This design consists in a "hollow hub or sleeve in combination with the universal joint composed of a band fitting loosely within said sleeve, a gimbal-ring pivoted to said band, and a knuckle pivoted to said gimbal-ring, whereby motion may be transmitted from one rotary body to another when the planes of rotation are or are not parallel to each other" (lines 88-95).

This design consists in "[t]he combination, with the driving-wheel . . . the rotary mold-board, and the plow-beam, of the universal joint composed of the hollow portion of the hub of the driving-wheel, a ring pivoted thereto, a knuckle pivoted to said ring, and a band encircling the hollow portion of said hub and fixed to the said plow-beam" (lines 6-13).
