Degradation Products of Tributyl Phosphate (open access)

Degradation Products of Tributyl Phosphate

Abstract: "A method for determination of dibutyl phosphate in solvent streams containing tributyl phosphate is outlined. The method is based on analysis for total uranium of total phosphate after removal of uranium and phosphate in excess of that present as uranyl dibutyl phosphate. Results on plant solvent samples are presented. Difficulties with precipitation of [...] dibutyl phosphate, when fresh solvents were employed, are discussed. Small amounts of nonphosphate uranium-complexing agents were found in plant solvents. Diluent degradation is postulated as the source of these components. Emulsion-formation tendencies appeared to correlate better with concentrations of these contaminants than with dibutyl phosphate content."

Analysis of the Interaction of 300-Mev Neutrons with Xenon (open access)

Analysis of the Interaction of 300-Mev Neutrons with Xenon

Abstract: And investigation of the interactions between 300-Mev neutrons and xenon was made by means of a cloud chamber in a pulsed magnetic field of 21,700 gauss placed in the neutron beam of the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron. Eighty-seven negative pion events and 257 other stars were analyzed. In addition an experimental check was made on the energy of the incoming neutrons. Classification, identification, and angular and energy distributions of prongs associated with all events are presented. Interpretations of results are given.

Investigation of Explosive Characteristics of Purex Solvent Decomposition Products (Red Oil) (open access)

Investigation of Explosive Characteristics of Purex Solvent Decomposition Products (Red Oil)

Abstract: "Laboratory production of an explosion between UNH and "red oil" under calcination conditions has been accomplished. Attempted production of a vapor phase explosion was unsuccessful below 150-160 C. Since such severe conditions are necessary to obtain an explosive reaction, it appears that present Purex plant design is adequate to avoid explosive conditions."

Resonance Absorption in Lumps and Mixtures (open access)

Resonance Absorption in Lumps and Mixtures

The resonance absorption of a lump is described in terms of three components. Calculations of resonance absorption are carried out using the model for the resonance spectrum of uranium recently derived; calculations are also made with variations of this model which involve local fluctuations in level strengths. For metal and oxide lumps the agreement with observation is satisfactory. For dilute mixtures, whose resonance activation was measured by Mitchell, computed values fall 20% to 30% above measured ones.

Warping Instability in Long Rods (open access)

Warping Instability in Long Rods

Abstract. If a pile rod gets bowed within its cooling tube it becomes warmer on the side which approaches the tube wall, and thermal expansion tends to warp it in the same direction as the original displacement. This was discussed roughly in N-601, and it was there concluded that the mechanism was not important for an isolated short slug. In connection with current development of continuous jacket (cartridge) assemblies, it seems desirable to look at this question again. In this case it is possible that the effect may be of some concern.

Separation of Iron and Tuballoy With Phthallic Acid (open access)

Separation of Iron and Tuballoy With Phthallic Acid

Introduction: This report embodies the results of an investigation as to the possibility of removing the bulk of the iron from gunk solutions of various concentrations by precipitation of the iron with phthallic acid and subsequent precipitation of tuballoy. The method consists of dissolving the phthallic acid in the gunk solution and then adding NH₃ to a suitable pH, precipitating the iron, and leaving the tuballoy in solution.

Recovery of Uranium From Contaminated Precipitron Oil (open access)

Recovery of Uranium From Contaminated Precipitron Oil

Abstract: The distillation and residue extraction recovery procedures developed for the recovery of uranium from Kinney and diffusion pump oil, were applied to contaminated precipitron oil. The effectiveness and advisability of using the method, in whole or in part, is discussed, and various recommendations for processing this particular type of oil are presented. Additional contaminating substances present in this type of oil added to the complexity of the problem but a satisfactory recovery procedure was, nevertheless, successfully developed.

Status and Future Program of Homogeneous Reactor Fuel Processing Studies (open access)

Status and Future Program of Homogeneous Reactor Fuel Processing Studies

The behavior of insoluble corrosion products in the HRT is generally understood and studies of the removal of these solids by hydroclones can logically be terminated after the effect of higher processing rates by the multiple hydroclone has been determined. Chemical descaling may be required to supplement solids removal by hydroclones. Laboratory studies to find suitable reagents will be continued in conjunction with decontamination work presently in progress.

The Creep of Zircaloy-2 Process Tubes (open access)

The Creep of Zircaloy-2 Process Tubes

The creep problems associated with zircaloy-2 process tubes and the factors affecting the creep of these tubes were discussed in detail. Emphasis was placed on the determination of the tube wall thickness for an SPR tube, whose minimum thickness is limited by creep considerations. It was concluded that, at the present time, there is not enough information available to design zircaloy-2 process tubes on a realistic basis. Various experiments were suggested to supplement the creep rate testing program being pursued by Battelle Memorial Institute.
