W-026, transuranic waste restricted waste management (TRU RWM) glovebox operational test report

The TRU Waste/Restricted Waste Management (LLW/PWNP) Glovebox 401 is designed to accept and process waste from the Transuranic Process Glovebox 302. Waste is transferred to the glovebox via the Drath and Schraeder Bagless Transfer Port (DO-07401) on a transfer stand. The stand is removed with a hoist and the operator inspects the waste (with the aid of the Sampling and Treatment Director) to determine a course of action for each item. The waste is separated into compliant and non compliant. One Trip Port DO-07402A is designated as ``Compliant``and One Trip Port DO-07402B is designated as ``Non Compliant``. As the processing (inspection, bar coding, sampling and treatment) of the transferred items takes place, residue is placed in the appropriate One Trip port. The status of the waste items is tracked by the Data Management System (DMS) via the Plant Control System (PCS) barcode interface. As an item is moved for sampling or storage or it`s state altered by treatment, the Operator will track an items location using a portable barcode reader and entry any required data on the DMS console. The Operational Test Procedure (OTP) will perform evolutions (described here) using the Plant Operating Procedures (POP) in order to verify that …

Application of advanced seismic reflection imaging techniques to mapping permeable zones at Dixie Valley, Nevada. Final technical report (open access)

Application of advanced seismic reflection imaging techniques to mapping permeable zones at Dixie Valley, Nevada. Final technical report

Multifold seismic reflection data from the Dixie Valley geothermal field in Nevada were reprocessed using a nonlinear optimization scheme called simulated annealing to model subsurface acoustic velocities, followed by a pre-stack Kirchhoff migration to produce accurate and detailed depth-migrated images of subsurface structure. In contrast to conventional processing techniques, these methods account for significant lateral variations in velocity and thus have the potential ability to image steeply-dipping faults and fractures that may affect permeability within geothermal fields. The optimization scheme develops two-dimensional velocity models to within 6% of velocities obtained from well and surface geologic data. Only the seismic data (i.e., first arrival times of P waves) are used to construct the velocity models and pre-stack migration images, and no other a priori assumptions are invoked. Velocities obtained by processing individual seismic tracks were integrated to develop a block diagram of velocities to 2.3 km depth within the Dixie Valley geothermal field. Details of the tectonic and stratigraphic structure allowed three dimensional extension of the interpretations of two dimensional data. Interpretations of the processed seismic data are compared with well data, surface mapping, and other geophysical data. The Dixie Valley fault along the southeastern Stillwater Range Piedmont is associated with …

The greenhouse of the future: Using a sponsored competition in a capstone course (open access)

The greenhouse of the future: Using a sponsored competition in a capstone course

Educational objectives of capstone courses such as critical-thinking and problem-solving skills are among the most cited needs in curriculum revitalization efforts. Sponsored competitions present an important vehicle for achieving these educational objectives. Opportunities such as the Greenhouse of the Future Competition provide students a diverse range of critical experiences not easily simulated in traditional classroom settings. The objective of the competition was to provide an opportunity for US university students to conceptualize, design, integrate, fabricate, and demonstrate innovative greenhouse or controlled environment ideas. The students achieved a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction by converting their ideas into proposals, developing proposals into experiments, tracking the data generated by the experiments and translating that data into a meaningful communication locally and to the scientific community at large. Most of these important learning experiences would have remained as components of the project even if the team had not advanced as the winning entry.

Development of fluorescence lifetime diagnostic. Project accomplishments summary (Attachment 1), Revision 1 (open access)

Development of fluorescence lifetime diagnostic. Project accomplishments summary (Attachment 1), Revision 1

Fiber-optic-based sensors are excellent candidates for detecting the presence and monitoring the levels of degradation products in stockpiled weapons. Specifically, fluorescence-based sensors are extremely sensitive, can have high specificity for compounds of interest, and are electrically inert. In addition to their applications in the enhanced surveillance program, fiber optic sensors are important for remote sensing, environmental remediation, and medical diagnostics. Optiphase Inc. has developed inexpensive technology for extremely precise measurement of phase shifts of interferometric optical and electrical signals. The company was interested in applying this capability in the rapidly expanding field of fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy, but lacked the expertise and resources associated with fluorescence chemistry and instrumentation. LLNL`s fiber-optic sensor group had significant expertise in these areas, but had previously concentrated its efforts on the chemistry, sensitivity, and selectivity of fluorescence amplitude-based sensors. Stability is a well known issue with this type of sensor whereas lifetime-based sensors exhibit excellent stability, a critical factor for the efficacy of sensors employed in the long-term monitoring of stockpiled weapons. Cooperation with the company afforded LLNL access to enabling, proprietary technology which could simplify and accelerate the transition to the next level of Enhanced Surveillance Program (ESP) sensor sophistication, namely fluorescence lifetime based …
