Oral History Interview with Guy Longshore, March 19, 2021

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with William Guy Longshore. Longshore joined the U.S. Army Forces in 1941, before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as a B-29 .50 caliber machine gunner with the 73rd Bombardment Wing, 2nd Air Force. He was stationed in Saipan, Tinian and Guam. He participated in bombing missions and missions to drop supplies to prisoner-of-war camps throughout Japan. His crew was one of the 200 B-29s who flew over Tokyo Bay on the day the surrender was signed. They completed over 30 missions. His discharge date is not noted.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with William Morgenroth. Morgenroth joined the Marine Corps in April of 1944. He shares details of his training in Hawaii, learning weaponry and practicing beach landings. He served in demolition with the 5th Marine Division, 26th Marines. They participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He received his discharge in April of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Dwayne Jose, February 19, 2019

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Dwayne Kendall Jose. Jose joined the Army Air Forces in 1942. He received his wings in 1943, and served as a B-26 bomber pilot with the 17th Bomb Group, 12th Air Force. Beginning in mid-1944, he traveled to North Africa, and completed 50 missions over Italy and Germany. They participated in the Italian Campaign and the Battle of the Bulge, bombing air fields, refineries and bridges. He shares vivid details of combat. Jose returned to the U.S. and received his discharge in 1945.

Oral History Interview with Howard Stearns, June 19, 2018

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Howard Stearns. Stearns joined the Army in July of 1946. He served with the 1st Cavalry Division, 5th Cavalry Regiment. In December he traveled to Yokohama, Japan aboard the USS General W. M. Black (AP-135). Stearns was assigned to the 4th Replacement Depot in Japan, and worked as a non-commissioned officer, overseeing a supply room during the occupation of Japan. Stearns also transported war criminals by vehicle to the war crime trials, sat in on the trials, then escorted the criminals back to the Sugamo prison in Tokyo. He returned to the US and was discharged in November of 1947.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Daniel Montgomery. Montgomery joined the Army Air Forces in late 1942 and trained to be a radio operator. After training, he joined the 371st Fighter Group, 406th Fighter Squadron in Virginia. He travelled with the unit to England in February 1944. He also went to Normandy with them after the invasion. He shares several anecdotes and recalls experiences aboard P-47 aircraft. He was discharged in December, 1945.

Oral History Interview with Samuel Cole, February 19, 2018

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Samuel Cole. Cole joined the Army Air Forces in January of 1943. He completed schooling for navigation, and was commissioned in August of 1944. He was then sent to Florida for radar operator training. He flew in a B-29 with the 41st Bomb Squadron, 501st Bombardment Group, 315th Bomb Wing, 20th Air Force. In 1945 they flew 10 missions, bombing oil refineries in Japan. He returned to the US and was discharged in April of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Garland Picou, December 19, 2017

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Garland Picou. Picou was drafted into the United States Army in August of 1954. He was involved in the occupation of Germany and therefore was classified as a World War II veteran. He trained as a medic at Fort Hood, learning battlefield first aid. He was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, 8th Regiment, Headquarters Company, and they were sent to Frankfurt, Germany. He was assigned to work as a communications operator, sending and receiving information from Division Headquarters with teletype and printed messages. His wife joined him while he was in Germany and they traveled during the two years he was stationed there. He describes some of his military and travel experiences while stationed there. He was discharged in 1956.

Oral History Interview with Ernest Howe, September 19, 2017

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ernest Howe. Howe joined the Navy in 1943 when he finished high school. He trained as a pharmacist's mate and worked in the Oak Knoll Hospital in Oakland. He then was assigned to a large hospital in Noumea, New Caledonia. Later in the war, he moved up to the Philippines and worked in a clinic in Manila. When the war ended, Howe opted for a discharge.
