Feasibility of a Liquid Phase Chemonuclear Ozone Process (open access)

Feasibility of a Liquid Phase Chemonuclear Ozone Process

At the Chemonuclear Workshop held at Brookhaven National laboratory in November 1962 it was pointed out that the production of ozone from oxygen by a liquid phase fission fragment chemonuclear process appears to have reasonable economic potential. The maximum theoretical reaction yield for the formation of ozone from oxygen is a "G" value of 68 molecules for 100 ev based on heat of reaction data. The authors felt a "G" value of 15 to be reasonable for this study. the reactor system chosen has liquid oxygen as its moderator and the operating pressure and temperature were selected so as to allow boiling of the oxygen-ozone mixture. The total plant investment cost is estimated to be in the range of $100,000,000. Other system designs will be considered in the future.

A Bond-Cell Method for Complex Molecules and Metals (open access)

A Bond-Cell Method for Complex Molecules and Metals

This technical report introduces "some approximations into the basic quantum mechanical theory" so that the theory of the covalent bond and the molecular orbital method "can be combined into one which will yield quantitative rather than qualitative binding energies and cohesive energies and also distinct energy levels and band structure." This approach will provide a common method "suitable to both solid state physicists and physical chemists, for calculating the energy levels in metals and complex molecules." This report also contains figures detailing the findings. (Quotations taken from introduction)

Hazards Report for the SM-1 Core II Without Special Components (open access)

Hazards Report for the SM-1 Core II Without Special Components

Abstract: This technical report describes the changes incurred in the SM-1 by the insertion of the SM-1 Core II without special components. The SM-1 Core II components were made to specifications very nearly identical to those of SM-1 Core I. The differences consist of europium absorber sections, internal europium flux suppressors in the control rod fuel elements, and low impurity cladding. Each of the SM-1 Core II components with the exception of the five absorber sections new in SM-1 Core I were subjected to a Zero Power Experiment at the Alco Critical Facility. The results of this experiment indicate that the SM-1 Core II will have nuclear characteristics very similar to that of the SM-1 Core I. Since SM-1 Core II will be operated with the same mode of rod control, in the same core support structure, and with the same primary coolant flow conditions, the thermal characteristics should be essentially identical to that of SM-1 Core I. Also, all kinetic characteristics of SM-1 Core II should be identical to those of SM-1 Core I. This report demonstrates that there is no increase in potential for a hazardous situation at SM-1 due to the replacement of SM-1 Core I by …

The Application of Wax Laps to Vibratory Polishers

From introduction: "In this paper the adaptation of the wax lab surface vibratory polisher is described. The wax lap requires little maintenance during the life of the lap. It is not necessary to remove any of the holding devices on the bowl to clean and recondition the lap. The bowl is merely washed out, recharged and placed in operation. The wax lap will not wrinkle or tear, nor is it necessary to change it each day such as the silk or nylon cloths."

The Temperature Dependence of Birefringence in Irradiated Polyethylene

Technical report on a study where the birefringence of irradiated polyethylene was observed as a function of temperature. The data is consistent with a mechanism in which crosslinking limits the growth and annealing of crystallites. Crosslinks formed in material which was oriented at the time the crosslinks were formed, results in an oriented gel. This effect explains the birefringence and the persistence of nucleation sites at high temperatures.

A New Chlorophyll from Green Bacteria (open access)

A New Chlorophyll from Green Bacteria

The green photosynthetic bacteria are characterized by the presence of either chlorobium chlorophyll (bacterioviridin)-65o or chlorobium chlorophyll-66o (numerical designation based on the position of the red-absorption peak in ether) z. Most strains of Chlorobium contain chlorophyll-66o which has its major red peak between 74 ° and 75 ° m/~ in FiFo. KATZ AND WASSINK z first reported an additional minor absorption peak at 81o mF for Chlorobium limicola in vivo and a corresponding minor peak at 780 m F in ethanol extracts. LARSEN (Figs. 6-11 in ref. 3) also observed this 8Io-mF absorption band in another Chlorobium strain and a corresponding peak at 77 ° m/~ in acetone extracts. In strain L of C. thiosulfatophilum the minor red peak appears at 800 mF, clearly resolved from the main peak of chlorophyll-65o at about 725 m/~ (see refs. I, 4). We have observed the minor red peak once again in Chloropseudomonas ethylicum, strain 2K (refs. 5, 6), as a shoulder at about 81o mF on the side of the 75o-mF peak of chlorophyll-66o (ref. 7). The evidence presented in this paper indicates that the absorption peak appearing between 800 and 81o m/, in vivo does not belong to chlorophyll-65 o (or …
