ZPPR progress report: August 1987-October 1987

This progress report details activities during the time period of August through October, 1987. Results are presented from the axially heterogeneous assembly ZPPR-17, a part of the Jupiter-III program. The loading of the ZPPR-17B assembly, with 25 control rod positions, is described along with operational measurements, calculation models, measurements and predictions of criticality and measured axial worth profiles for B[sub 4]C. From ZPPR-17A, calculated and measured results are given for banks of control rod positions along with revised measured values for various single, central control rods.

NNWSI [Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigation] strategy for repository licensing (open access)

NNWSI [Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigation] strategy for repository licensing

The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigation (NNWSI) has developed a strategy to license a nuclear waste repository in tuff. This strategy, which is currently circulating in draft form within the Department of Energy`s Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, has important implications for DWPF waste form qualification activities, design of the DWPF process, and DWPF operations. In this report, the strategy and its implications for the DWPF are presented. 2 refs.

Electromagnetic experiment to map in situ water in heated welded tuff: Preliminary results (open access)

Electromagnetic experiment to map in situ water in heated welded tuff: Preliminary results

An experiment was conducted in Tunnel Complex G at the Nevada Test Site to evaluate geotomography as a possible candidate for in situ monitoring of hydrology in the near field of a heater placed in densely welded tuff. Alterant tomographs of 200 MHz electromagnetic permittivity were made for a vertical and a horizontal plane. After the 1 kilowatt heater was turned on, the tomographs indicated a rapid and strong drying adjacent to the heater. Moisture loss was not symmetric about the heater, but seemed to be strongly influenced by heterogeneity in the rock mass. The linear character of many tomographic features and their spatial correlation with fractures mapped in boreholes are evidence that drying was most rapid along some fractures. When the heater was turned off, an increase in moisture content occurred around the heater and along the dry fractures. However, this process is much slower and the magnitude of the moisture increase much smaller than the changes observed during heating of the rock. The interpretation of the tomographs is preliminary until they can be processed without the restrictive assumption of straight ray paths for the signals through the highly heterogeneous rock mass. 15 refs., 4 figs.

Continental Scientific Drilling (CSD): Technology Barriers to Deep Drilling Studies in Thermal Regimes (open access)

Continental Scientific Drilling (CSD): Technology Barriers to Deep Drilling Studies in Thermal Regimes

This report is the proceedings of a workshop. The primary thrust of these discussion was to identify the major key technology barriers to the Department of Energy (DOE) supported Thermal Regimes CSD projects and to set priorities for research and development. The major technological challenge is the high temperature to be encountered at depth. Specific problems derived from this issue were widely recognized among the participants and are reflected in this summary. A major concern for the projected Thermal Regimes CSD boreholes was the technology required for continuous coring, in contrast to that required for drilling without core or spot coring. Current commercial technology bases for these two techniques are quite different. The DOE has successfully fielded projects that used both technologies, i.e, shallow continuous coring (Inyo Domes and Valles Caldera) and deeper drilling with spot cores (Imperial Valley-SSSDP). It was concluded that future scientific objectives may still require both approaches, but continuous coring is the most likely requirement in the near term. (DJE-2005)

CC Cryostat Cooldown Test Results (open access)

CC Cryostat Cooldown Test Results

A cooldown of the inner vessel of the Central Calorimeter cryostat to 77K was performed during the week of October 12 in order to 'cold shock' it, i.e., to check for insulating vacuum integrity with the inner vessel cold. The conclusion from our test results is that the vessel withstood the cold shock, and the insulating vacuum remained good. Cooldown was analyzed by J.D. Fuerst in D0 note 3740.000-EN-107, dated August 19. Warmup was analyzed by T. Peterson and B.Fitzpatrick in D0 Engineering Note 3740.214-EN-110, dated September 29. Both cooldown and warmup times were in accordance with predictions. An initial pumpdown of the insulating vacuum space was done with the vessel warm on October 9. The results of that pumpdown are shown in Figure 1 superimposed on a predicted pumpdown curve generated by Brian Fitzpatrick before the test began. After 24 hours the insulating vacuum was 7 microns. After 48 and 72 hours it was 2-3 microns. At this point (October 12) valving the pumps off resulted in a rise of 6 microns in 3 hours and 20 minutes, or 1.8 microns per hour. Before beginning cooldown, the pumps were valved off and the insulating vacuum was 15 microns. Cooldown …
