Effect of Temperature on Viscosity of Slurries of Boron and Magnesium in JP-5 Fuel

Memorandum presenting the viscosities of slurries containing 50 to 65 percent by weight of boron in JP-5 fuel at temperatures from 30 to 80 degrees Celsius and of slurries containing 50 percent by weight of magnesium in JP-5 fuel from -40 to 80 degrees Celsius. Plastic viscosities of the boron slurries decreased consistently with an increase in temperature. Results regarding boron slurries and magnesium slurries are provided.

Effectiveness of a turbojet tubular combustor in screening the turbine from foreign objects

Report presenting the effectiveness of a tubular combustor in screening the turbine from foreign objects measured with air flow corresponding to that at static sea-level rated operation. On average, the effectiveness of the production combustor was only 36 percent for the foreign objects introduced in the tests; that is, 64 percent of the objects penetrated the combustor. Results for six different configurations are provided.

Flood Erosion Highway Bridge

Photograph of stream bank cutting. Temporary stream bank erosion control measure. Bridge is located in a bend in the river and each time the water rises some more bank is eaten away near the end of the bridge. These trees are held in place by a cable and keep the water away from the raw bnk of the river. The section of bank from the man in photograph to the present location of bank was eroded away in one year.

Free-flight heat-transfer measurements on two 20 degree-cone-cylinders at Mach numbers from 1.3 to 4.9

Report presenting heat-transfer data obtained in free flight at supersonic Mach numbers up to 4.90 and local Reynolds numbers per foot up to 27.7 million. Two 20 degree-included-angle cone-cylinder models were launched from a carrier airplane at 36,000 feet of altitude. Results regarding primary data and heat-transfer results are provided.

Report presenting an investigation at high subsonic speeds of various arrangements of underwing external stores on a model of the Douglas D-558-II research airplane. Three sizes of a short-cylinder shape and two sizes of a long-cylinder shape were investigated with three thicknesses of pylon support on one store configuration. Results regarding drag characteristics and lift and pitch characteristics are provided.
