while monel, nickel and aluminum, respectively, exhibit diminishing resistance. Stainless steel, type 316, was the most resistant of the specimen tested."

Reaction of Graphic with Sodium (open access)

Reaction of Graphic with Sodium

Most of the publications in the open literature available to us agree that sodium does not readily react with graphite, though potassium, rubidium, and cesium readily enter between the planes of the graphite lattice. In view of the conflicting evidence available, it seems inadvisable without very extensive further study to consider the use of graphite in direct contact with liquid sodium, except under very mild conditions of temperature and irradiation, and then only with very pure sodium and completely graphitized graphite.

The Isothermal Transformation of Metastable Beta Uranium Single Crystals (open access)

The Isothermal Transformation of Metastable Beta Uranium Single Crystals

Abstract: "The transformation of metastable beta uranium crystals was found to proceed by a martensitic reaction at room temperature. The features of the transformation of particular interest were that individual uranium martensite plates formed isothermally and grew at a slow rate isothermally."

Attritioning of Temple Mountain Ore (open access)

Attritioning of Temple Mountain Ore

Abstract: The results of both dry and wet attritioning of Temple Mountain ore are presented. In order to obtain effective attritioning on this ore, the amphaltite must be removed before attritioning. With the asphaltite present, dry attritioning causes a build-up of asphaltite on the surface of sand grains, with consequent loss of uranium values. In wet attritioning, the asphaltite is not broken down or attritioned, because of its low specific gravity and resilience.

Conference on "Hot" Laboratory Design Held at Brookhaven National Laboratory on September 19, 1947

From introduction: "This conference represents the first attempt by a project-wide group of scientists and engineers to collaborate on the problem associated with the planning and design of "Hot" Laboratories. The idea, as originally conceived by Dr. W. E. Winsche, was to discuss some general and perhaps some specific aspects of "Hot" Laboratory design with a small group of interests individuals from various sites."

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Graphite Plates with Hydrogen Coolant (open access)

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Graphite Plates with Hydrogen Coolant

"This note presents the results of a parametric study of heat-generating graphite plates with hydrogen coolant flowing through constant area passages. The heat generation within the graphite was assumed to have a distribution that allowed the centerline temperature of the plates to remain constant at 5000 F. The parametric variables were the mass flow rate per unit area, plate thickness, plate length, and passage hydraulic diameter. The machine calculations were coded by Ivan Cherry, T-1."

Expressions for Conversion Ratio in a Th-U²³⁵ Converter

"This memo shall be an attempt to write down in a consistent manner some expressions for conversion ratio so that a comparison can be made with regard to a uniformly loaded core versus a flattered zone surrounded by an unloaded region. The discussion will be limited to the type of loading that is at present being considered for the reactor - a checkerboard array of MTR fuel elements and feed elements; the unloaded reactor will consist of fuel elements only."
