Wood Pulp Digetster Wall Corrosion Investigation (open access)

Wood Pulp Digetster Wall Corrosion Investigation

The modeling of the flow in a wood pulp digester is but one component of the investigation of the corrosion of digesters. This report describes the development of a Near-Wall-Model (NWM) that is intended to couple with a CFD model that determines the flow, heat, and chemical species transport and reaction within the bulk flow of a digester. Lubrication theory approximations were chosen from which to develop a model that could determine the flow conditions within a thin layer near the vessel wall using information from the interior conditions provided by a CFD calculation of the complete digester. The other conditions will be determined by coupled solutions of the wood chip, heat, and chemical species transport and chemical reactions. The NWM was to couple with a digester performance code in an iterative fashion to provide more detailed information about the conditions within the NW region. Process Simulations, Ltd (PSL) is developing the digester performance code. This more detailed (and perhaps more accurate) information from the NWM was to provide an estimate of the conditions that could aggravate the corrosion at the wall. It is intended that this combined tool (NWM-PSL) could be used to understand conditions at/near the wall in …

Management of Global Nuclear Materials for International Security (open access)

Management of Global Nuclear Materials for International Security

Nuclear materials were first used to end the World War II. They were produced and maintained during the cold war for global security reasons. In the succeeding 50 years since the Atoms for Peace Initiative, nuclear materials were produced and used in global civilian reactors and fuel cycles intended for peaceful purposes. The Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) of 1970 established a framework for appropriate applications of both defense and civilian nuclear activities by nuclear weapons states and non-nuclear weapons states. As global inventories of nuclear materials continue to grow, in a diverse and dynamically changing manner, it is time to evaluate current and future trends and needed actions: what are the current circumstances, what has been done to date, what has worked and what hasn't? The aim is to identify mutually reinforcing programmatic directions, leading to global partnerships that measurably enhance international security. Essential elements are material protection, control and accountability (MPC&A) of separated nuclear materials, interim storage, and geologic repositories for all nuclear materials destined for final disposal. Cooperation among key partners, such as the MPC&A program between the U.S. and Russia for nuclear materials from dismantled weapons, is necessary for interim storage and final disposal of nuclear materials. Such …

Electric-Field Enhancement by Nodular Defects in Multilayer Coatings Irradiated at Normal and 45 (degree) Incidence (open access)

Electric-Field Enhancement by Nodular Defects in Multilayer Coatings Irradiated at Normal and 45 (degree) Incidence

The standing-wave electric-field profile within multilayer coatings is significantly perturbated by a nodular defect. The intensity, which is proportional to the electric field squared, is increased in the high index material by {>=}3x at normal incidence and {>=}12x at 45 degrees incidence angle. Therefore it is not surprising that nodular defects are initiation sites of laser-induced damage. In this study, the impact of reflectance-band centering and incident angle are explored for a 1 {micro}m diameter nodular defect seed overcoated with a 24 layer high-reflector constructed of quarter-wave thick alternating layers of hafnia and silica. The modeling was performed using a three-dimensional finite-element analysis code.

Low-Cost Protective Layer Coatings on Thermal Barrier Coatings via CCVD. Final Report (open access)

Low-Cost Protective Layer Coatings on Thermal Barrier Coatings via CCVD. Final Report

MicroCoating Technologies, Inc., investigated the use of the Combustion Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD) process to deposit oxygen or sintering barrier coatings for thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications. In addition, it looked at the use of its nanopowders by the NanoSpray process for developing smoothing layers on TBCs. Testing and analysis of coated substrates included heat treatments, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and profilometry. Coatings on TBC-coated superalloy coupons were tested by an outside collaborator. Results from the investigations indicated that the thin film coatings were not well-suited as barrier layers on the rough bond coat or TBC. Subsequent investigations considered smoothing layers on the TBC, as suggested by the collaborator, using nanopowder-based coatings. Smoothing of substrate surfaces by 50% was observed by profilometry.

Supersymmetric color superconductivity (open access)

Supersymmetric color superconductivity

Recent interest in novel phases in high density QCD motivates the study of high density supersymmetric QCD (SQCD), where powerful exact results for supersymmetric gauge theories can be brought to bear in the strongly coupled regime. We begin by describing how a chemical potential can be incorporated into a supersymmetric theory as a spurion vector superfield. We then study supersymmetric SU(N{sub c}) gauge theories with N{sub f} flavors of quarks in the presence of a baryon chemical potential {mu}, and describe the global symmetry breaking patterns at low energy. Our analysis requires {mu} < {Lambda} and is thus complementary to the variational approach that has been successful for {mu} >> {Lambda}. We find that for N{sub F} < N{sub c} a modified U(1){sub B} symmetry is preserved, analogous to the non-supersymmetric 2SC phase, whereas for N{sub f} = N{sub c} there is a critical chemical potential above which the U(1){sub B} is broken, as it is in the non-supersymmetric CFL phase. We further analyze the cases with N{sub c} + 1 {le} N{sub f} < 3/2 N{sub c} and find that baryon number is broken dynamically for {mu} > {mu}{sub c}. We also give a qualitative description of the phases …

Parallel strong-strong/strong-weak simulations of beam-beam interaction in hadron accelerators (open access)

Parallel strong-strong/strong-weak simulations of beam-beam interaction in hadron accelerators

In this paper, we present a parallel computational tool, BeamBeam3D, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, for strong-strong/strong-weak beam-beam modeling. This tool calculates self-consistently the electromagnetic beam-beam forces for arbitrary distributions during each collision when a strong-strong beam-beam interaction model is used. When a strong-weak model is used, the code has the option of using a Gaussian approximation for the strong beam. BeamBeam3D uses a multiple-slice model, so finite bunch length effects can be studied. The code also includes a Lorentz boost and rotation to treat collisions with finite collision crossing angle. It handles arbitrary closed-orbit separation (static or time dependent) and models long-range beam-beam interactions using a newly developed shifted Green function approach. It can also handle multiple interaction points using externally supplied linear maps between interaction points in the strong-weak model. The code has been used to study beam-beam effects in the RHIC, Tevatron, and LHC. In this paper we will describe the BeamBeam3D code, present example simulations, and describe the code performance.
