Method for keeping RBOF waste within EPA pH limits for nonhazardous waste
A system to control corrosion, while reducing the amount of hazardous waste generated, is proposed for the RBOF receiving basin. Details of the chemistry, experimental setup, and methods for monitoring pH are included in this report.

Radiological performance assessment for the Z-Area Saltstone Disposal Facility
This radiological performance assessment (RPA) for the Savannah River Site (SRS) Saltstone Disposal Facility (SDF) was prepared in accordance with the requirements of Chapter III of the US Department of Energy Order 5820.2A. The Order specifies that an RPA should provide reasonable assurance that a low-level waste (LLW) disposal facility will comply with the performance objectives of the Order. The performance objectives require that: (1) exposures of the general public to radioactivity in the waste or released from the waste will not result in an effective dose equivalent of 25 mrem per year; (2) releases to the atmosphere will meet the requirements of 40 CFR 61; (3) inadvertent intruders will not be committed to an excess of an effective dose equivalent of 100 mrem per year from chronic exposure, or 500 mrem from a single acute exposure; and (4) groundwater resources will be protected in accordance with Federal, State and local requirements.

This report consists of the testimony by J. William Currie, Manager, Energy Systems Modernization Office, Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratories before The Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, Washington, DC on February 18, 1992. He states ``It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to talk with this distinguished committee about energy conservation technologies and policies, especially as they relate to federal energy use and the commercialization of energy-efficiency technologies. Clearly, using energy more efficiently offers the potential for tremendous cost savings and environmental benefits in the United States and throughout the rest of the world. The challenge, especially with regard to the federal sector, is to lay the foundation for ensuring that the citizens of our nation realize the maximum savings and environmental benefit over the long run. This is the primary focus of my comments today.``

Heat exchanger restart evaluation. Revision 1
On December 24, 1991, the K-Reactor was in the shutdown mode with full AC process water flow and full cooling water flow. Safety rod testing was being performed as part of the power ascension testing program. The results of cooling water samples indicated tritium concentrations higher than allowable. Further sampling and testing confirmed a Process Water System to Cooling Water System leak in heat exchanger 4A (HX 4A). The heat exchanger was isolated and the plant shutdown. Heat exchanger 4A was removed from the plant and moved to C-Area prior to performing examinations and diagnostic testing. This included locating and identifying the leaking tube or tubes, eddy current examination of the leaking tube and a number of adjacent tubes, visually inspecting the leaking tube from both the inside as well as the area surrounding the identified tube. The leaking tube was removed and examined metallurgically to determine the failure mechanism. In addition ten other tubes that either exhibited eddy current indications or would represent a baseline condition were removed from heat exchanger 4A for metallurgical examination. Additional analysis and review of heat exchanger leakage history was performed to determine if there are any patterns which can be used for predictive …

The flux and recycling of bioactive substances in the surface sediments of the deep basins off southern California. Final report
We have used pore water gradients and in situ benthic flux chamber measurements to assess the total and down-core variations in the organic carbon remineralization rate. To augment standard pore water extractions, we developed techniques to extract pore water samples at 2mm sampling intervals, greatly improving our assessment of near- surface vertical gradients. In addition, much emphasis was placed on directly measuring the exchange of chemicals between the bottom waters and sediment pore waters via in situ benthic flux chamber incubations. The latter were performed with the MANOP bottom lander, and in later expeditions, the Benthic Experimental chamber Instrument (BECI). Results from these measurements were used to assess the several aspects of seafloor organic matter diagenesis.
