Capsule irradiation of uranium with low alloy additions (open access)

Capsule irradiation of uranium with low alloy additions

Here is a more complete description of the capsule test we discussed in our initial contact in December. I have included as much detailed description of the test as has been decided on to date. Also, there are some factors which, from previous similar test, I have found to be pertinent to the successful charging and irradiation performance of the capsules. There is one critical point that needs to be settled as soon as possible. In order to finish machining the outer diameter of the capsules, the expected approximate specific power generation and enrichment in the surrounding process tubes must be known. In addition, there are several other factors which effect the location of the test in the reactors which Bob Marshall and I would like to go over with one of hour engineers as soon as possible.

105-F intermediate range test hole parameters (open access)

105-F intermediate range test hole parameters

This report discusses 105 intermediate range test hole which was bored in 105-F to demonstrate reactor hole boring techniques. This test hole was then utilized to determine the performance of neutron sensitive gamma compensated ion chambers (CIC), the effectiveness of epoxy reactor shield plug designs, the compatability of the prototype.components intermediate range instrumentation, and demonstrate the performance of an intermediate range monitor system on a typical Hanford reactor application. In the process of determining the above information physical, nuclear, gamma, and temperature data was recorded as related to the 105-F intermediate range monitor test hole and is provided in this report.

Production Test IP-684-A, hot-die-sized parameters evaluation (open access)

Production Test IP-684-A, hot-die-sized parameters evaluation

The hot-die-sized concept has been under investigation as an alternate manufacturing process for several years. Irradiation testing of the elements began in mid 1963. Some dimensional behavior problems were encountered with the fuel and a test is now being irradiated which may provide sufficient data to remedy the situation. Pre-irradiation examination of fuel elements has shown a significant dimensional change of the cores during the fabrication process, and this dimensional change is thought to contribute to the irradiation behavior of the elements. The irradiation effects of fabrication parameters that influence the dimensional. The objective of the test detailed in this is to evaluate the effects of end bonding pressure and machined core size on the irradiation characteristics of hot-die-sized diffusion bonded fuel elements.

Design criteria linear power rate-of-rise instrumentation (open access)

Design criteria linear power rate-of-rise instrumentation

Studies of reactor safety considerations have demonstrated the need for automatic safety circuit action based on the measured rate of power increase in the power level range from 10{sup {minus}2} to 10 {sup 0} times equilibrium power level. Budget and Preliminary Engineering Studies were performed. This document provides the design criteria for detailed design of the proposed Linear Power Rate-Of-Rise Instrumentation facilities and is applicable to any of the eight IPD reactors.

The Determination of Trace Residues on Metal Surfaces (open access)

The Determination of Trace Residues on Metal Surfaces

Analytical methods have been developed to characterize or identify residues removed from metal surfaces. The results are quantitative for several compounds; such as, certain hydrocarbons, inorganic chlorides, water, and amine hydrochlorides. Solvents are used directly as surface rinsing agents or to rinse cold traps used on high vacuum cleaning systems. A method of determining water in halogenated solvents in the near infrared region is also reported. A unique method of drying the reference solvent using a water-solvent equilibrium is described.

An Improved Thermobalance Reactor for the Study of Reduction and Hydrofluorination of Uranium Feed Materials (open access)

An Improved Thermobalance Reactor for the Study of Reduction and Hydrofluorination of Uranium Feed Materials

Two thermobalances have been constructed which make use of an improved reactor design for the study of gas-solid reactions as they apply to the conversion of uranium oxide materiels to uranium tetrafluoride. Since temperature has been recognized as one of the most important rate-governing factors for both of the reactions involved in this transformation, the reactor design provides for maintaining the sample temperature constant to +- 1.0 deg C. at any selected temperature over the range 100 to 600 deg C. Rate-controlling variables such as reaction temperatures, gas flow rates, preheating time and bed depth have been studied in order to establish the ranges over which small variations in these factors can be ignored. 630A MARITIME NUCLEAR STEAM GENERATOR. Progress Report No. 7 (open access)

630A MARITIME NUCLEAR STEAM GENERATOR. Progress Report No. 7

This progress report covers the period from November 15, 1963 to February 15, 1964. A study indicated that the most desirable type of blower drive turbine is one using main turbine throttie steam conditions and exhausting to the main turbine cross-over line. Preliminary planning for the initiation of a dynamic structural analyses of the overall steam generator was completed. External pressure loading and thermal stress calculations show that the calandria has a suitable design margin. A revised fuel latch operable from the rear face of the core was designed. A study was initiated to determine the feasibility of substituting Zircaloy for the stainless steel tubing within the active core. Preliminary sizing of control rod extensions and gang plates was completed. Initial loading of the second configuration of the 630A critical experiment reactor was completed. Detailed power distributions were measured in the 11 typical positions. Subcritical and critical rod worth curves were obtained in the critical experiment with up to 132 shim rods in the core. Moderator temperature coefficient measurements were made and agreed well with analytical data. Critical experiment correlation of fine radial power calculations in the revised mock-up showed good agreement. Performance specifications were prepared for a 1-Mw(e) power …
